The People's Web Meets NLP - Collaboratively Constructed Language Resources (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Iryna Gurevych, Jungi... The People's Web Meets NLP - Collaboratively Constructed Language Resources (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Iryna Gurevych, Jungi Kim; Foreword by Nicoletta Calzolari
R4,404 Discovery Miles 44 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Collaboratively Constructed Language Resources (CCLRs) such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Linked Open Data, and various resources developed using crowdsourcing techniques such as Games with a Purpose and Mechanical Turk have substantially contributed to the research in natural language processing (NLP). Various NLP tasks utilize such resources to substitute for or supplement conventional lexical semantic resources and linguistically annotated corpora. These resources also provide an extensive body of texts from which valuable knowledge is mined. There are an increasing number of community efforts to link and maintain multiple linguistic resources.
This book aims offers comprehensive coverage of CCLR-related topics, including their construction, utilization in NLP tasks, and interlinkage and management.Various Bachelor/Master/Ph.D. programs in natural language processing, computational linguistics, and knowledge discovery can use this book both as the main text and as a supplementary reading. The bookalso provides a valuable reference guide for researchers and professionalsforthe above topics."

Understanding Language - Man or Machine (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1985): John A Moyne Understanding Language - Man or Machine (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1985)
John A Moyne
R1,577 Discovery Miles 15 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook is intended for graduate students in computer science and linguistics who are interested in developing expertise in natural language processing (NLP) and in those aspects of artificial intelligence which are concerned with computer models oflanguage comprehension. The text is somewhat different from a number of other excellent textbooks in that its foci are more on the linguistic and psycho linguistic prerequisites and on foundational issues concerning human linguistic behavior than on the description of the extant models and algorithms. The goal is to make the student, undertaking the enormous task of developing computer models for NLP, well aware of the major diffi culties and unsolved problems, so that he or she will not begin the task (as it has often been done) with overoptimistic hopes or claims about the generalizability of models, when such hopes and claims are incon sistent either with some aspects of the formal theory or with known facts about human cognitive behavior. Thus, I try to enumerate and explain the variety of cognitive, linguistic, and pragmatic data which must be understood and formalized before they can be incorporated into a computer model."

Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): Demetres... Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
Demetres D. Kouvatsos
R5,815 Discovery Miles 58 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Information Storage and Retrieval Systems - Theory and Implementation (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2002): Gerald J. Kowalski, Mark T... Information Storage and Retrieval Systems - Theory and Implementation (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2002)
Gerald J. Kowalski, Mark T Maybury
R9,845 Discovery Miles 98 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a theoretical and practical explanation of the latest advancements in information retrieval and their application to existing systems. It takes a system approach, discussing all aspects of an Information Retrieval System. The major difference between this book and the first edition is the addition to this text of descriptions of the automated indexing of multimedia documents, as items in information retrieval are now considered to be a combination of text along with graphics, audio, image and video data types. The growth of the Internet and the availability of enormous volumes of data in digital form have necessitated intense interest in techniques to assist the user in locating data. The importance of the Internet and its associated hypertext linked structure are put into perspective as a new type of information retrieval data structure. The total system approach also includes discussion of the human interface and the importance of information visualization for identification of relevant information. With the availability of large quantities of multi-media on the Internet (audio, video, images), Information Retrieval Systems need to address multi-modal retrieval. The primary use of this book is as a college text on Information Retrieval Systems. But in addition to the theoretical aspects, the book maintains a theme of practicality that puts into perspective the importance and utilization of the theory in systems that are being used by anyone on the Internet. The student will gain an understanding of what is achievable using existing technologies and deficient areas that warrant additional research. The text provides coverage of all of the major aspects of information retrieval and has sufficient detail to allow students to implement a simple Information Retrieval System.

Dafydd Gibbon, Inge Mertins, Roger K. Moore
R5,837 Discovery Miles 58 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dictation systems, read-aloud software for the blind, speech control of machinery, geographical information systems with speech input and output, and educational software with 'talking head' artificial tutorial agents are already on the market. The field is expanding rapidly, and new methods and applications emerge almost daily. But good sources of systematic information have not kept pace with the body of information needed for development and evaluation of these systems. Much of this information is widely scattered through speech and acoustic engineering, linguistics, phonetics, and experimental psychology. The Handbook of Multimodal and Spoken Dialogue Systems presents current and developing best practice in resource creation for speech input/output software and hardware. This volume brings experts in these fields together to give detailed 'how to' information and recommendations on planning spoken dialogue systems, designing and evaluating audiovisual and multimodal systems, and evaluating consumer off-the-shelf products. In addition to standard terminology in the field, the following topics are covered in depth: * How to collect high quality data for designing, training, and evaluating multimodal and speech dialogue systems; * How to evaluate real-life computer systems with speech input and output; * How to describe and model human-computer dialogue precisely and in depth. Also included: * The first systematic medium-scale compendium of terminology with definitions. This handbook has been especially designed for the needs of development engineers, decision-makers, researchers, and advanced level students in the fields of speech technology, multimodal interfaces, multimedia, computational linguistics, and phonetics.

The SGML FAQ Book - Understanding the Foundation of HTML and XML (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997):... The SGML FAQ Book - Understanding the Foundation of HTML and XML (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
S. J. DeRose
R2,953 Discovery Miles 29 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The SGML FAQ Book: Understanding the Foundation of HTML and XML is similar, but not quite the same kind of thing as an online FAQ or 'Frequently Asked Questions' list. It addresses questions from people who already actually use SGML in some way (including HTML authors), and people who are about to use it. It deals mainly with issues that arise when using SGML in practice. A very brief introduction to SGML is included as Appendix A. The questions discussed in The SGML FAQ Book are repeatedly heard by people who make their living serving the SGML community. SGML experts spend many hours teaching these details, sometimes repeatedly because some questions do not seem important - until you run into them. So one benefit of this book is learning more of the art of document creation and management, both by general reading before questions arise and by specific reference when a question arises. For the latter use, the appendices, glossary, and index are particularly important. A second benefit of this book is that it provides a common theme to its answers that you can apply in your use of SGML, HTML and related languages in general. The fundamental answer to many of the questions boils down to 'simplify': many questions do not show up if you use the simple, elegant core of SGML without worrying about optional features. The credo of this book is simply, 'SGML doesn't need to be complicated'. SGML has the potential for complexity at certain points. But much of the complexity comes from optional parts and can be avoided. SGML methodology and its primary benefits suffer no loss even if you skip many features, which speaks well for the quality of SGML's overall design. Many of the questions discussed involve those optional parts, and therefore can be avoided by judicious designers and authors. The two key goals of the book are (1) to answer questions that you may actually encounter as an SGML user, and to help you get 'unstuck' and be as productive as possible in using the language and (2) to show proactive ways you can simplify your use of SGML, and get its very substantial benefits with minimal complexity.

Natural Language Processing: The PLNLP Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): Karen Jensen,... Natural Language Processing: The PLNLP Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
Karen Jensen, George E. Heidorn, Stephen D. Richardson
R1,588 Discovery Miles 15 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Natural language is easy for people and hard for machines. For two generations, the tantalizing goal has been to get computers to handle human languages in ways that will be compelling and useful to people. Obstacles are many and legendary. Natural Language Processing: The PLNLP Approach describes one group's decade of research in pursuit of that goal. A very broad coverage NLP system, including a programming language (PLNLP) development tools, and analysis and synthesis components, was developed and incorporated into a variety of well-known practical applications, ranging from text critiquing (CRITIQUE) to machine translation (e.g. SHALT). This books represents the first published collection of papers describing the system and how it has been used. Twenty-six authors from nine countries contributed to this volume. Natural language analysis, in the PLNLP approach, is done is six stages that move smoothly from syntax through semantics into discourse. The initial syntactic sketch is provided by an Augmented Phrase Structure Grammar (APSG) that uses exclusively binary rules and aims to produce some reasonable analysis for any input string. Its `approximate' analysis passes to the reassignment component, which takes the default syntactic attachments and adjusts them, using semantic information obtained by parsing definitions and example sentences from machine-readable dictionaries. This technique is an example of one facet of the PLNLP approach: the use of natural language itself as a knowledge representation language -- an innovation that permits a wide variety of online text materials to be exploited as sources of semantic information. The next stage computes the intrasential argument structure and resolves all references, both NP- and VP-anaphora, that can be treated at this point in the processing. Subsequently, additional components, currently not so well developed as the earlier ones, handle the further disambiguation of word senses, the normalization of paraphrases, and the construction of a paragraph (discourse) model by joining sentential semantic graphs. Natural Language Processing: The PLNLP Approach acquaints the reader with the theory and application of a working, real-world, domain-free NLP system, and attempts to bridge the gap between computational and theoretical models of linguistic structure. It provides a valuable resource for students, teachers, and researchers in the areas of computational linguistics, natural processing, artificial intelligence, and information science.

Semantic Agent Systems - Foundations and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Atilla Elci, Mamadou Tadiou Kone, Mehmet A. Orgun Semantic Agent Systems - Foundations and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Atilla Elci, Mamadou Tadiou Kone, Mehmet A. Orgun
R4,497 Discovery Miles 44 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Semantic agent systems are about the integration of the semantic Web, software agents, and multi-agent systems technologies. Like in the past (e.g. biology and informatics yielding bioinformatics) a whole new perspective is emerging with semantic agent systems. In this context, the semantic Web is a Web of semantically linked data which aims to enable man and machine to execute tasks in tandem. Here, software agents in a multi-agent system as delegates of humans are endowed with power to use semantically linked data. This edited book "Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications" proposes contributions on a wide range of topics on foundations and applications written by a selection of international experts. It first introduces in an accessible style the nature of semantic agent systems. Then it explores with numerous illustrations new frontiers in software agent technology. "Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications" is recommended for scientists, experts, researchers, and learners in the field of artificial intelligence, the semantic Web, software agents, and multi-agent systems technologies.

Aline Villavicencio, Thierry Poibeau, Anna Korhonen, Afra Alishahi
R2,791 Discovery Miles 27 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Questions related to language acquisition have been of interest for many centuries, as children seem to acquire a sophisticated capacity for processing language with apparent ease, in the face of ambiguity, noise and uncertainty. However, with recent advances in technology and cognitive-related research it is now possible to conduct large-scale computational investigations of these issues

The book discusses some of the latest theoretical and practical developments in the areas involved, including computational models for language tasks, tools and resources that help to approximate the linguistic environment available to children during acquisition, and discussions of challenging aspects of language that children have to master.

This is a much-needed collection that provides a cross-section of recent multidisciplinary research on the computational modeling of language acquisition. It is targeted at anyone interested in the relevance of computational techniques for understanding language acquisition. Readers of this book will be introduced to some of the latest approaches to these tasks including:

* Models of acquisition of various types of linguistic information (from words to syntax and semantics) and their relevance to research on human language acquisition

* Analysis of linguistic and contextual factors that influence acquisition

* Resources and tools for investigating these tasks

Each chapter is presented in a self-contained manner, providing a detailed description of the relevant aspects related to research on language acquisition, and includes illustrations and tables to complement these in-depth discussions. Though there are no formal prerequisites, some familiarity with the basic concepts of human and computational language acquisition is beneficial.

Computational Modeling of Narrative (Paperback): Inderjeet Mani Computational Modeling of Narrative (Paperback)
Inderjeet Mani
R1,088 Discovery Miles 10 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The field of narrative (or story) understanding and generation is one of the oldest in natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI), which is hardly surprising, since storytelling is such a fundamental and familiar intellectual and social activity. In recent years, the demands of interactive entertainment and interest in the creation of engaging narratives with life-like characters have provided a fresh impetus to this field. This book provides an overview of the principal problems, approaches, and challenges faced today in modeling the narrative structure of stories. The book introduces classical narratological concepts from literary theory and their mapping to computational approaches. It demonstrates how research in AI and NLP has modeled character goals, causality, and time using formalisms from planning, case-based reasoning, and temporal reasoning, and discusses fundamental limitations in such approaches. It proposes new representations for embedded narratives and fictional entities, for assessing the pace of a narrative, and offers an empirical theory of audience response. These notions are incorporated into an annotation scheme called NarrativeML. The book identifies key issues that need to be addressed, including annotation methods for long literary narratives, the representation of modality and habituality, and characterizing the goals of narrators. It also suggests a future characterized by advanced text mining of narrative structure from large-scale corpora and the development of a variety of useful authoring aids. This is the first book to provide a systematic foundation that integrates together narratology, AI, and computational linguistics. It can serve as a narratology primer for computer scientists and an elucidation of computational narratology for literary theorists. It is written in a highly accessible manner and is intended for use by a broad scientific audience that includes linguists (computational and formal semanticists), AI researchers, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, game developers, and narrative theorists. Contextual Computing - Models and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Robert Porzel Contextual Computing - Models and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Robert Porzel
R2,925 Discovery Miles 29 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent advances in the fields of knowledge representation, reasoning and human-computer interaction have paved the way for a novel approach to treating and handling context. The field of research presented in this book addresses the problem of contextual computing in artificial intelligence based on the state of the art in knowledge representation and human-computer interaction. The author puts forward a knowledge-based approach for employing high-level context in order to solve some persistent and challenging problems in the chosen showcase domain of natural language understanding. Specifically, the problems addressed concern the handling of noise due to speech recognition errors, semantic ambiguities, and the notorious problem of underspecification. Consequently the book examines the individual contributions of contextual composing for different types of context. Therefore, contextual information stemming from the domain at hand, prior discourse, and the specific user and real world situation are considered and integrated in a formal model that is applied and evaluated employing different multimodal mobile dialog systems. This book is intended to meet the needs of readers from at least three fields - AI and computer science; computational linguistics; and natural language processing - as well as some computationally oriented linguists, making it a valuable resource for scientists, researchers, lecturers, language processing practitioners and professionals as well as postgraduates and some undergraduates in the aforementioned fields. "The book addresses a problem of great and increasing technical and practical importance - the role of context in natural language processing (NLP). It considers the role of context in three important tasks: Automatic Speech Recognition, Semantic Interpretation, and Pragmatic Interpretation. Overall, the book represents a novel and insightful investigation into the potential of contextual information processing in NLP." James Pustejovsky, Pierrette Bouillon, Hitoshi Isahara, Kyoko Kanzaki, Chung Min Lee
R6,220 Discovery Miles 62 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of papers takes linguists to the leading edge of techniques in generative lexicon theory, the linguistic composition methodology that arose from the imperative to provide a compositional semantics for the contextual modifications in meaning that emerge in real linguistic usage. Today's growing shift towards distributed compositional analyses evinces the applicability of GL theory, and the contributions to this volume, presented at three international workshops (GL-2003, GL-2005 and GL-2007) address the relationship between compositionality in language and the mechanisms of selection in grammar that are necessary to maintain this property. The core unresolved issues in compositionality, relating to the interpretation of context and the mechanisms of selection, are treated from varying perspectives within GL theory, including its basic theoretical mechanisms and its analytical viewpoint on linguistic phenomena.

This volume is a collection of contributions from leading researchers in the field of natural language processing technology, each of whom detail their recent work which includes new techniques as well as results. The book presents an overview of the state of the art in current research into parsing technologies, focusing on three important themes: dependency parsing, domain adaptation, and deep parsing. The technology, which has a variety of practical uses, is especially concerned with the methods, tools and software that can be used to parse automatically. Applications include extracting information from free text or speech, question answering, speech recognition and comprehension, recommender systems, machine translation, and automatic summarization. New developments in the area of parsing technology are thus widely applicable, and researchers and professionals from a number of fields will find the material here required reading. As well as the other four volumes on parsing technology in this series this book has a breadth of coverage that makes it suitable both as an overview of the field for graduate students, and as a reference for established researchers in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, computer science, language engineering, information science, and cognitive science. It will also be of interest to designers, developers, and advanced users of natural language processing systems, including applications such as spoken dialogue, text mining, multimodal human-computer interaction, and semantic web technology.

The description, automatic identification and further processing of web genres is a novel field of research in computational linguistics, NLP and related areas such as text-technology, digital humanities and web mining. One of the driving forces behind this research is the idea of genre-enabled search engines which enable users to additionally specify web genres that the documents to be retrieved should comply with (e.g., personal homepage, weblog, scientific article etc.). This book offers a thorough foundation of this upcoming field of research on web genres and document types in web-based social networking. It provides theoretical foundations of web genres, presents corpus linguistic approaches to their analysis and computational models for their classification. This includes research in the areas of web genre identification, web genre modelling and related fields such as genres and registers in web based communication social software-based document networks web genre ontologies and classification schemes text-technological models of web genres web content, structure and usage mining web genre classification web as corpus. The book addresses researchers who want to become acquainted with theoretical developments, computational models and their empirical evaluation in this field of research. It also addresses researchers who are interested in standards for the creation of corpora of web documents. Thus, the book concerns readers from many disciplines such as corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, text-technology and computer science.
