The Werewolf (Paperback): Montague Summers The Werewolf (Paperback)
Montague Summers
R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2012 Reprint of 1933 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Unsurpassed in its sheer scope and depth, the first definitive work on were-wolfs, employs a theological and philosophical approach, incorporating an extensive range of historical documentation and folklore. Summers examines the supernatural practice of shape-shifting, notes the finer distinctions between werewolfery and lycanthropy, and explores the differences of opinion on exactly how ordinary humans are transformed into creatures. Augustus Montague Summers was an English author and clergyman. He is known primarily for his scholarly work on the English drama of the 17th century, as well as for his idiosyncratic studies on witches, vampires, and werewolves, in all of which he professed to believe. He was responsible for the first English translation, published in 1928, of the notorious 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the Malleus Maleficarum

The History of Magic; Including a Clear and Precise Exposition of Its Procedure, Its Rites and Its Mysteries (Paperback):... The History of Magic; Including a Clear and Precise Exposition of Its Procedure, Its Rites and Its Mysteries (Paperback)
Eliphas Levi; Translated by Arthur Edward Waite
R566 Discovery Miles 5 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2012 Reprint of 1955 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Eliphas Levi, born Alphonse Louis Constant, was a French occult author and ceremonial magician. Levi's version of magic became a great success, especially after his death. That Spiritualism was popular on both sides of the Atlantic from the 1850s contributed to this success. His magical teachings were free from obvious fanaticisms; he had nothing to sell, and did not pretend to be the initiate of some ancient or fictitious secret society. He incorporated the Tarot cards into his magical system, and as a result the Tarot has been an important part of the paraphernalia of Western magicians. He had a deep impact on the magic of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later on the ex-Golden Dawn member Aleister Crowley. He was also the first to declare that a pentagram or five-pointed star with one point down and two points up represents evil, while a pentagram with one point up and two points down represents good. It was largely through the occultists inspired by him that Levi is remembered as one of the key founders of the 20th century revival of magic.

Natural and Supernatural - A History of the Paranormal from Earliest Times to 1914 (Paperback): Brian Inglis Natural and Supernatural - A History of the Paranormal from Earliest Times to 1914 (Paperback)
Brian Inglis
R735 Discovery Miles 7 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Did Moses turn rods into serpents? Does Uri Geller bend spoons? Did Socrates and Joan of Arc have spirit guides? Did Daniel Home levitate? The 1970's provided a striking revival of interest in the paranormal which has continued unabated into the twenty first century. Telepathy ESP, clairvoyance, premonitions, and psychokinesis - the action of mind upon matter - it was not long ago that orthodox opinion, both scientific and religious, rejected the possibility of such things out of hand. Today, their reality has been demonstrated and tested in laboratories all over the world and the results are published in serious scientific journals. Natural and Supernatural is the first full survey of the subject for over a century. With scrupulous thoroughness and a wealth of extraordinary detail, Brian Inglis presents his evidence, drawing on anthropological studies of primitive tribes and records of classical antiquity and taking his story to the outbreak of the First World War, when the first phase of scientific psychical research came to an end. He pays particular attention to the work of the mesmerists and of the early psychical researchers in the last century. He deals, too, with related aspects such as hauntings, poltergeist outbreaks:, scrying and dowsing. Contrary to popular belief, the evidence for psychic phenomena and non-locality, and the mass of material available to researchers is huge. Inglis meticulously sifted the genuine from the false., singling out such episodes as may reasonably be identified as historical and allowing the reader to make up his own mind, on the basis of the fullest and soundest knowledge, whether to accept paranormal phenomena or not. If they are accepted - and informed opinion is more and more moving that way- then a real revolution in our way of thinking is due to follow. For if mind can communicate with mind at distance, or move objects without contact, not merely will there have to be extensive revision of science textbooks. History, too, will need to be re-written, to allow for the possibility that reports which have long been dismissed as myth or illusion may have been accurate after all. The implications of the subject are great, and Inglis does them full justice. Praise for Natural and Supernatural. 'I believe it to be an extraordinarily important and valuable work, sensational in what it contains and even more so in its implications...he has piled up a mountain of evidence, searchingly examined and scrupulously evaluated.' Bernard Levin, The Times 'It has the two basic qualities which make books on history endure: it is both scholarly and readable.' Arthur Koestler, the Guardian 'A tour de force...one of those works, like H. G. Wells Outline of History, that fires the imagination and leaves the reader feeling stunned, but excited.' Colin Wilson, Evening News 'Brian Inglis is eminently sensible and sane. In this massive survey, the evidence is presented in a sober and scholarly way...Natural and Supernatural is hard to fault.' the Economist Inglis bring to this book the same thoroughness and care that he shows in his other books...while I have not been converted, it has intensified mental conflict, and I admire and respect him for writing it.' Karl Sabbagh, New Scientist 'Cool, authoritative and highly readable - a service to science and society.' Ray Brown, Psychology Today

True Haunting (Paperback): Edwin F. Becker True Haunting (Paperback)
Edwin F. Becker
R492 Discovery Miles 4 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the story of a true haunting. It was the first ever filmed and televised by NBC in 1971. A young couple purchases a building that was built and occupied by a single family that refused to relinquish their hold, even after death. Investigated and verified by experts, this residence brought chaos to the lives of those who chose to reside there. Unlike a horror novel, this chronicles what a real ghostly experience would resemble. Long before the laws of disclosure, a young couple winds up in the midst of strange occurrences prior to the term 'paranormal' becoming a common description. Searching for help at time when supernatural events were a taboo subject and being ignored by the Church, sent them into a desperate search for any assistance. Only a little known organization came to their aid. Author Tom Valentine, brought in a nationally known psychic, Joseph DeLouise, who then asked assistance of an exorcist from England, Reverend William Derl-Davis. Together, they gave their best effort at exorcising the multiple spirits inhabiting the building and disrupting the lives of the living. Events were filmed by NBC, who sent their most prominent Chicago journalist, Carole Simpson, to cover the event. Follow a young couple with a newborn as they attempt to cope with inexplicable events, experience denial, plead for help from their Church, and step into the world of the paranormal. Understand why ghosts cannot be exorcised and a true example of their strong sense of domain, even after death. Learn what experts and gifted people did in a failed attempt to assist this desperate couple. There is no happy ending, as the young couple suffers emotionally, are physically threatened, have their pets terrorized, and eventually suffer financially by actually "giving" their building away. What was intended as a financial answer to their prayers became, instead, a curse to be abolished. Learn many of the various manifestations that can be common in haunting. Ghosts can be seen and heard. They can propel objects and interrupt utilities. They can affect your moods and feed off of your emotions. They can appear as solid as you and me. They can react and become hostile if threatened or violated. Most important, as this young couple learned, they can harm you and cannot be removed. This is a firsthand accounting of what a true haunting is like. There are certain subtle occurrences you may find the most frightening, because you just might relate and recognize them. If so, guess what? You may have a ghost

The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage (Paperback): Abraham Ben Simeon, S. L. MacGregor Mathers The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage (Paperback)
Abraham Ben Simeon, S. L. MacGregor Mathers
R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2011 Reprint of 1898 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This remarkable grimoire was translated by S.L.M. Mathers from a 15th century French mauscript. This text has had a huge influence on modern ceremonial magic, and has been cited as a primary influence on Aleister Crowley. Abraham of Wurzburg, a cabalist and scholar of magic, describes a quest for the secret teachings which culminated in Egypt, where he encountered the magician Abramelin, who taught him his system in detail. The procedure involves many months of purification, followed by the invocation of good and evil spirits to accomplish some very worldly goals, including acquisition of treasure and love, travel through the air and under water, and raising armies out of thin air. It also tells of raising the dead, transforming ones appearance, becoming invisible, and starting storms. The key to this is a set of remarkable magic squares, sigils consisting of mystical words which in most cases can be read in several directions. Of course, these diagrams are said to have no potency unless used in the appropriate ritual context by an initiate. Mathers analyzed these words in an extensive set of notes and gives possible derivations from Hebrew, Greek and other languages.

Dog Is God Spelled Backwards (Paperback): Marcella Bickerstaff Dog Is God Spelled Backwards (Paperback)
Marcella Bickerstaff
R508 Discovery Miles 5 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

God is always speaking to us, but most of the time we just aren't listening. We either don't discern His voice or we just ignore Him when He does speak. Far too often, He has to use various ways of getting our attention. In my situation, He chose to use what I cherished the most--my dogs--to make me aware of His Love and Goodness. God speaks in the most unusual, extraordinary, and sometimes funny ways. He speaks the loudest during our times of pain and suffering when we need Him the most.Too often, I experienced pain and unnecessary loss because I ignored Him when He spoke. It was during a traumatic event that it finally dawned on me how long He had been trying to get me to tune my antenna to His frequency, which resonated on the wavelength of my heart. There is no static on His frequency, there only was on mine. I finally figured out that by clearing up the static on my channel, I would always receive clear signals from His transmitter and ride upon His wavelength. By obeying and following His instructions, I can experience more joy, instead of pain or loss. The second lesson I learned was to never give up on praying. Praying is the direct channel into God's throne room of grace and mercy, from which He transmits the signals of love that broadcast answered prayers and instructions. It has been through my journey with dogs that He transmitted the most, because they were the bandwidth on my radio receiver that I operated on. He created them, so He can use them in whatever capacity He chooses. They were just one way He chose to show me how much He really loves me. I just needed to listen and then obey Him.

Theosophy - An Introduction to the Supersensible Knowledge of the World and the Destination of Man (Paperback): Rudulf Steiner Theosophy - An Introduction to the Supersensible Knowledge of the World and the Destination of Man (Paperback)
Rudulf Steiner
R291 Discovery Miles 2 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2011 Reprint of 1922 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This book, subtitled "An Introduction to the Supersensible Knowledge of the World and the Destination of Man," is a good starting point among the hundreds of books written by Rudolf Steiner. He sees a tripartate model of the individual here: body, soul and spirit, cautioning us that these are only approximate terms. In the course of this short two hundred page book we explore higher realities which have eluded the scientific method: planes of seething elemental spirits, zones wandered by reincarnating entities, and more abstract 'places' where Platonic Archetypes dwell. He explains how auras are one modality of these higher existences which we can view in our present form. Steiner provides a precise, phenomenological description of his own supersensible experiences and the supersensible phenomena revealed by them. "Theosophy" is organized in four parts. First, Steiner builds up a comprehensive understanding of human nature, beginning with the physical bodily nature and moving up through the soul nature to our spiritual being: the "I" and the higher spiritual aspects of our being. This then leads to the experience of the human being as a sevenfold interpenetrated being of body, soul, and spirit. Secondly, Steiner gives an extraordinary overview of the laws of reincarnation and the workings of karma as we pass from one life to the next. Thirdly, Steiner shows the different ways in;which we live, during this life on earth and after death, in the three worlds of body, soul and spirit, as well as the ways in which these worlds in turn live into us. Fourthly, a succinct description is given of the path of knowledge by which each one of us can begin to understand the marvelous and harmonious complexity of the psycho-spiritual worlds in the fullness.

The hatred didn t exist at the beginning of the war. But soon after the Battle of Queenston Heights and the death of General Brock, the War of 1812 became more a case of survival of the fittest. Besides the brutal fighting; perhaps the most notable aspect of the War of 1812 was the hatred. If not, then why would the dead remain restless?

It was a barbaric war; in an inhospitable climate; with an abundant number of ghost creating opportunities. There were nasty endings from bayonets, swords, musket balls and cannon balls; plus, two huge explosions at Fort York and Fort Erie which resulted in missing bones and unmarked graves.

If you add savagery and death by tomahawk to the following; then death from drowning, freezing, disease, burning and sickness would include a greater numbers of victims than the major battles.

If you thought that being wounded was a better fate, then think again. Instead of a proper pain killer, the wounded were given rum and a musket ball to clamp between their teeth while they braved the most hideous fate possible for wounded soldiers: the barbaric battlefield medical practice of amputation. If a soldier s last memory on earth was being wounded before he died, then that agony might also survive the grave.

Because both America and Britain were not prepared to wage a war with each, there was a shortage of regular soldiers to command in 1812. Therefore, the North American armies were also comprised of militia, Native American Indians and part-time soldiers. Moreover, what started as a political row in the seats of power became more of a personal matter at the local level. In addition to the mounting anger, there was pressure on both sides to increase the number of regular troops in the field as the war continued. The increase in regular troops contributed to a more bitter and violent war, with the final result being several large scale battles and a siege.

Why did the dead remain restless you might ask? Why indeed.

Hauntings Resolved - A Step by Step Guide (Paperback): Penny Barber Hauntings Resolved - A Step by Step Guide (Paperback)

R259 Discovery Miles 2 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For those seeking answers to the age-old question of whether there is life after death and what those who have passed from this physical realm to another are doing in that afterlife, this book gives encouragement, comfort, truth, and spiritual guidance. Author and medium Penny Barber dispels the misconception that Spirits are malevolent beings trying to cause harm. Instead, Barber's intuitive message is one of love, hope, and understanding-the dead (spirits) are simply human souls needing loving help. Based on actual hauntings-from buildings to battlegrounds-Barber deftly interprets what the "Astral plane" really is. Her methods are described in detail to help the reader rethink his/her attitude about life and death, as well as providing invaluable advice on how one can be open to receiving guidance from and giving help to the "Spirit Helpers." This beautiful narration offers an explanation, dispels fears about death, and gives help to those who Barber refers to as the "sensitives." After reading, you'll master your own mental, emotional and physical planes of existence, and in doing so, bring peace to others. Penny Barber is a writer, teacher, healer and medium. Ms. Barber received a prestigious award from the Spiritualists National Union and is a recommended and recognized top medium by the organization. She lives in Cheshire, England.

In the tradition of their "Haunting of the Presidents, "national bestselling authors Joel Martin and William J. Birnes write "The Haunting of America: From The Salem Witch Trials to Harry Houdini, "the only book to tell the story of how paranormal events influenced and sometimes even drove political events. In a narrative retelling of American history that begins with the Salem Witch Trials of the seventeenth century, Martin and Birnes unearth the roots of America's fascination with the ghosts, goblins, and demons that possess our imaginations and nightmares. The authors examine the political history of the United States through the lens of the paranormal and investigate the spiritual events that inspired public policy: channelers and meduims who have advised presidents, UFOs that frightened the nation's military into launching nuclear bomber squadrons toward the Soviet Union, out-of-body experiencers deployed to gather sensitive intelligence on other countries, and even spirits summoned to communicate with living politicians. "The Haunting of America" is a thrilling exploration of the often unexpected influences of the paranormal on science, medicine, law, government, the military, psychology, theology, death and dying, spirituality, and pop culture.
