The aim of this book is to explore measures of mathematics knowledge, spanning K-16 grade levels. By focusing solely on mathematics content, such as knowledge of mathematical practices, knowledge of ratio and proportions, and knowledge of abstract algebra, this volume offers detailed discussions of specific instruments and tools meant for measuring student learning. Written for assessment scholars and students both in mathematics education and across educational contexts, this book presents innovative research and perspectives on quantitative measures, including their associated purpose statements and validity arguments.
This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24-31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the "balancing act" between developing students' modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book highlights professional learning and development for in-service teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is taught. Given its scope, the book will appeal to researchers and teacher educators in mathematics education, as well as pre-service teachers and school and university educators

A Volume in The Montana Mathematics Enthusiast: Monograph Series in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of MontanaInterdisciplinarity is increasingly viewed as a necessary ingredient in the training of future oriented 21st century disciplinesthat rely on both analytic and synthetic abilities across disciplines. Nearly every curricular document or vision statement ofschools and universities include a call for promoting creativity in students. Yet the construct of creativity and giftednessacross disciplines remains elusive in the sense that the prototypical examples of such work come from eminent scientists, artists and mathematicians, and little if any work has been conducted with non-eminent individuals. This monograph is anattempt to fill this gap by putting forth the view that interdisciplinarity and creativity are related constructs, and that thecultivation of domain general creativity is possible. Mathematics has historically been anchored to numerous disciplineslike theology, natural philosophy, culture and art, allowing for a flexibility of thought that is difficult to cultivate in otherdisciplines. In this monograph, the numerous chapters from Australia, U.S.A., Canada, Cyprus, Denmark and Japanprovide a compelling illustration of the intricate connection of mathematics with literature, paradoxes, history, technologyand modeling, thus serving as a conduit for interdisciplinarity, creativity and learning to occur.

Teaching mathematics is one of the most difficult and important jobs that anyone can do. Mathematics is a critical part of education and an essential building block for problem solving skills that are needed in the real world. However, many students struggle to learn and understand mathematical concepts and educators need to do everything possible to help our students learn. This book focuses on four areas necessary to be an impactful teacher of mathematics: Planning, Pedagogy, Assessment, and Relationships. For each of the ideas presented in the book, a brief introduction will be shared and then two different perspectives will be detailed with examples. The first is Not like This which is often the traditional way of teaching mathematics or the less effective approach. The second perspective is Teach Like This which is my recommended approach based upon research and my own experience as a teacher, math coordinator, and graduate instructor of math education.
Using the latest research, this book provides an insight into how learning in mathematics can be improved through a lesson study approach. This highly practical resource explores the research and theory that underpins lesson study, and shows the significant impact it can have on teacher development. Divided into ten accessible main chapters that focus in depth on an individual mathematics lesson, each chapter provides research and background to the lesson, an outline of key features, a detailed description and analysis of the lesson in practice, post-lesson discussions and reflections which generalise from the experience, as well as links to helpful resources. Some of the key topics explored include: Fractions Proportional relationships Probability and statistics Geometry Modelling Algebra Dialogic reasoning. Understanding Lesson Study for Mathematics is the perfect resource for all mathematics teachers, trainee teachers, and professional developers who are looking to develop the use of lesson study in their own practice or for those simply seeking new inspiring ideas for the mathematics classroom.
Personal story telling is a powerful and interesting medium through which one can share experiences, insights, successes, and difficulties in meaningful contexts. Teaching in general, and mathematics teaching in particular, is much more than what meets the eye. Most people have only experienced teaching from the vantage point of a student and have impressions of teachers and teaching that are simplistic and usually totally incorrect. The lives of mathematics teachers are varied and contrary to what one might think they are. The journeys of exemplary in-service teachers are not linear; there are many bends, potholes, and detours through which they have navigated. The ""road conditions"" of teaching are fodder for the 12 untold stories collected in this volume, whose authors graduated from a special four-year undergraduate mathematics teacher preparation program, containing innovative components, many of which are revealed through the experiences described in their stories. The range of narratives vary in every possible way, from the reasons they became mathematics teachers, to the number of years teaching, to the experiences encountered while teaching, to the different roles they have assumed throughout their careers. Nevertheless, one strand permeates all of the stories: their passion for what they do and their ability to reflect on early college experiences that contribute to their performance. These inspiring narratives will shed light on the developmental processes of mathematics teachers, what it means to teach mathematics, and the components of a secondary mathematics teacher preparation program that can contribute to their expertise.

In this engaging text, Michael Weiss offers an advanced view of the secondary mathematics curriculum through the prism of theory, analysis, and history, aiming to take an intellectually and mathematically mature perspective on the content normally taught in high school mathematics courses. Rather than a secondary mathematics textbook, Weiss presents here a textbook about the secondary mathematics curriculum, written for mathematics educators and mathematicians and presenting a long-overdue modern-day integration of the disparate topics and methods of secondary mathematics into a coherent mathematical theory. Areas covered include: Polynomials and polynomial functions; Geometry, graphs, and symmetry; Abstract algebra, linear algebra, and solving equations; Exponential and logarithmic functions; Complex numbers; The historical development of the secondary mathematics curriculum. Written using precise definitions and proofs throughout on a foundation of advanced content knowledge, Weiss offers a compelling and timely investigation into the secondary mathematics curriculum, relevant for preservice secondary teachers as well as graduate students and scholars in both mathematics and mathematics education. |
