Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction - A Guide to Clinical Management (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Gregory A Broderick Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction - A Guide to Clinical Management (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Gregory A Broderick
R2,723 Discovery Miles 27 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For the generation that reached sexual maturity in the 1960s, the "pill" became synonymous with sexual freedom and started a sexual revolution. For women it meant freedom from the fear of pregnancy, and for men enhanced sexual opportunity. The new era of the pill has nothing to do with fertility, but everything to do with sex. The first orally effective prescr- tion drug for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) was marketed in 1998. (R) Sildenafil (Viagra ) has rejuvenated the aging male veterans of the sexual revolution, forever changed the science of sexual medicine, and tra- formed society's perspective on aging and sex. This class of drugs, known as oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-type 5), is highly effective in the treatment of ED. Since its introduction there has been a much greater awa- ness of ED, its comorbidities, and its effects on the quality of life. In 1997, while preparing to address the Endocrine Society on the occasion of the 92nd American Urological Association meeting, I first looked at the p- clinical studies of sildenafil. I thought "this will change everything" and it clearly has-changing practice patterns in sexual medicine, and the at- tudes of patients, potential patients, and their partners. Two new PDE-type (R) (R) 5 inhibitors, tadalafil (Cialis ) and vardenafil (Levitra ), were first approved by the European Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products and subsequently by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 and 2004.

Fit For Fertility (Paperback, New Ed): Michael Dooley Fit For Fertility (Paperback, New Ed)
Michael Dooley
R375 Discovery Miles 3 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One in six couples have problems conceiving and many more suffer the pain of miscarriage, which FIT FOR FERTILITY also addresses. Much of the advice they're given is misleading or negative and IVF is often presented as the only option. In fact, it's been shown that an integrated approach to fertility treatment achieved the same success rates as IVF, without medical intervention, worry and expense. This is Michael's approach and is based on his hugely successful Fit for Fertility programme that combines changes to lifestyle, good nutrition and complementary therapies. FIT FOR FERTILITY will allow the reader to self diagnose and tailor their programme according to their needs. It is infused with Michael's up-beat philosophy and builds on his inspiring work to promise a genuine chance of success.

Fertility Problems - A Simple Guide (Paperback, 1st New edition): Ruth Chambers Fertility Problems - A Simple Guide (Paperback, 1st New edition)
Ruth Chambers
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One in seven couples experience problems in conceiving, and this book provides information about fertility investigations, treatments, management and dilemmas. This overview of the management of couples with fertility problems is a straightforward account of best practice in the UK today. Fertility treatments have many ethical implications and the book explains the challenges we face following new developments in assisted reproduction, cloning, surrogacy and rationing. Fertility Problems helps GPs and their teams undertake as much management as possible in primary care, and enables them to understand and explain the issues to infertile patients. The book is also useful for patients themselves. Junior doctors, nurses, counsellors and members of ethics committees will find it a valuable introduction and overview. Much of the material is based on the guidelines for clinical management produced by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The author is a general practitioner and former member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

The Whole Life Fertility Plan - Understanding What Effects Your Fertility to Help You Get Pregnant When You Want To... The Whole Life Fertility Plan - Understanding What Effects Your Fertility to Help You Get Pregnant When You Want To (Paperback)
Kyra Phillips, Jamie Grifo
R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A proactive and comprehensive resource that answers every question about fertility health and helps women understand and preserve their fertility options. Does stress affect your fertility? Should you avoid materials made with plastic? How does diet affect your chance of conception? Does acupuncture increase your chances? How old is too old? In The Whole Life Fertility Plan, Kyra Phillips and Dr. Jamie Grifo answer all your pressing questions about fertility health-and address things you didn't even know to ask-whether you're planning to wait to have kids or are starting the process now. Phillips spent her 20s and 30s building her career, and wasn't ready to start a family until she turned 40. She met with Dr. Grifo, the director at the renowned NYU Fertility Health Center, and after an uphill (but ultimately successful) battle on the road to conception, she learned that there were a number of things-simple things-she could have been doing differently over the years. For too long, women have believed that when it comes to their fertility, their bodies will cooperate when the time is right. But fertility is not unlike heart health; it's important to be proactive. As women are becoming increasingly aware of their fertility health and waiting longer to have children, they are starting to take control of their fertility long before they are ready to start trying. Whether you're in your 20s, 30s or 40s, and want to start a family now or down the line, don't leave it up to chance-educate yourself about what affects your fertility.

Towards a Professional Model of Surrogate Motherhood (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Ruth Walker, Liezl Van Zyl Towards a Professional Model of Surrogate Motherhood (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Ruth Walker, Liezl Van Zyl
R2,938 Discovery Miles 29 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book delves deeply into modern surrogacy arrangements, responding to both practical and ethical critiques by offering a radically new model for surrogate motherhood. Current practice distinguishes between two models of surrogacy - the altruistic (unpaid) model and the commercial (paid) model, both of which present social, ethical, and conceptual challenges. This book proposes a novel arrangement for surrogate motherhood - the professional model. Inspired by professions, such as nursing, teaching, and social work, the professional model acknowledges the caring motives that surrogate mothers have while at the same time compensating them for their work. Walker and Van Zyl adopt an evidence-based approach to explain that the professional model enables trust between intended parents and surrogates, provides professional support at every stage of the relationship, affords legal protections against exploitation and commodification, and recognizes the rights and interests of all parties, including the intended baby. The model applies to both transnational and domestic surrogacy and will be of great interest to policy makers, social researchers, bioethicists, legal scholars, fertility professionals, clinicians, and graduate students in psychology, philosophy, medicine and ethics.

Third-Party Reproduction - A Comprehensive Guide (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): James M. Goldfarb Third-Party Reproduction - A Comprehensive Guide (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
James M. Goldfarb
R4,722 Discovery Miles 47 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first IVF conceived birth in 1978 resulted in a significant growth of third party reproductive options which continue to raise ethical, legal, and psychological questions. Third party reproduction procedures can involve as many as five people: sperm donor, egg donor, gestational carrier, and intended parents. "Third-Party Reproduction: A Comprehensive Guide" utilizes experts in the field to address the medical, psychological, ethical and legal aspects of sperm donation, egg donation, embryo donation, and the use of gestational carriers. In addition, there are chapters on the medical and ethical aspects of posthumous reproduction, religious aspects of third party reproduction, and how to avoid pitfalls of third party reproduction. Aimed at physicians, trainees, psychologists, nurses, and social workers whose practices may include patients considering third party reproduction, the intent of this book is to provide a comprehensive and practical overview of the many aspects of third party reproduction to help all those involved to better understand them. Patients considering third party reproduction may also find value in this book.

Application of increasingly advanced new technology has allowed the field of embryo evaluation to evolve rapidly and dramatically over the past five years.
Human Preimplantation Embryo Selection assembles the leaders in the field of assisted reproduction to discuss their visions of dealing with the topic of embryo selection in the light of the limitations involving the fragility of the early human embryo.
The purpose of this book is to shed light on the ever-expanding techniques that are being employed and evaluated with regard to embryo selection. A comprehensive overview may guide the ART practitioner in choice of techniques and evaluation of benefits and drawbacks.
This book will provide an up-to-date overview and reference source: an invaluable tool for assisted reproductive practice worldwide.

Conservative Infertility Management (Hardcover): Christoph Keck, Clemens B. Tempfer, Jean Noel Hugues Conservative Infertility Management (Hardcover)
Christoph Keck, Clemens B. Tempfer, Jean Noel Hugues
R3,658 Discovery Miles 36 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this book is to fill the gap between the standard textbooks of obstetrics & gynecology - which do not cover (conservative) infertility treatment - and the specialized textbooks on ART - which don't address topics such as ovulation induction/IUI and the typical treatment of disorders associated with infertility, such as hyperandrogenism and endometriosis. In many countries, the management of infertility treatment is not done by IVF specialists but by general gynecologists or primary health practitioners. In most countries, specific training and/or a license is required to do 'invasive' infertility treatments, such as IVF/ICSI; however, conservative or semi-conservative treatments - such as IUI with or without ovulation induction - can be done without specific training/licensing. This concise, clinically oriented handbook is predominantly written for gynecologists, primary health practitioners, and medical students who want to improve their knowledge on this aspect of their work. Furthermore the aim is to highlight which types of disorders may be treated by conservative means and which types of disorder should be treated by invasive treatment options such as IVF/ICSI.

Allison Rosen, Jay Rosen
R2,731 Discovery Miles 27 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Wedding up-to-date scientific information to an understanding of the emotional burdens and ethical dilemmas that inhere in reproductive medicine, Frozen Dreams: Psychodynamic Dimensions of Infertility and Assisted Reproduction provides an overview of the psychology of infertility patients and of the evaluative, administrative, and especially psychotherapeutic issues involved in helping them. The contributors to this volume, who include professionals from nationally prestigious reproductive programs and psychotherapists who evaluate and work clinically with infertility patients, explore the complex choices about life and death that are the daily experience of infertility specialists. In voices equally authoritative and intimate, psychotherapists and other health professionals explore the therapeutic process with patients and couples struggling with miscarriage, infertility, childlessness, the possibility of adoption, and the promise of assisted pregnancy. Among the themes that recur throughout this collection are the following: When is a patient's bitterness, anger, and psychopathology extreme enough to disqualify her as a candidate for infertility treatment? the well-being of offspring resulting from an assisted pregnancy? How does the clinician's personal diagnosis of infertility influence an ongoing psychodynamic treatment? How can a therapist help patients overcome the overwhelming grief of miscarriage? And the contributors are equally attentive to the range of issues that challenge physicians and nurses active in reproductive medicine. Intent on providing practical information that will aid decision-making in this demanding area of practice, they examine questions such as: How reproductive medicine programs should handle difficult patients who present with a sense of entitlement. How staff differences within reproductive medicine programs can be constructively addressed and resolved. Why physicians, nurses, and other program personnel experience burnout and what can be done to prevent it. Written for a large audience of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, researchers, nurses, physicians, and general readers, Frozen Dreams is a fascinating introduction to the human face of reproductive medicine. mental health professionals who work with adult patients through their childbearing years. For professionals who work inside the complex world of infertility treatment, Frozen Dreams will quickly become an essential text that is turned to repeatedly for information, guidance, reassurance, and revitalization.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies - Quality and Safety (Paperback): Jan Gerris, Petra de Sutter, Francois Olivennes Assisted Reproductive Technologies - Quality and Safety (Paperback)
Jan Gerris, Petra de Sutter, Francois Olivennes
R1,960 R1,758 Discovery Miles 17 580 Save R202 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Worldwide, approximately 500,000 in vitro fertilization cycles are performed every year. Although the best possible result is a healthy child, the technology carries a number of varying risks and complications leading to a trade-off between the efficacy of these treatments and their quality and safety. Drawing on contributions from international experts with academic and clinical backgrounds, Assisted Reproductive Technologies: Quality and Safety presents an analysis of the medical risks and complications involved in reproductive medicine. Putting the intricacies of reproductive health in the spotlight, the book describes side-effects, risks, and complications related to ART treatments. It discusses ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, demonstrates the impact of judicious elective single embryo transfer, and focuses heavily on multiple pregnancy as the major risk factor of ART. The editors highlight the relatively less likely, but important risks of oncogenic complications, bleeding at the time of ovum retrieval, and the even smaller but still existing risk for maternal mortality. They include discussions of non-medical factors that can have a major impact on people's lives such as psychological, sexual, financial, moral, ethical, and philosophical dilemmas. In today's litigious climate, modern management of any clinic is all about minimizing risks and complications. Thoroughly addressing quality and safety issues in ART, this book provides succinct, up-to-date information on quality care in reproductive medicine.

Jane Haynes, Juliet Miller
R1,409 Discovery Miles 14 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is over two decades since the first test-tube baby was born. During this period a new belief that all infertile women can now have babies has become widely accepted; indeed, infertile couples may feel great pressure to seek a medical solution. However, the psychological and social effects of the changing experiences of infertility remain confusing, both for those who experience infertility and for wider society. In this book, a distinguished range of contributors, including novelist Hilary Mantel and Germaine Greer, examine the experience of infertility from both male and female perspectives, the psychological aspects of infertility diagnosis and treatment, and the often radical and unexpected effects on kinship.
Drawing from a wide range of theoretical backgrounds including Jungian, analytical, and compelling personal reflections, this book aims to unravel the implications of advancing reproductive technology for our understanding of ourselves and our families.

Bryan Woodward, Jayant Mehta
R3,669 Discovery Miles 36 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Infertility affects an estimated 50 million women worldwide and has a wide range of causes including eating disorders, smoking, chemotherapy, diseases such as STIs, as well as genetic factors and malformations. The preliminary assessment and diagnosis involves a potentially broad array of lab and imaging tests, physical examination and potentially genetic tests, after which a management plan is selected depending on the woman’s age, the cause(s) and duration of the infertility. Female Infertility: Core Principles and Clinical Management provides clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of how best to overcome infertility using the various treatment options now available. The book opens with an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system before describing the assessment and investigative tools used in primary and secondary healthcare settings. Subsequent chapters describe how to secure optimum functionality of the ovaries, the measurement of ovarian reserves, stimulation protocols and the process of oogenesis and oocyte collection. Given their potential adverse impact on the quality of oocytes and implantation, dedicated chapters focus on the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome and endometriosis. Concluding chapters address fast moving and future technologies, including the use of pluripotent stem cells for treating different medical conditions; the management of mitochondrial disease and the transplantation of cryopreserved ovaries. Highly illustrated and written by a team of international experts in the field, Female Infertility: Core Principles and Clinical Management serves as an essential resource for all clinicians, nurses and clinical scientists who specialise in reproductive medicine, gynecology, oncology, infertility and embryology.
