Chronic Pain and Family - A Clinical Perspective (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Ranjan Roy Chronic Pain and Family - A Clinical Perspective (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Ranjan Roy
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past two decades attention to family issues in relation to chronic pain has been on the rise. There has been a proliferation of research and clinical literature in the field since the first major review on this topic was conducted in 1982. However, no comprehensive review book has been published. Generally speaking, the role of the family in chronic pain literature has been reported from four perspectives: (1) family factors in the etiology of chronic pain; (2) role of spouse in the perpetuation of pain behaviors; (3) impact of chronic pain on family functioning and on the health of spouse and children; and (4) family therapy for these families.

The main thrust of this book will be the issues of impact on the family and therapy. The broader literature of family issues in medical disorders will be incorporated into the body of the book to allow the reader to become familiar with some of the common problems shared by medically ill and chronic pain families and many problems that appear to be specifically associated with chronic pain. The book will offer clinical guidelines in conducting family assessment and couple and family therapy for these patients. This book will not be simply an update, but will adopt a fresh approach to this complex clinical area. The book will have 10 chapters. Each chapter will report the current state of knowledge through a comprehensive review of the most recent literature, and discuss relevant clinical issues through extensive use of case illustrations. The chapters will be designed to bring the reader up to date on the literature as well as provide clinical guidelines for practice.

R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An increasing number of studies have been conducted on the role of expression and regulation of emotion in health. Emotion Regulation addresses the question of these studies from diverse angles while encompassing conceptual, developmental, and clinical issues. Central concepts discussed in this volume that are related to health include: coping styles and aggression, alexithymia, emotional intelligence, emotional expression and depression, emotional expression and anxiety disorders, in addition to the emotional competence in children. The book is unique in describing up-to-date theories and empirical research in the area of emotional expression and health.

Promoting Self-Change From Addictive Behaviors - Practical Implications for Policy, Prevention, and Treatment (Paperback,... Promoting Self-Change From Addictive Behaviors - Practical Implications for Policy, Prevention, and Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Harald Klingemann, Linda Carter-sobell
R1,518 Discovery Miles 15 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the few books on the topic, this updated edition offers alternatives to disease models of addiction by exploring personal pathways to recovery. Focusing on alcohol and drug problems, it provides a literature review of 40 years of studies on self-change with particular emphasis on the current decade and methodological issues (starting with how much or how little treatment constitutes "treatment"). The 24 experts keep the coverage consistently readable, and dozens of brief narratives from individuals who have successfully recovered from an addictive behavior without formal help lend valuable personal perspectives.

Geropsychology and Long Term Care - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009):... Geropsychology and Long Term Care - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009)
Erlene Rosowsky, Joseph M Casciani, Merla Arnold
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is with great pride that the Psychologists in Long Term Care (PLTC) have sponsored The Professional Educational Long-Term Care Training Manual, and now its second iteration, Geropsychology and Long Term Care: A Practitioner's Guide. Education of psychologists working in long-term care settings is consistent with PLTC's mission to assure the provision of high-quality psychological services for a neglected sector of the population, i.e., residents in nursing homes and assisted-living communities. To this end, direct training of generalist psychologists in the nuances of psychological care delivery in long-term care settings has been a major priority. It is a tribute to the accelerating nature of research in long-term care settings that a revision is now necessary. After all, the Professional Educational Training Manual's initial publication date was only in 2001. However, in the intervening years, much progress has been made in addressing assessment and intervention strategies tailored to the needs of this frail but quite diverse population. It is so gratifying to be able to say that there is now a corpus of scientific knowledge to guide long-term care service delivery in long-term care settings.

Andrew C Page, Werner G. K. Stritzke, Peter M McEvoy
R1,554 Discovery Miles 15 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This third edition provides a thorough real-world exploration of the scientist-practitioner model, enabling clinical psychology trainees to develop the core competencies required in an increasingly interdisciplinary healthcare environment. The book has been comprehensively revised to reflect shifts towards transdiagnostic practice, co-design principles, and personalized medicine, and features new chapters on low intensity psychological interventions and private practice. Fully updated for the DSM-5 and ICD-11, provides readers with a contemporary account of diagnoses. It covers practical skills such as interviewing, diagnosis, assessment, case formulation, treatment, case management, and process issues with emphasis on the question 'how would a scientist-practitioner think and act?' The book equips trainees to deliver the accountable, efficient, and effective client-centred service demanded of professionals in the modern integrated care setting by demonstrating how an evidence-base can influence every decision of a clinical psychologist. Essential reading for all those enrolled in, or contemplating, postgraduate studies in clinical psychology.

Psychological Approaches to Generalized Anxiety Disorder - A Clinician's Guide to Assessment and Treatment (Paperback,... Psychological Approaches to Generalized Anxiety Disorder - A Clinician's Guide to Assessment and Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Holly Hazlett-Stevens
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the hallmarks of generalized anxiety disorder, along with diffuse pathological worry and somatic complaints, is its resistance to therapy. Of available treatment modalities for GAD, cognitive-behavioral therapy garners the best empirical support in terms of successful long-term results. Psychological Approaches to Generalized Anxiety Disorder offers clinicians a wide variety of CBT strategies to help clients develop core anxiety-reduction skills, presented so that readers can hone their own clinical skills.

Concise without skimping on information, this book reviews current theory and research, addresses important diagnostic issues, and provides salient details in these key areas: Assessment procedures and treatment planning; Latest therapy outcome data, including findings on newer therapies; Specific CBT techniques, including cognitive strategies, psychoeducation, anxiety monitoring, relaxation exercises, and more; Dealing with noncompliance, client ambivalence, and other challenges to therapy; Special considerations for treating older adults with GAD; Relapse prevention, transition issues, and ending treatment.

Psychological Approaches to Generalized Anxiety Disorder has much information of interest to new and seasoned clinicians, clinical researchers, and academic psychologists. It is also an especially valuable reference for graduate students treating or studying the anxiety spectrum.

Lessons Learned - Risk Management Issues in Genetic Counseling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Susan... Lessons Learned - Risk Management Issues in Genetic Counseling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Susan Schmerler
R3,119 Discovery Miles 31 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

No one wants to be sued. A lawsuit is an assault on one s self-image, reputation, and livelihood. It is physically, mentally, and financially draining. Professionals get sued because an individual believes she has been harmed or thinks there is enough evidence to convince a jury that she has been harmed. An accusation of harm can be expressed in different legal terms, such as breach of contract or negligence. The profession of genetic counseling has developed within the field of medicine, so that a medical model usually applies. Therefore, a formal complaint by a patient about a genetic counselor would come under the laws that apply to medicine as opposed to business. Most commonly, these complaints take the form of a malpractice lawsuit that claims malpractice or negligence.

The purpose of this book is (1) to provide genetic counselors with varying levels of experience and expertise with heightened awareness of the sources and processes of the law as it can affect their practice; (2) to offer them strategies for minimizing the potential for their being named in a lawsuit; and (3) to provide guidance for the management of current and emerging situations. The book discusses the day-to-day practices of genetic counselors and identifies areas in which possible causes of liability can be found. It looks closely at a negligence lawsuit as it would concern a genetic counselor, so that readers may learn where the potholes hazards and how to avoid them. "

Understanding Public Health - Productive Processing of Internal and External Reality (Paperback): Klaus Hurrelmann, Matthias... Understanding Public Health - Productive Processing of Internal and External Reality (Paperback)
Klaus Hurrelmann, Matthias Richter
R1,295 Discovery Miles 12 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book develops a new model of the genesis of health, on the basis of the interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Hurrelmann and Richter build upon the basic theories of health and the popular model of salutogenesis to offer a comprehensive interdisciplinary theory of health genesis and success: Productive Processing of Reality (PPR). The authors show that health is the lifelong dynamic process of dealing with the internal reality of physical and psychological impulses and the external reality of social and material impulses. To demonstrate this, the book is split into three interconnected parts. Part A analyses the determinants of health, providing an overview of the insights of current research and the impact of socioeconomic influences and gender on health. Part B covers public health, social, learning and coping theories, all of which understand health as an interaction between people and their environment. Part C draws on these four theories to outline PPR, stressing the interrelation between physical and mental constitution and the demands of the social and mental environment, and suggesting strategies for coping with these demands during the life course. Understanding Public Health: Productive Processing of Internal and External Reality will be valuable reading for students and researchers in psychology, sociology, educational science, public health and medical science, and for policymakers in public health.

Coping with Chronic Illness and Disability - Theoretical, Empirical, and Clinical Aspects (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Coping with Chronic Illness and Disability - Theoretical, Empirical, and Clinical Aspects (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Erin Martz, Hanoch Livneh
R3,388 Discovery Miles 33 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Individuals responses to their chronic illness or disability (CID) vary widely. Some are positive and productive, some negative and self-defeating, and some have elements of both. "Coping with Chronic Illness and Disability" synthesizes the growing literature on these coping styles and strategies by analyzing how individuals with CID face challenges, find and use their strengths, and alter their environment to fit their life-changing realities.

The book s first section provides readers with the major theories and conceptual perspectives on coping, with special emphasis on social aspects and models of coping with different types of CID. In Part Two, an array of specific medical conditions is covered. Each chapter supplies a clinical description, current empirical findings on coping, effective medical, physical, and psychological interventions, employment issues, and social concerns. This book includes: Up-to-date information on coping with high-profile conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injury, in-depth coverage of HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, and severe mental illness, coverage of therapeutic modalities adopted for treatment of people with CID, review of the current state of coping theory and research, appendix of instruments frequently used in assessment of coping.

The editors skillful balance between theoretical and practical material will help rehabilitation specialists (particularly psychologists, counselors, social workers, and health-care providers) develop new insights into promoting successful coping, and discern new means of changing its less effective forms. Students in the helping professions, as well as individuals experiencing CID, may also find this multifaceted book useful for understanding some of the psychosocial dynamics of living with CID."

Fragmented Intimacy - Addiction in a Social World (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Peter J. Adams Fragmented Intimacy - Addiction in a Social World (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Peter J. Adams
R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Here is the first major work that examines the benefits of applying social understanding to addiction. The author demonstrates how a social perspective shifts the paradigm from viewing a person in terms of "particles" to viewing a person in terms of relationships. This reorientation creates promising new opportunities for intervention. The book discusses recent advances in theories on community capacity building, resilience, and social ecology alongside their practical applications. Written in an engaging style, the book features numerous vignettes, key points, and illustrations that help you apply the material in your own practice.

The Foundations of Ethology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1981): K. Lorenz The Foundations of Ethology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1981)
K. Lorenz; Translated by K. Lorenz, R. W. Kickert
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a contribution to the history of ethology-not a definitive history, but the personal view of a major figure in that story. It is all the more welcome because such a grand theme as ethology calls for a range of perspectives. One reason is the overarching scope of the subject. Two great questions about life that constitute much of biology are "How does it work (structure and function)?" and "How did it get that way (evolu tion and ontogeny)?" Ethology addresses the antecedent of "it. " Of what are we trying to explain the mechanism and development? Surely behav ior, in all its wealth of detail, variation, causation, and control, is the main achievement of animal evolution, the essential consequence of animal structure and function, the raison d' etre of all the rest. Ethology thus spans between and overlaps with the ever-widening circles of ecol ogy over the eons and the ever-narrowing focus of physiology of the neurons. Another reason why the history of ethology needs perspectives is the recency of its acceptance. For such an obviously major aspect of animal biology, it is curious how short a time-less than three decades-has seen the excitement of an active field and a substantial fraternity of work ers, the addition of professors and courses to departments and curricula in biology (still far from universal}, and the normal complement of spe cial journals, symposia, and sessions at congresses."

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Illness and Disability (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Renee... Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Illness and Disability (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Renee R. Taylor
R3,639 Discovery Miles 36 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Severe pain, debilitating fatigue, sleep disruption, severe gastrointestinal distress these hallmarks of chronic illness complicate treatment as surely as they disrupt patients lives, in no small part because of the overlap between biological pathology and resulting psychological distress. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Illness and Disability cuts across formal diagnostic categories to apply proven therapeutic techniques to potentially devastating conditions, from first assessment to end of treatment.

Four extended clinical case examples of patients with chronic fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, inoperable cancer, and Crohn s disease are used throughout the book to demonstrate how cognitive-behavioral interventions can be used to effectively address ongoing medical stressors and their attendant depression, anxiety, and quality-of-life concerns. At the same time, they highlight specific patient and therapist challenges commonly associated with chronic conditions.

From implementing core CBT strategies to ensuring medication compliance, Renee Taylor offers professionals insights for synthesizing therapeutic knowledge with practical understanding of chronic disease. Her nuanced client portraits also show how individual patients can vary even within themselves.

This book offers clinicians invaluable help with

- Conceptualizing patient problems

- Developing the therapeutic relationship

- Pacing of therapy

- Cognitive restructuring

- Behavioral modification

- Problem solving

- Fostering coping and adapting skills

Taylor s coverage is both clean and hands-on, with helpful assessments and therapy worksheets for quick reference. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Illness and Disability gives practitioners of CBT new insights into this population and provides newer practitioners with vital tools and tactics. All therapists will benefit as their clients can gain new confidence and regain control of their lives."

Intentional Self-Development and Positive Ageing - How Individuals Select and Pursue Life Goals (Hardcover): Bernhard Leipold Intentional Self-Development and Positive Ageing - How Individuals Select and Pursue Life Goals (Hardcover)
Bernhard Leipold
R4,464 Discovery Miles 44 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Are we in control of our own development in adulthood, or are we shaped by circumstances beyond our control? By adopting the concept of intentional self-development (ISD), this text outlines an action-theoretical approach to human development that emphasizes both an individual's ability to shape their own development throughout the lifespan, and the extent to which this potential is limited. By examining general age-related changes and critical life events, Intentional Self-Development and Positive Ageing explores the adaptive cognitive-motivational processes that generate positive development in adulthood, including developmental tasks, cognitive changes, life-stage transitions, and biological and neural processes. Leipold goes on to discuss the concept of positive ageing, highlighting the flexibility of the term and evaluating it from multiple perspectives to demonstrate its subjectivity, as well as its importance. This text also discusses the importance of resilience in positive development, contributing to the search for conditions conducive to positive life conduct across the lifespan. This book will be essential reading for undergraduates and postgraduates studying lifespan development and gerontology, positive psychology, or health psychology, as well as researchers in those fields. It will also be of interest to developmental counsellors, clinicians, and other applied occupational groups who are seeking to understand the psychological basis of actions.

Men's Health Equity - A Handbook (Hardcover): Derek M. Griffith, Marino A. Bruce, Roland J. Thorpe, Jr. Men's Health Equity - A Handbook (Hardcover)
Derek M. Griffith, Marino A. Bruce, Roland J. Thorpe, Jr.
R7,982 Discovery Miles 79 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Worldwide, men have more opportunities, privileges, and power, yet they also have shorter life expectancies than women. Why is this? Why are there stark differences in the burden of disease, quality of life, and length of life amongst men, by race, ethnicity, (dis)ability status, sexual orientation, gender identity, rurality, and national context? Why is this a largely unexplored area of research? Men's Health Equity is the first volume to describe men's health equity as a field of study that emerged from gaps in and between research on men's health and health inequities. This handbook provides a comprehensive review of foundations of the field; summarizes the issues unique to different populations; discusses key frameworks for studying and exploring issues that cut across populations in the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Central America, and South America; and offers strategies for improving the health of key population groups and achieving men's health equity overall. This book systematically explores the underlying causes of these differences, describes the specific challenges faced by particular groups of men, and offers policy and programmatic strategies to improve the health and well-being of men and pursue men's health equity. Men's Health Equity will be the first collection to present the state of the science in this field, its progress, its breadth, and its future. This book is an invaluable resource for scholars, researchers, students, and professionals interested in men's health equity, men's health, psychology of men's health, gender studies, public health, and global health.

Health and Wellbeing in Late Life - Perspectives and Narratives from India (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Prasun Chatterjee Health and Wellbeing in Late Life - Perspectives and Narratives from India (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Prasun Chatterjee
R1,654 Discovery Miles 16 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book takes a multidisciplinary approach to provide a holistic understanding of late old age, and situates the aged person within the context of family, caregivers, clinical and other institutions. All through the book, the author discusses preparedness for an aging individual as well as the society in the Indian context. The book highlights inevitable but mostly neglected health issues like depression, dementia, fall, and frailty and provides detailed analyses of solutions that are practicable in low resource settings. It also brings up intergenerational differences and harmony in the context of holistic care of older Indians. Alongside clinical perspectives, the book uses narratives of elderly patients to dwell on the myriad of problems and issues that constitute old age healthcare. Demonstrating cases that range from the most influential to the most underprivileged elderly in India, the book enlightens multiple caregivers-doctors, nurses, and professional caregivers as well as family members-about the dynamic approach required in dealing with complex issues related to late old age. The narratives make the book relatable and interesting to non-academic readers, with important lessons for gerontological and geriatric caregiving. It is also of use to older adults in preparing for active aging.

The Psychology of Lifestyle - Promoting Healthy Behaviour (Paperback): Kathryn Thirlaway, Dominic Upton The Psychology of Lifestyle - Promoting Healthy Behaviour (Paperback)
Kathryn Thirlaway, Dominic Upton
R1,270 Discovery Miles 12 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Improving lifestyles is thought to be one of the most effective means of reducing mortality and morbidity in the developed world. However, despite decades of health promotion, there has been no significant difference to lifestyles and instead there are rising levels of inactivity and obesity. The Psychology of Lifestyle addresses the role psychology can play in reversing the trend of deleterious lifestyle choices. It considers the common characteristics of lifestyle behaviours and reflects on how we can inform and improve interventions to promote healthy lifestyles. Health promotion has taught people what a healthy lifestyle is - now we need to enable people to live that life. The chapters cover key lifestyle behaviours that impact on health -smoking, eating, physical activity, drinking, sex and drug use - as well as combinations of behaviours. Each chapter contains interventions that have been developed to influence and promote lifestyle change among patients and clients. This unique book will enable readers to develop a clear theoretical and practical grasp of the psychological principles involved in all aspects of lifestyle change. It is an invaluable resource for students and professionals committed to health promotion within all health-related disciplines.

Stigmatization, Tolerance and Repair - An Integrative Psychological Analysis of Responses to Deviance (Hardcover, New): Anton... Stigmatization, Tolerance and Repair - An Integrative Psychological Analysis of Responses to Deviance (Hardcover, New)
Anton J. M. Dijker, Willem Koomen
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Society is faced with a variety of undesirable behaviours and conditions such as crime, mental and physical illnesses and disabilities, that usually provoke different responses in people such as emotions of anger, fear or pity. In our evolutionary past, these emotions adaptively motivated the repair of interpersonal relationships, whereas more recently they may also result in other types of social control such as stigmatization or tolerance. Dijker and Koomen show, on the basis of elementary psychological processes, how peoples' responses are not only dependent on type of deviance but also on personality, situation, historical period and culture. They also examine the implications of these responses for the well-being and coping of people with deviant conditions or stigmas. This book provides conceptual tools for developing interventions to reduce stigmatization and offers a deeper understanding of the psychological basis of social control as well as opportunities to influence its potentially harmful consequences.

Women and Retirement - Challenges of a New Life Stage (Paperback): Susan Moore, Doreen Rosenthal Women and Retirement - Challenges of a New Life Stage (Paperback)
Susan Moore, Doreen Rosenthal
R1,302 Discovery Miles 13 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the last century, changes to the nature and patterns of women's working lives have been vast. Notably, the huge increase in women's participation in the paid workforce means that today women are retiring in unprecedented numbers. How do they cope with this lifestyle transition? What major difficulties do they face? How do they process the problems associated with managing this transition in fulfilling ways while juggling family, financial, friendship, ageing and health issues? To date, most retirement studies have focused on men, and therefore gender-specific issues relating to post-work life, such as the pay gap, the double shift, women's longer lifespans and their traditional roles as carers and social nurturers, have been afforded far less attention. Women and Retirement: Challenges of a New Life Stage is the first book of its kind to examine women's retirement using a lifespan perspective. Based on the authors' extensive study of over 1,000 retired Australian women as well as current research, the book presents models of various retirement trajectories and compares women's experiences with the more widely researched retirement experiences of men. Moore and Rosenthal consider the nature of the transition from full-time work to retirement and the many different pathways and factors influencing this journey: women's financial status in the retirement years; their health changes; and the varied activity patterns they adopt. Women and Retirement is a comprehensive, up-to-date and evidence-based review of the female retirement experience. It will be invaluable for courses on ageing and health within psychology, women's studies, social work and sociology, and for use by practitioners in these fields.

Psychology of Medicine & Surgery - A Guide for Psychologists, Counsellors, Nurses & Doctors (Paperback): P. Salmon Psychology of Medicine & Surgery - A Guide for Psychologists, Counsellors, Nurses & Doctors (Paperback)
P. Salmon
R1,816 Discovery Miles 18 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

There is now a substantial body of psychological knowledge, based on research and clinical experience, which supports and guides best practice in dealing with health- and illness-related behaviour. Peter Salmon offers a strong conceptual framework which unifies this knowledge within clinical contexts and problems. Based on the author's special interests in acute physical illness and surgery, this text shows how the beliefs, emotions and behaviour of individuals (both lay people and health professionals) can have a profound effect on the processes of understanding, communication and coping in the course of diagnosis and treatment. Peter Salmon, a senior figure in clinical health psychology, has extensive experience of training medical and health care professionals, and of dealing with patients and families. His book offers
* A focus on acute illness and surgery, in contrast to the many other books which deal with chronic illness and health promotion
* An introduction to psychological concepts and models, situated within the clinical reality of presentation, diagnosis, communication, treatment, and the patient-professional relationship
* Guidance on evaluation of research and clinical practice which will help to inform a better understanding of behaviour and relationships in acute illness and surgery and wider medical contexts.
Students and professionals in clinical health psychology, health care and medicine should read this book for an accessible, authoritative account of how psychological knowledge can help them, why people feel and behave as they do, and which medical situations can be enlightened and facilitated by the integration of psychological principles intotherapeutic practice. This book appears in The Wiley Series in Clinical Psychology Series Editor: J. Mark G. Williams University of Wales, Bangor, UK

This book presents specific methods for the physical rehabilitation, mental health restoration, and academic remediation of post-institutionalized international adoptees. The focus of the book is on the neurological, psychological, and educational consequences of complex childhood trauma in the context of a fundamental change in the social situation of development of former orphanage residents. A discussion of after-adoption traumatic experiences includes a critique of certain "conventional" approaches to the treatment of mental health issues and different disabilities in international adoptees. Using his 30-year background in research and clinical practice, the author expertly describes and analyses a range of methodologies in order to provide an integrated and practical system of "scaffolding" and "compensation" for the successful rehabilitation and remediation of children with ongoing traumatic experiences. This is essential reading for researchers and practicing clinicians concerned with childhood trauma, remedial education, and issues of international adoption.
