Heartbreak and hope exist together in this remarkable graphic novel about growing up in a refugee camp, as told by a Somali refugee to the Newbery Honor-winning creator of Roller Girl.
Omar and his little brother, Hassan, arrived in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya, seven years ago. Their father was killed the day they left home, and they haven’t seen their mother since they joined their neighbors who were fleeing to Dadaab. Now Omar is eleven and Hassan is nine, and Omar has quit school to look after his brother, who has an intellectual disability.
When Omar is given the opportunity to return to school and carve out a future for himself and Hassan, he feels torn. He loves school and could have the opportunity to earn a coveted scholarship to a North American university—and with it a visa for himself and Hassan. But is it worth the risk and heartache of leaving his vulnerable brother for hours each day?
Told in Victoria Jamieson’s engaging and accessible graphic-novel style and based on Omar Mohamed’s gripping true story, this book is an intimate, important look at day-to-day life in a refugee camp.
ABOUT THE BOOK: My Hero Doesn't Wear a Cape captures the pride and

Many children do not know that African indentured servants, as well
as free blacks and slaves, all assisted in the founding of our
nation. There were between 5,000 to 20,000 patriots of African and
Native American descent who served in the Continental Forces under
the command of General George Washington. The stunning new picture
book Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War: Part 1
is historical fiction, told by the family historian to his
great-grandson about their family's military and patriotic service
as African-Americans during the Revolutionary War. The two are
direct descendants of two patriots. One was a free black man,
Sergeant Isaac Brown, who served in the 7th, 11th and 15th Virginia
Regiments of the Continental Line. Readers ages eight and older
will be fascinated as they learn about our country's forgotten
patriots. Marion T. Lane is a retired public school educator.
Originally from Philadelphia, she now resides in Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. Her next book is titled More Than One Ancestry. "I am
one of the few African-American members of the National Society of
the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of
Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge." Publisher's
