The fire at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City, which
claimed the lives of 146 young immigrant workers, is one of the
worst disasters since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution,
and the disaster, which brought attention to the labor movement in
America, is part of the curriculum in classrooms throughout the
country.
Told from alternating points of view, this historical novel draws
upon the experiences of three very different young women: Bella,
who has just emigrated from Italy and doesn't speak a word of
English; Yetta, a Russian immigrant and crusader for labor rights;
and Jane, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Bella and Yetta
work together at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory under terrible
conditions--their pay is docked for even the slightest mistake, the
bosses turn the clocks back so closing time is delayed, and they
are locked into the factory all day, only to be frisked before they
leave at night to make sure they haven't stolen any shirtwaists.
When the situation worsens, Yetta leads the factory's effort to
strike, and she meets Jane on the picket line. Jane, who feels
trapped by the limits of her own sheltered existence, joins a group
of high-society women who have taken an interest in the strike as a
way of supporting women's suffrage. Through a series of twists and
turns, the three girls become fast friends--and all of them are in
the Triangle Shirtwast Factory on March 25, 1911, the day of the
fateful fire. In a novel that puts a human face on the tragedy,
Margaret Peterson Haddix has created a sweeping, forceful tale that
will have readers guessing until the last page who--if
anyone--survives.

This heart-warming and heartfelt debut picture book from
multi-award-winning author, Patrice Lawrence, will help ensure that
the struggles and achievements of the Windrush generation are never
forgotten. One day, Ava is asked to dress as an inspirational
figure for assembly at school, but who should she choose? Granny
suggests famous familiar figures such as Winifred Atwell, Mary
Seacole and Rosa Parks, and tells Ava all about their fascinating
histories, but Ava's classmates have got there first - and she must
choose someone else. But who? And then Ava finds a mysterious old
suitcase - Granny's "grip" - and Granny begins to share her own
history, and how she came to England on the Empire Windrush many
years ago. She tells her story through the precious items that
accompanied her on the original voyage, each one evoking a memory
of home, and as Ava listens to how Granny built a life for herself
in England, determined to stay against the odds and despite
overwhelming homesickness, she realises that there is a hero very
close to home that she wants to celebrate more than anyone - her
very own brave and beloved granny. "This book is a heart-warming
intergenerational account of the Windrush experience, told with
love and attention to detail by Patrice Lawrence and stunningly
brought to life with Camilla Sucre's beautiful artwork. An absolute
must-have for any collection." - Dapo Adeola Every Nosy Crow

she's reading about in English class. After Shona is unexpectedly
given a mobile phone, she begins to suspect there's something fishy
about the new boys she's met. Where did the phone come from? And
some gifts, she soon learns, aren't exactly free... Read two
stories at once - both illustrated by Tony Ross.
