How Math Works - A Guide to Grade School Arithmetic for Parents and Teachers (Hardcover): G. Arnell Williams How Math Works - A Guide to Grade School Arithmetic for Parents and Teachers (Hardcover)
G. Arnell Williams
R1,959 Discovery Miles 19 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

We hear all the time how American children are falling behind their global peers in various basic subjects, but particularly in math. Is it our fear of math that constrains us? Or our inability to understand math's place in relation to our everyday lives? How can we help our children better understand the basics of arithmetic if we're not really sure we understand them ourselves? Here, G. Arnell Williams helps parents and teachers explore the world of math that their elementary school children are learning. Taking readers on a tour of the history of arithmetic, and its growth into the subject we know it to be today, Williams explores the beauty and relevance of mathematics by focusing on the great conceptual depth and genius already inherent in the elementary mathematics familiar to us all, and by connecting it to other well-known areas such as language and the conceptual aspects of everyday life. The result is a book that will help you to better explain mathematics to your children. For those already well versed in these areas, the book offers a tour of the great conceptual and historical facts and assumptions that most simply take for granted. If you are someone who has always struggled with mathematics either because you couldn't do it or because you never really understood why the rules are the way they are, if you were irritated with the way it was taught to you with the emphasis being only on learning the rules and "recipes" by rote as opposed to obtaining a good conceptual understanding, then How Math Works is for you!

Handbook of Research on STEM Education (Hardcover): Carla C. Johnson, Margaret J. Mohr-Schroeder, Tamara J Moore, Lyn D English Handbook of Research on STEM Education (Hardcover)
Carla C. Johnson, Margaret J. Mohr-Schroeder, Tamara J Moore, Lyn D English
R8,204 Discovery Miles 82 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Handbook of Research on STEM Education represents a groundbreaking and comprehensive synthesis of research and presentation of policy within the realm of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. What distinguishes this Handbook from others is the nature of integration of the disciplines that is the founding premise for the work - all chapters in this book speak directly to the integration of STEM, rather than discussion of research within the individual content areas. The Handbook of Research on STEM Education explores the most pressing areas of STEM within an international context. Divided into six sections, the authors cover topics including: the nature of STEM, STEM learning, STEM pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, critical issues in STEM, STEM teacher education, and STEM policy and reform. The Handbook utilizes the lens of equity and access by focusing on STEM literacy, early childhood STEM, learners with disabilities, informal STEM, socio-scientific issues, race-related factors, gender equity, cultural-relevancy, and parental involvement. Additionally, discussion of STEM education policy in a variety of countries is included, as well as a focus on engaging business/industry and teachers in advocacy for STEM education. The Handbook's 37 chapters provide a deep and meaningful landscape of the implementation of STEM over the past two decades. As such, the findings that are presented within provide the reader with clear directions for future research into effective practice and supports for integrated STEM, which are grounded in the literature to date.

R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

For "Heinemann Mathematics P7", colour textbooks and workbooks are used by children to practise and record their understanding of concepts, skills and applications in number, measure, shape and handling data. They include a wide range of problem-solving and investigative work to develop children's ability to use and apply maths. The textbooks help promote children's recording skills using a variety of motivating contexts, and include activities to give further practice in applying maths. The format of the workbooks free children to concentrate on the maths rather than on the presentation of their work, and each one contains a record-keeping grid to show work completed. The reinforcement sheets are for use selectively with those children who need extra practice of key maths topics, in addition to that provided in the textbooks and workbooks. Each sheet is clearly referenced to a workbook or textbook page for easier integration with the core work, and clear flagging in the textbooks and workbooks shows which topics are supported by a reinforcement sheet. All the extra work is at the same mathematical level as the core. The extension textbook provides additional work at every stage to consolidate and extend learning. Some of the work extends the range of a topic for all children, and some is specifically to stretch the more able. Some of the activities relate to topics in the textbooks and workbooks, and the remaining ones can be attempted at any time. The assessment and resources packs contain games and activities to enrich learning. These include photocopiable problem-solving activities and calculator work, and ideas for practical, theme-based work covering a range of maths topics. This is the textbook.

STEM Education in Primary Classrooms - Unravelling Contemporary Approaches in Australia and New Zealand (Hardcover): Angela... STEM Education in Primary Classrooms - Unravelling Contemporary Approaches in Australia and New Zealand (Hardcover)
Angela Fitzgerald, Carole Haeusler, Linda Pfeiffer
R4,492 Discovery Miles 44 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

If you were to peer into a primary school classroom somewhere across Australia and New Zealand, you would be forgiven for thinking that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is synonymous with coding and digital technologies. However, while these aspects are important, technology alone does not reflect the broad learning opportunities afforded by STEM. In countering this narrow approach, STEM Education in Primary Classrooms offers a platform for research that innovates, excites and challenges the status quo. It provides educators with innovative and up-to-date research into how to meaningfully and authentically embed STEM into existing classroom practices. It incorporates accurate explanations of STEM as an integrated approach to solving real-world problems, including social issues, along with case studies and stories to bring practice to life in evidence-informed ways. This book showcases the impact of a broader approach to STEM in the primary classroom through Australian-based and New Zealand-based research that will challenge current teaching practices. Thus, this book will be of interest to pre- and in-service primary school teachers, along with researchers and postgraduate students in the STEM education field.

Manufacturing the Mathematical Child - A Deconstruction of Dominant Spaces of Production and Governance (Paperback): Anna... Manufacturing the Mathematical Child - A Deconstruction of Dominant Spaces of Production and Governance (Paperback)
Anna Llewellyn
R1,372 Discovery Miles 13 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mathematics is a subject held in high esteem around the world, yet the teaching and learning of mathematics is rarely viewed as good enough and many find the subject difficult to comprehend, or engage with. In Manufacturing the Mathematical Child, Anna Llewellyn asks some difficult questions in order to determine why this is the case and to question who it is that we allow to succeed at mathematics, particularly within the context of neoliberalism, where education is a product of the market. By looking at the various sites of production, Llewellyn examines the ways that key discursive spaces produce very different expectations of what it means to do mathematics and demonstrates that these place various homogenised expectations upon children. Arguing that these are not natural, but instead a reproduction of discursive norms, the book demonstrates why some people fit these standardized ways of being and others do not. Using England as a case study and referring to other international contexts, Llewellyn argues that there is a functionality found within certain educational policy discourses, and a romantic attachment to the natural child found within educational research, neither of which can match what happens in the messy classroom. As a result, it becomes evident that exclusion from mathematics is inevitable for many children. Original and exciting, this book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students within the fields of mathematics education, childhood studies, policy studies, and Foucauldian or post-structural analysis.

Teachers Engaged in Research - Inquiry in Mathematics Classrooms, Grades 9-12 (Hardcover, New): Laura R Van Zoest Teachers Engaged in Research - Inquiry in Mathematics Classrooms, Grades 9-12 (Hardcover, New)
Laura R Van Zoest; Series edited by Denise S. Mewborn
R2,811 Discovery Miles 28 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides examples of the ways in which 9-12 grade mathematics teachers from across North America are engaging in research. It offers a glimpse of the questions that capture the attention of teachers, the methodologies that they use to gather data, and the ways in which they make sense of what they find. The focus of these teachers' investigations into mathematics classrooms ranges from students' understanding of content to pedagogical changes to social issues. Underlying the chapters is the common goal of enabling students to develop a deep understanding of the mathematics they learn in their classrooms. By opening their analysis of their classroom practice to our inspection, these courageous teachers have invited us to think along with them and to learn more about our own teaching as a result. By sharing their work, they have given the mathematics education community an important opportunity. Everyone who reads this book-teachers, researchers, teacher-researchers, policy makers, administrators, and others interested in mathematics education-can learn from the findings and the light that they shed on issues important to mathematics education. This book, and the series of which it is a part, also provides the opportunity to step back and reflect on what can be learned about research from teachers who have engaged in the process. Areas of insight include: (a) the importance of collaboration and participation in communities that value research, (b) the potential of teacher research as a way to warrant teacher practice, (c) the power of video and other artifacts of teaching to support classroom inquiry, (d) connections between teaching and research, and (e) the publication process as professional development.

Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics - Teachers' Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics in China and the United... Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics - Teachers' Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics in China and the United States (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Liping Ma
R4,208 Discovery Miles 42 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 20th anniversary edition of this groundbreaking and bestselling volume offers powerful examples of the mathematics that can develop the thinking of elementary school children. Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts. Along with the original studies of U.S. and Chinese teachers' mathematical understanding, this 20th anniversary edition includes a new preface and a 2013 journal article by Ma, "A Critique of the Structure of U.S. Elementary School Mathematics" that describe differences in U.S. and Chinese elementary mathematics. These are augmented by a new series editor's introduction and two key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.
