Tom Hooper directs this Academy Award-winning big-screen adaptation of the stage musical based on Victor Hugo's classic novel. Set in 19th-century France, the film tells the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a prisoner who breaks his parole and spends the next two decades fleeing from obsessive police inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). In his quest for personal redemption, Valjean adopts Cosette (Isabelle Allen/Amanda Seyfried), daughter of impoverished prostitute Fantine (Anne Hathaway), and is eventually elected as town mayor. But despite the events of the intervening years, can he ever really shake off his past? The ensemble supporting cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks. Hathaway won the Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for her supporting performance. The film also won two additional Oscars and three BAFTAs, and received Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy and Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical Or Comedy (Jackman).

A double bill of films detailing the life of musical comedienne Fanny Brice. In 'Funny Girl', Fanny (Barbra Streisand) is an aspiring star living in New York in the early 1900s. She has the chance to realize her ambition when she meets playboy Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), who introduces her to Florenz Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon). When Ziegfeld puts Fanny in his Follies, she becomes an instant hit. However, marriage to Nick is not a bed of roses. In the sequel, 'Funny Lady', it is the 1930s, and Fanny is now over Nick. She is due to wed impresario Billy Rose (James Caan), but the union proves to be a tempestuous one. Although Billy provides Fanny with several hit songs, she soon tires of his womanising.

The 'Legato' series of classical concert films rests on the thesis that a new generation of pianists are spearheading the re-popularization of the instrument with a unique and quintessentially 21st Century series of performances and interpretations. The series profiles these pianists one by one, showcasing their performances. This particular volume highlights the work of Swedish-born pianist Roland Pötinen, with his interpretations of nine key works from the classical canon. Selections include: François Couperin's Les Baricades mistérieuses, Jean-Philippe Rameau's Gavotte in A minor with Six Doubles, Maurice Ravel's Miroirs: Oiseaux tristes, and many more. The concert at hand was filmed live at the Ruhr Piano Festival on July 2, 2007.
