Adopting a textual, chronological approach, "Studying German
Cinema" is for students of German and film studies and the general
reader with an interest in German cinema. Each of the fourteen
chapters focuses on one key film, from the groundbreaking horror
"Nosferatu" (1922) to the Oscar-winning "The Lives of Others"
(2007), and explores industrial practices both in West and East
Germany; aesthetic approaches; auteurist traditions (including
films by Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog); and ideology. Each film
is embedded in its cultural and political context, and together
they provide an overview of German history from the end of World
War I to the present.

From Neal Gabler, the definitive portrait of one of the most
important figures in twentieth-century American entertainment and
cultural history.
Seven years in the making and meticulously researched--Gabler is
the first writer to be given complete access to the Disney
archives--this is the full story of a man whose work left an
ineradicable brand on our culture but whose life has largely been
enshrouded in myth.
Gabler shows us the young Walt Disney breaking free of a heartland
childhood of discipline and deprivation and making his way to
Hollywood. We see the visionary, whose desire for escape honed an
innate sense of what people wanted to see on the screen and, when
combined with iron determination and obsessive perfectionism, led
him to the reinvention of animation. It was Disney, first with
Mickey Mouse and then with his feature films--most notably "Snow
White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, "and "Bambi--"who transformed
animation from a novelty based on movement to an art form that
presented an illusion of life."
"
We see him reimagine the amusement park with Disneyland, prompting
critics to coin the word "Disneyfication" to describe the process
by which reality can be modified to fit one's personal desires. At
the same time, he provided a new way to connect with American
history through his live-action films and purveyed a view of the
country so coherent that even today one can speak meaningfully of
"Walt Disney's America." We see how the True-Life Adventure nature
documentaries he produced helped create the environmental movement
by sensitizing the general public to issues of conservation. And we
see how he reshaped the entertainment industry by building a
synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks,
music, book publishing, and merchandise in a way that was
unprecedented and was later widely imitated.
Gabler also reveals a wounded, lonely, and often disappointed man,
who, despite worldwide success, was plagued with financial problems
much of his life, suffered a nervous breakdown, and at times
retreated into pitiable seclusion in his workshop making model
trains. Gabler explores accusations that Disney was a red-baiter,
an anti-Semite, an embittered alcoholic. But whatever the
characterizations of Disney's personal life, he appealed to the
nation by demonstrating the power of wish fulfillment and the
triumph of the American imagination. Walt Disney showed how one
could impose one's will on the world.
This is a masterly biography, a revelation of both the work and the
man--of both the remarkable accomplishment and the hidden life
Two-time Peabody Award-winning writer and producer Ira Rosen
reveals the intimate, untold stories of his decades at America's
most iconic news show. It's a 60 Minutesstory on 60 Minutes itself.
When producer Ira Rosen walked into the 60 Minutes offices in June
1980, he knew he was about to enter television history. His career
catapulted him to the heights of TV journalism, breaking some of
the most important stories in TV news. But behind the scenes was a
war room of clashing producers, anchors, and the most formidable 60
Minutes figure: legendary correspondent Mike Wallace. Based on
decades of access and experience, Ira Rosen takes readers behind
closed doors to offer an incisive look at the show that invented TV
investigative journalism. With surprising humor, charm, and an eye
for colorful detail, Rosen delivers an authoritative account of the
unforgettable personalities that battled for prestige, credit, and
the desire to scoop everyone else in the game. As one of Mike
Wallace's top producers, Rosen reveals the interview secrets that
made Wallace's work legendary, and the flaring temper that made him
infamous. Later, as senior producer of ABC News Primetime Live and
20/20, Rosen exposes the competitive environment among famous
colleagues like Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters, and the power
plays between correspondents Chris Wallace, Anderson Cooper, and
Chris Cuomo. A master class in how TV news is made, Rosen shows
readers how 60 Minutes puts together a story when sources are
explosive, unreliable, and even dangerous. From unearthing shocking
revelations from inside the Trump White House, to an outrageous
proposition from Ghislaine Maxwell, to interviewing gangsters Joe
Bonanno and John Gotti, Jr., Ira Rosen was behind the scenes of
some of 60 Minutes' most sensational stories. Highly entertaining,
dishy, and unforgettable, Ticking Clock is a never-before-told
account of the most successful news show in American history.
Paris Nights: My Year at the Moulin Rouge opens with a bored
twenty-seven-year old Cliff Simon staring out at the ocean from his
beachfront house, wishing he was somewhere else. Gavin Mills
telephones him from Paris inviting him to join him at the iconic
Moulin Rouge. Cliff sells everything he owns, leaving Johannesburg,
South Africa for the City of Lights. He learns that his spot at the
Moulin is not guaranteed and is forced to audition. Making the
grade, he is put into can can school before he is allowed into the
company. His adrenaline is pumping from excitement and fear, both
of which he has faced before. Taking a look back, we see
twelve-year-old Cliff helming a racing dinghy in the midst of a
thunderstorm on the Vaal River. His father yells at him not to be a
sissy, and he brings the boat back to shore alone. We then travel
to London with his family escaping the tumult of Apartheid. He
trains for the Olympics, but drops out, enrolling in the South
African military where he subjected to harsh treatment and name
calling Fokken Jood. After a honorable discharge, he works in
cabaret at seaside resorts and is recruited as a gymnast in a
cabaret, where he realizes that the stage is his destiny. The
memoir fast forwards to Cliffs meteoric rise at the Moulin from
swing dancer to principal in Formidable. Off stage he gets into
fights with street thugs, hangs out with diamond smugglers, and has
his pick of gorgeous women. With a year at the Moulin to his
credit, doors open for him internationally and back in South
Africa. He earns a starring role in Egoli: Place of Gold, and
marries his long-time girlfriend, Colette. On their honeymoon to
Paris, Cliff says, Merci Paris for the best year of my life.

"Book of the Year." -- MOJO Magazine"Outstanding Book of the Year."
--The Herald (Glasgow) A Best Book of the Year by NPR, Pitchfork,
The Telegraph, and UncutA tender and intimate memoir by one of the
most remarkable, trailblazing, and tenacious women in music, the
two-time Grammy Award-winning "premiere song-stylist and songwriter
of her generation" (Hilton Als), Rickie Lee Jones This troubadour
life is only for the fiercest hearts, only for those vessels that
can be broken to smithereens and still keep beating out the rhythm
for a new song. Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever
no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner
Rickie Lee Jones in her own words. It is a tale of desperate
chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who
beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary
artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into
timeless music. With candor and lyricism, the "Duchess of
Coolsville" (Time) takes us on a singular journey through her
nomadic childhood, to her years as a teenage runaway, through her
legendary love affair with Tom Waits and ultimately her longevity
as the hardest working woman in rock and roll. Rickie Lee's stories
are rich with the infamous characters of her early songs -
"Chuck-E's in Love," "Weasel and the White Boys Cool," "Danny's
All-Star Joint," and "Easy Money"-- but long before her notoriety
in show business, there was a vaudevillian cast of hitchhikers,
bank robbers, jail breaks, drug mules, a pimp with a heart of gold
and tales of her fabled ancestors. In this tender and intimate
memoir by one of the most remarkable, trailblazing, and tenacious
women in music are never-before-told stories of the girl in the
raspberry beret, a singer-songwriter whose music defied
categorization and inspired American pop culture for decades.
