Oswald Harcourt-Davis joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1916 to become a despatch rider. He was allocated a Triumph motorcycle at Abbeville France on 18th July 1916 and was attached to the ANZACs for the duration of the war which saw him motorcycling around the Somme and Ypres Salient areas. He won his military medal at Messines.

Erinoid. n. name given to a plastics material manufactured from milk: (arch.) artificial horn: also the name of a Company in Stroud, Gloucestershire where it was produced throughout much of the 20th century! This publication tells the story of the development of the Company into a major British manufacturer of plastics materials. It is extensively illustrated with historic photographs of the site, the manufacturing processes, the workforce and even the company's splendid sporting facilities. Erinoid was used to make fountain pens, buttons, knitting needles and combs. It would have been handled daily by almost everyone in Great Britain but is now almost completely forgotten.
In 1974 the Queen's Gallantry Medal was instituted to replace awards for gallantry in the Order of the British Empire for actions not quite meriting the award of the George Medal. Since then it has been awarded on 1,044 occasions, which includes 38 posthumous awards and 19 second awards. 'For Exemplary Bravery' explains in detail, for the first time, why the Queen's Gallantry Medal was instituted.
