First published in 1987 and named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book the following year, Damming the Delaware is the definitive study of two hundred years of water management history along the Delaware River. The history of the Tocks Island Dam Project is traced from an early 1783 anti-dam treaty, through the highly emotional environmental controversy in the 1970s, to the historic Good Faith agreement of the 1980s. The story involves the water politics of four states, two major U.S. cities, and the federal government, plus the influence of the environmental movement over major public works projects. In this second edition, the author updates the Tocks Island/Delaware River story to 2005. A major shift in the underlying philosophies of Delaware River management during the intervening years is described along with various successes and failures in water management. A Foreword to the second edition is written by Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper and Executive Director of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization that has both successfully fought dam projects and removed existing dams.
Louisiana's coastal wetlands represent a significant natural and economic resource for the state and the nation but have been disappearing at a rate of 25 to 35 square miles each year. In the past 50 years, more than 1,500 square miles have been lost. The wetlands contain 95 per cent of all marine species in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 per cent of the nation's fisheries, one of the largest habitats in the world for migratory waterfowl, and more than 25 per cent of all oil and gas used in the United States originates or pass through there. They also serve as a buffer for hurricanes. The state of Louisiana asked the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to convene a summit to discuss technical aspects involved in carrying out restoration programs, and to report on the insights that could be drawn from the summit. This report of the ASCE Task Committee on America's Wetland provides conclusions and recommendations concerning the technical topics discussed at the summit, as well as the Task Committee's recommendations for a path forward.
H2GEO: Geotechnical Engineering for Water Resources presents practical case studies and project results for geotechnical engineering on a variety of water resources projects located in Colorado and the Western United States. Practicing geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, and hydrologists share their unique project solutions and real-world experiences with actual projects, including Colorado's oldest water resources project, new and modified dams, pipelines, tunnels, flood hydrology, flood control, ground-water supply and wells, and surface reservoirs. The seventeen papers in this collection were presented at the 2004 Biennial Geotechnical Seminar in Denver, Colorado. Many of the papers in this ""Geotechnical Practical Publication"" deal with dams. These include the 1000-year-old reservoirs used by the Ancestral Puebloans at Mesa Verde. Other dam papers discuss new mountain dams and the expansion or repair of existing dams. Flood hydrology papers present the results of erosion control projects in areas scarred by wildfires, flood control in urban areas with intermittent streams, and riverbank slope stability. The underground papers deal with water tunnel rehabilitation, mine site cleanup, deep shaft modeling, and dam conduit repair. The last group of papers examines shallow and deep groundwater wells, as well as reservoirs built in alluvium and hard bedrock. All of the papers discuss actual projects with practical applications of geotechnical engineering innovation.
Advances in Coastal Structure Design presents a compendium of 10 papers addressing the state-of-the-art advances in Coastal Structure Design by internationally renowned authors. The papers focus on the tools and techniques used to analyze coastal processes and design engineering solutions to them. The first three chapters present multiple view points and policies regarding how the coastal-structure debate in the United States came to be and how policies are evolving to handle issues concerning the interactions of structures with shorelines. This book covers the basics of the hydrodynamics and vibration of structures subjected to environmental loads. This book is written for engineers, students of coastal processes and laypersons interested in beach nourishment, which consists of the placement of large quantities of good quality sediment on the beach to advance the shoreline seaward. The improvement of project performance through proper design and the predictability of performance are emphasized. The overall longevity of a project is addressed as are local erosional areas. The roles which wave height, project length and sediment quality play in project performance are addressed quantitatively. The results are illustrated through reference to a number of monitored nourishment projects. Biological and economic aspects of beach nourishment are addressed.
This book treats the subject of local scour around different kinds of marine structures, exposed to waves and/or currents. The first, major part of the book is devoted to marine pipelines, describing in detail all kinds of scour scenarios, and also making recommendations for scour protection. Other kinds of structures considered are single piles (slender or large), groups of piles, complex subsea structures, breakwaters, and seawalls. The scour due to ship propellers is also described. The book deals mainly with the scour in noncohesive sediment but, whenever possible, available literature on the scour in finer sediment has been incorporated. In addition, a chapter on the impact of wave-induced liquefaction is included.The authors' aim is to describe in detail the hydrodynamic processes causing the erosion. With a hydrodynamic understanding, it is easier for the consulting engineer to predict scour in those many cases where physical model tests are not available.
This verification report describes a field evaluation of the installation of a silt fence using the Tommy Silt Fence Static Slicing Method and compares this method to traditional trenching methods. The slicing method has been used extensively over the past few years, but has not undergone a true field application test by a third party. State Departments of Transportation and federal, state, and local environmental regulatory agencies have expressed a desire and, in some cases, a need, for baseline environmental data providing a general picture of performance and feasibility of the Tommy Slicing Method for silt fence installation and erosion control.

This engineering manual (EM) provides guidance for the structural design of closure structures for openings in levees and floodwalls of inland local flood protection projects (LFPPs). Design requirements for aluminum and steel stoplog closure structures and steel swing, miter, trolley, and rolling gate closure structures for openings in levees and floodwalls of LFPPs are addressed. This guidance provides a framework for incorporating the required elements of design execution into the design process for closure structures.
