Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing
guru like Marie Kondo-he's just a regular guy who was stressed out
and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he
decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he
didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained
true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for
everything around him. In Goodbye, Things Sasaki modestly shares
his personal minimalist experience, offering specific tips on the
minimizing process and revealing how the new minimalist movement
can not only transform your space but truly enrich your life. The
benefits of a minimalist life can be realized by anyone, and
Sasaki's humble vision of true happiness will open your eyes to
minimalism's potential.

drying, and select the most appropriate equipment for turning. Dick
demonstrates the proper use of bowl gouges, scrapers, and other
tools needed for each step. Sanding and finishing techniques are
covered as well. Finally, the gallery includes a wonderful
selection of bowls in different woods and styles to inspire your
ongoing work. Hone your woodturning skills while producing elegant
bowls you will be proud of.
It was love at first sight. We drove up the long track, pulled into
the yard, and wow! What a view. I did the drawings myself, the
maximum we were told (in those days) about what one could get away
with in terms of planning permission. A local architect did the
formal drawings and submitted them for planning permission. I did
not intend to do the work myself, it simply happened by
circumstance. I put the groundwork out to tender to six
contractors. Only one bothered to reply and the quotation was
astronomic. The steelwork looked very complicated, but I went to
the structural engineer's office in Gloucester to chat about it. I
asked: 'It looks complicated, but could I do this myself?' Peter
Rowntree was very reassuring. 'It looks complicated because you are
looking at it in its entirety. Let me show you this corner here.'
And he then explained how the steels fitted together and how one
wired them up. After a quarter of an hour, he summarised by saying
'Yes, you could do it.' And I did! Working only on Saturdays, and
even then, not every Saturday, it took me seven years to complete
it to a point where we could move into the extension. I was
extremely sad to leave Hydefield and putting this book together has
been cathartic. I was tremendously proud of what I managed to build
and have wanted to produce this photo book to bring back the
memories of every little achievement.

Move past the "yuck factor" by learning the benefits and science
behind recycling wastewater to beat climate change. In recent
years, humans have begun to turn the age-old taboo against mixing
sewage and drinking water on its head by using advanced treated
wastewater to supplement a city's drinking water supply. This
increasingly widespread practice, known as potable reuse, qualifies
as nothing less than a drinking water revolution. Water reuse
offers a renewable, locally managed, and drought resistant water
supply. The Water Recycling Revolution tracks the story of this
development, examines the pros and cons, and explores its future
potential. In this book, William M. Alley and Rosemarie Alley
answer our most pressing questions: How do you get people to
overcome the visceral reaction known as the "Yuck Factor" and not
only drink, but appreciate, recycled water? What about all those
pharmaceuticals and personal care products that people casually
flush down the drain? Will diverting discharges from a wastewater
treatment plant damage downstream users or ecosystems that
previously depended on that water? And what are the implications
for climate change? These questions are answered by delving into
the history of major water recycling projects from California to
Virginia, each with a unique story of what led them to develop
potable reuse, as well as the challenges they had to overcome.
Additional concerns addressed include pathogens, contaminants of
emerging concern, achieving acceptable risk, onsite and
decentralized reuse systems, and direct potable reuse. Recycling
wastewater can make for a bright future in the fight against
climate change, and this book is a valuable resource to convince
readers.
Filled with space-saving storage and decorative details, these
unique homes under 1,200 square feet prove that bigger is not
always better. In recent years, many have turned our backs on the
trend for oversized houses and embraced small-space living.
Cosy, compact dwellings have so much to offer; they bring families
closer together and make it easier than ever to express personal
style. In Small Spaces, Big Appeal, Fifi O'Neill captures the
zeitgeist by showcasing homes across a spectrum of styles and
locations, and stories of contented homeowners who have created
unique, imaginative spaces. Living in a small home doesn’t
preclude having an elegant aesthetic. In fact, it allows you to
focus on the elements you truly appreciate and the spaces you will
use the most. Whether classically furnished or boasting a happy
informality, the little gems featured in this book are more infused
with a spirit than put together according to a set of rules. Rooms
are airy yet intimate, with nooks and alcoves that offer
daydreaming spots and built-in storage in spite of their modest
footprints. Whatever your preferred look – nostalgic,
romantic, modern, country, coastal, urban, minimalist or maximalist
– living small has big advantages. It encourage us to live more
simply and, best of all, to create spaces with style, grace and
versatility that rival homes of many times their size.Â
A charming, practical, and unsentimental approach to putting a home in order while reflecting on the tiny joys that make up a long life.
In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning “death” and städning meaning “cleaning.” This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs readers to embrace minimalism. Her radical and joyous method for putting things in order helps families broach sensitive conversations, and makes the process uplifting rather than overwhelming.
Margareta suggests which possessions you can easily get rid of (unworn clothes, unwanted presents, more plates than you’d ever use) and which you might want to keep (photographs, love letters, a few of your children’s art projects). Digging into her late husband’s tool shed, and her own secret drawer of vices, Margareta introduces an element of fun to a potentially daunting task. Along the way readers get a glimpse into her life in Sweden, and also become more comfortable with the idea of letting go.
The Sunday Times bestseller, Making It is an inspirational memoir
about beating the odds and turning things around even when it all
seems hopeless, by Jay Blades, the beloved star of hit BBC One show
The Repair Shop. We had our hardships, and there were times that we
didn't have a lot of food and didn't have a lot of money. But that
didn't stop me having the time of my life. In his book, Jay shares
the details of his life, from his childhood growing up sheltered
and innocent on a council estate in Hackney, to his adolescence
when he was introduced to violent racism at secondary school, to
being brutalized by police as a teen, to finally becoming the
presenter of the hit primetime show The Repair Shop. Jay reflects
on strength, weakness and what it means to be a man. He questions
the boundaries society places on male vulnerability and how letting
himself be nurtured helped him flourish into the person he is
today. An expert at giving a second life to cherished items, Jay's
positivity, pragmatism and kindness shine through these pages and
show that with care and love, anything can be mended.

are presented in a clear and concise way. The result is a project
of which the carver will be proud.
