The debut album from Kiri Ra! is an intuitive journey through landscapes of spectral otherness with colours of post classical minimalism, ambient folk and spiritual jazz.

The Message (available June 29 via Mack Avenue Records) swells with an abundance of strength, soul and astounding musicianship. Its a vision of fusion and funk, breakbeats and bass-interpreted cello suites with a little help from friends like rapper/beatboxer Doug E. Fresh and trumpeter Mark Isham. Backed by a young versatile band and a collection of tunes written in the midst of a tumultuous tour of Europe,

Im very excited about our work on this album. I wanted to include some of my band members contributions and the result is an album that is funky, melodic, musical, contemporary and fresh with a rich multi-genre influence, Clarke commented. The guys in this band are consummate young musicians with musical spirits that are very old. The line-up he refers to is pianist Beka Gochiashivili, drummer Mike Mitchell and keyboardist Cameron Graves.

The band entered ICP Studios in Belgium and recorded an abundance of material. Clarke returned to his home in Los Angeles with the tapes and began to tinker. Once I got the raw material, I fleshed it out. My ability is to orchestrate and arrange. Im very good with taking anything and turning it into something.

Much of the material from their Paris adventure is collected on this album but the affair opens with a homegrown homage to several soulful great friends that Clarke has lost in the last few years including George Duke, Al Jarreau, Tom Petty, Leon Ndugu Chancler and Prince. Clarke slaps out a funky riff for And Ya Know Were Missing You while renowned beatboxer Doug E. Fresh lays down an intrepid beat. A rare pairing that seems instinctual upon first listen.

The Message is unmistakably a Stanley Clarke record.

Part of the 39-part Jazz Sessions music profile/performance television series, this episode focuses on the work of American jazz/blues guitarist James 'Blood' Ulmer. One of the few guitarists to have forged a style based primarily on the traditions of African-American vernacular music, Ulmer's solo guitar work is an expressive, hard-edged and resolutely original hybrid. But Ulmer is not limited to the constraints of the guitar; in this programme he also reveals himself to be a talented flautist as well as a memorable songwriter and blues vocalist.

Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba performs four selections in this live concert: 'Prologo to el Manicero Supernova', 'Improvisation 1', 'Besame Mucho' and 'Yolanda Anastasia'.

The Delft Big Band, under the musical directorship of Ian Smith, was launched in August 2008 as an initiative by the Department of Social Development, and NGO Cape Outdoor Adventure Service and Training ( COAST ). The objective of the project was to take youngsters off the gang-infested streets of Delft, one of the most violent suburbs on the Cape Flats, and give them a focus in life, in addition to enabling them to contribute to their household income. The band, consisting of 17 musicians and two vocalists, has developed into one of the most exciting big bands in South Africa, with many of the founder members now earning incomes as music teachers and professional musicians, as well as progressing to studies at the UCT College of Music.

Members of the band have undertaken two tours of Sweden, a tour of France, and performances at the Liverpool Brouhaha Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and the London Jazz Festival.

The Delft Big Band also performed at the 2015 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, one of the most prestigious festivals of its kind globally.

Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in August 1901 (yet he always claimed to be born on the 4th of July) and is probably the most famous Jazz musician of the 20th Century. He achieved fame as a trumpeter but it was his unique voice and gentlemanly manner that endeared him to the general public. His biggest selling record "Hello Dolly" was released in 1964 and topped the pop charts around the world making him the oldest person ever to have hit the top, at 63! Watch these performances of Armstrong throughout different times in his career and admire his unique talent. See him perform "Hello Dolly", among many others on this brilliant collection then sit back and listen to his distinctive voice in the collection of audio tracks.
