During the past few years, groups like the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Center for Education have been placing great emphasis on the significance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. In brief, the US is seen as falling behind the rest of the world in science and technology education. In response, the curricula have been revised in many educational institutions and school districts across the country. It is clear that for STEM to be successful, other community organizations, most particularly libraries, need to be closely involved in the process. Library staff realize the importance of getting involved in STEM education, but many have difficulty finding comprehensive information that will help them plan and successfully implement STEM direction in their organization. This book is designed to meet that need. It is timely and relevant. How to STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education in Libraries is by and for libraries who are involved in contributing efforts into advancing these subjects. It is organized in 9 parts including funding, grant writing, community partnerships, outreach, research, and examples of specific programming activities. Authors are drawn from the professional staffs of educational institutions, libraries, and non-profit organizations such as science museums. The book contains eight parts, each emphasizing a different aspect of how to succeed with STEM. Part 1 emphasizes how hands-on activities that are both fun and educational can be used to further STEM awareness. Parts 2 and 3 contain chapters on the uniting of STEM with Information Literacy. Innovative collection development ideas are discussed in Part 4 and Part 5 focuses on research and publishing. Outreach is the theme of Part 6 and the programs described in these chapters offer an array of ways to connect with students of all ages. The final section of How to STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education in Libraries addresses the funding of these programs. Librarians of all types will be pleased to discover easy-to-implement suggestions for collaborative efforts, many rich and diverse programming ideas, strategies for improving reference services and library instruction to speakers of English as a second language, marketing and promotional tips designed to welcome multicultural patrons into the library, and much more.
The Heinemann Mathematics scheme has been developed by the authors of the primary course SPMG, with the aim of building on established strengths to provide a structured development of children's mathematical knowledge and skills within the revised curricula.
"Scottish Heinemann Maths" offers flexible and easy-to-manage ways to plan lessons and a programme of work that reflects the key recommendations of the HMI report "Improving Mathematics Education 5-14". The "Organising and Planning Guide" gives the rationale and ethos of SHM, linking the component parts and advising on planning. A customisable CD at each stage gives 5-14 levelled planning and a weekly planning template. The "Teaching File" provides easy to follow instructions for each lesson. Lessons begin with lively mental activities, followed by a broad range of interactive teaching activities. Structured pupil activities consolidate, reinforce and extend topics, and there are clear suggestions for follow-ups to the main points of the lesson. The progression through each topic is carefully structured to provide a balance of oral and practical work. SHM has pupil resources that are clear, fun and easy to use. Activity books are used for SHM1-4, textbooks and extension textbooks for SHM3-7. A flexible strategy helps teachers monitor pupil progress and inform lesson planning. It offers a three-strand approach to assessment - ongoing (at the end of small blocks of work), assessment for specific topics and longer-term, end-of-level assessment. SHM has been purposefully written to help children achieve a higher standard of attainment. It provides a fast pace of learning and uses a direct, interactive method of teaching, placing considerable emphasis on oral and mental mathematics.

Tasks in Primary Mathematics Teacher Education is intended to advance relevant research and innovative international practices in the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers. Emerging from discussion at the ICMI study on teacher professional development, this volume, focused on primary and elementary teachers, culls a richness that can only be found by gathering wisdom from varied experiences around the world. The choice of tasks, and the associated pedagogies, is a key aspect of teaching and learning mathematics. Arguing that what students learn is largely defined by the tasks they are given, several major themes are presented. One such major strand, the form, function and focus of tasks, is discussed throughout several chapters, offering analysis, discussion of implementation, and exemplars of a broader category of illustrative techniques for developing critical understanding.

Testing matters It can determine kids' and schools' futures. In a conference at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, mathematicians, maths education researchers, teachers, test developers, and policymakers gathered to work through critical issues related to mathematics assessment. They examined: * The challenges of assessing student learning in ways that support instructional improvement; * Ethical issues related to assessment, including the impact of testing on urban and high-poverty schools; * The different (and sometimes conflicting) needs of the different groups; and * Different frameworks, tools, and methods for assessment, comparing the kinds of information they offer about students' mathematical proficiency. This volume presents the results of the discussions. It highlights the kinds of information that different assessments can offer, including many examples of some of the best mathematics assessments worldwide. A special feature is an interview with a student about his knowledge of fractions and a demonstration of what interviews (versus standardized tests) can reveal.

For "Heinemann Mathematics P7", colour textbooks and workbooks are used by children to practise and record their understanding of concepts, skills and applications in number, measure, shape and handling data. They include a wide range of problem-solving and investigative work to develop children's ability to use and apply maths. The textbooks help promote children's recording skills using a variety of motivating contexts, and include activities to give further practice in applying maths. The format of the workbooks free children to concentrate on the maths rather than on the presentation of their work, and each one contains a record-keeping grid to show work completed. The reinforcement sheets are for use selectively with those children who need extra practice of key maths topics, in addition to that provided in the textbooks and workbooks. Each sheet is clearly referenced to a workbook or textbook page for easier integration with the core work, and clear flagging in the textbooks and workbooks shows which topics are supported by a reinforcement sheet. All the extra work is at the same mathematical level as the core. The extension textbook provides additional work at every stage to consolidate and extend learning. Some of the work extends the range of a topic for all children, and some is specifically to stretch the more able. Some of the activities relate to topics in the textbooks and workbooks, and the remaining ones can be attempted at any time. The assessment and resources packs contain games and activities to enrich learning. These include photocopiable problem-solving activities and calculator work, and ideas for practical, theme-based work covering a range of maths topics. This is the textbook.

Written Calculation comprises six Pupil Books, six Answer Books, a Teacher's Guide and a Teacher's Resource Book and uses methods recommended in the National Curriculum. Designed for use at Key Stage 2, each Pupil Book uses 18 carefully structured steps to guide the learner towards full mastery of each written method, supporting them in their national tests and other areas of the National Curriculum. Written Calculation also helps pupils develop confidence and fluency in their learning by practising and embedding place value, number facts and problem solving skills. The importance of estimating and checking answers is also emphasised. Written Calculation: Division 1 leads pupils through the necessary steps for mastering shortdivision. Pupils beginning this book should have an understanding of the value of digits in two- and three-digit numbers and experience of multiplying and dividing small numbers. Pupils who have learnt their times tables and related division facts will find written division easier. Each of the 18 steps features the following sections: What to do - detailed explanations and a worked example; Now you try - questions that are similar to those in the worked example; More practice - questions that are a little more difficult and provide less support than those in Now you try; Problem solving - word problems; Self-evaluation rating - to help identify pupils who may be struggling with the step. Three Check-up tests and a Final test enable you to monitor pupils' progress and quickly convert scores to percentages. These scores may later be recorded on the Group record sheet. The accompanying Teacher's Guide provides useful notes and ideas for planning lessons, enabling a whole-school approach. Detailed Teaching notes outline clear learning objectives and a summary of the steps for each Pupil Book is included. Photocopiable Assessment resources allow you to monitor and assess pupils' progress. Supplementary Further practice and Problem solving questions can be found in the Teacher's Resource Book. These photocopiable resources may be used for further practice, assessment, revision or homework and correspond to the steps covered in each of the Pupil Books.
Algebra is the language that must be mastered for any course that uses math because it is the gateway for entry into any science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) discipline. Math Remediation for the College Bound fosters mastery of critical math and algebraic concepts and skills essential to all of the STEM disciplines and some of the social sciences. This booklet is designed to accompany the main book, Math Remediation for the College-Bound: How Teachers Can Close the Gap, from the Basics through Algebra. With the exception of Chapters 1 and 2, each chapter of the booklet consists of five sections: (1) practice homework, (2) a sample test, (3) the answers to selected and numbered exercises corresponding to their numbering in the book, (4) answers to the practice homework, and (5) answers to sample tests. This pattern begins with Chapter 3 and continues for the remainder of the book.
