Batik occupies a special place in Indonesian culture. Each fabric has a rich story to tell--as a reflection of the nation's religious beliefs, sophisticated court cultures and cosmopolitan history. The extraordinary textiles in this book are from the collections of Rudolf Smend and Donald Harper. Most date from the period 1880 to 1930 when the art of batik reached its apogee. Having collected historical batik for over thirty years and published two books on the subject, Rudolf Smend has invited his friend and fellow batik specialist Donald Harper to contribute his fine collection to this publication as well. None of the batik in this book have been published before. They represent an exquisite cross-section of the batik production of Java--the most important batik-producing region in the world. The cloths are complemented by vintage photographs from the first quarter of the 20th century demonstrating how the batik were worn at court and at home. Three are from museums in Dresden and Cologne, while three are from the private collection of Leo Haks. The others have been collected over the past 30 years from private sources in Java. The captions are by Maria Wronska-Friend, an ethnologist and batik expert who frequently visits Indonesian batik centers and has worked for many years as an anthropologist in Papua New Guinea. Her contributions provide fundamental knowledge for lovers of this art form while at the same time providing new insights for experts. Rudolf Smend has invited other batik aficionados of his generation to share their passion for batik in this book. Inger McCabe Elliott, author of the bestselling Batik: Fabled Cloth of Java has contributed her lifelong experience. Other authorities like Annegret Haake, Brigitte Khan Majlis and Jonathan Hope share their views and expertise in these pages. This book represents a labor of love and a lifetime of friendship for the two authors, who hope it will provide inspiration to a whole new generation of batik lovers.

The clothes include jackets, jumpers and skirts for adults, as well as cosy winter gear for the children. A Knitter's Year features 30 projects, so you'll never be wanting for inspiration, whatever the season. Some projects are new and exclusive to the book, and all designed with love by Ida herself.

Step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to achieve a well-finished and authentic look using equipment easily obtainable at home. Create unique i-cord words and shapes with this modern guide to French knitting! French knitting, also sometimes called spool knitting or i-cord knitting, has been around for centuries. The technique traditionally involves knitting with a handheld 'dolly' or spool with four pins around the edge, to produce a narrow tube of knitting known as an i-cord. The technique involves wrapping the yarn around the pins and then lifting loops over to create the stitches. It's a simple craft that children can do but is a little slow to create the fabric, and many kids lose interest before a decent length of i-cord is produced. Luckily, technology has moved forward and now there is a hand-held mechanical mini knitting mill available that makes light work of knitting i-cords. Once the machine is threaded (with a grown-up's help) all you need to do is turn the handle and watch the magic happen as the i-cord emerges in seconds from the bottom of the mill! This fresh and modern book gives you all the tips you need to get your mechanical mini knitting mill up and running and then 40 fabulous ideas for projects - from gifts to clothing, accessories to home decor and more. No knitting mill? No problem! All the projects can be knitted in the traditional method too. Children and adults alike will love the unique designs included, with step-by-step instructions and full-size templates. Create cute wired shapes, from flowers and hearts to names and words. Sew i-cords without wires onto clothing and bags for a unique, personalized look. Make gorgeous decor for kids' bedrooms with wall hangings and dreamcatchers. Give handmade gifts in the form of i-cord jewellery and hair accessories. Have fun with pompoms, charms, beads, feathers and sequins to add some bling! This beautiful book will get kids (and adults!) excited to try out a traditional craft in a brand new way and enjoy the making process - the perfect bonding activity to do with your kids! The 40 project ideas will spark further creativity - the possibilities for this craft are limited only by your imagination - and will foster a lifelong love of making. Mini knitting mill not included.

'Part how-to guide, part manifesto - a gentle exhortation that encourages us to reconnect with our damaged belongings and ourselves.' TOAST magazine For Molly Martin, it all started with a pair of socks. Her favourite pair. When the heels became threadbare, her mother got out her darning mushroom and showed her how to reinforce the thinning stitches and bring them back to life. She has been stitching and darning ever since. In The Art of Repair, Molly explores the humble origins of repair and how the act of mending a cherished item carefully by hand offers not just a practical solution but nourishment for the soul. Using her own beautiful illustrations, she guides us through the basics of the craft - from piecing and patching to the ancient Japanese art of Sashiko. This book will stay with you long after you put down your needle and thread. It offers an antidote to our increasingly disposable lifestyle, encouraging us to reconnect not just with the everyday objects in our environment but also with ourselves. |
