An in-depth look at the invention and development of the electric
guitar, this book explores how the electric guitar's design has
changed and what its design over the years has meant for its sound.
A heavily illustrated history with amps turned up to eleven,
Amplified celebrates this beloved instrument and reveals how it has
evolved through the experiments of amateur makers and part-time
tinkerers. Digging deep into archives and featuring new interviews
with makers and players, it will find admirers in all shredders,
luthiers, and fans of electric sound.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Randy Wood was a forerunner in the vintage
instrument industry. Known as the instrument repairman to the
stars, the list of Wood's clients reads like a Hall of Fame roster:
Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins, Emmylou
Harris, Billy Gibbons, Bill Monroe, Keith Richards, Roy Acuff,
Ricky Skaggs, and Hank Williams Jr. . . . to name a few. In Randy
Wood: The Lore of the Luthier, Daniel Wile traces the life and work
of a man who quietly influenced a hidden history of bluegrass and
country music. In his twenties, Wood vowed to avoid complacency in
his work. What started simply as a quest to find fulfillment turned
into a career that has shaped a generation of musicians,
professional and amateur alike. Through his incredible gift for
lutherie, Wood brought cherished pre-WWII instruments back to life,
many of which were considered beyond repair. He crafted his own
instruments as well, based on what he learned from vintage
instruments, and these instruments found their way into the hands
of some of the most renowned musicians, thanks in part to Wood's
strategic location in Nashville during the resurgence of country
music in the 1970s. Humble, unassuming, and unfazed by the presence
of celebrities, Wood has spent his life devoted to building and
repairing stringed instruments. Wood also built community. After
tiring of big-city Nashville, he retreated to the Georgia coast,
where his home shop became a hub of bluegrass activity. He
eventually opened a new shop near Savannah, where a new generation
of friends and strangers can come in, visit, and pick a little.
Randy's stories, complemented with those of his friends and family,
create a compelling picture of a modest man with a talent for his
craft, a genuine care for people, and the courage to follow his
passion.

Bloomfield is number one. Not only did he play over the top well
and I mean amazingly well but he also played what I call 'real'
guitar. If you've ever heard Mike Bloomfield, then you know what
I'm talking about. It just came from his heart. I never got a
chance to see him because he died at an early age, but he was a big
influence on me as to the way I learned to bend strings and get
everything I could out of a note. One of the best players ever."
Mick Mars (Motley Crue)

(Book). The story of Epiphone, one of the oldest and most famous
guitar companies, is told by former staff historian Walter Carter.
It's an epic story spanning three centuries, from Old World roots
in the 19th century to the golden age of American makers in the
20th century and onward into the global market of the new
millennium. It's the story of America's business, from an
individual luthier to a family business and on to corporate
ownership. And it's the story of American popular music, powered by
Epiphone guitars, from big-bodied Emperor that drove the swing
bands of the 1930s, to the electric hollowbodies of the 1960s used
by The Beatles and studio ace Howard Roberts, to custom solidbody
models for such modern rockers as Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Jeff
Waters (Annihilator), and Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance).
Beautifully illustrated with photos of all the important Epiphone
instruments and the extraordinary musicians who played them, this
is a fascinating history of an iconic name in the world of the
guitar.
