Just a 20-minute ferry ride from the place of the first permanent
English settlement at Jamestown on the southern banks of the James
River begins 306 square miles of ravines and level lands, fresh
water streams and creeks, and scenic views of Virginia's longest
river. Surry was formed in 1652 and was most likely named by early
colonists in honor of the English county of Surrey and in
recognition of its location, as it lay across the Thames from
London, as did Surry from Jamestown. For more than 350 years, Surry
has depended on an agriculture economy and small businesses that
developed around the meat processing industry, lumber harvesting,
and farming. Residents, state officials, and now this photographic
collection help to preserve this wonderful slice of American
history.

Schatz presents 96 full-color photographs of this picturesque
state. The images convey the area's beauty and moods, with
landscapes large and small, as well as lively city scenes.
Old-timers and newcomers will see Tennessee in original ways, as
Schatz's photographs convey clear impressions of urban amenities,
public attractions, and woodland scenes. Dramatic, vividly orange
sky scenes of the sun dropping into the mountains are
counterbalanced by pastel-colored sunrises and misty panoramas of
tranquil streams and startlingly bright autumn foliage. The
region's unique history provides a focal point throughout the book.
Architecture, wildflowers, and the rich tapestry of lush vegetation
and abundant waterways round out the offerings. Informative
captions complement the photographs, providing enough detail that
even casual readers who simply browse through the photos will learn
about Tennessee's fascinating history and contemporary culture.
Tennessee Impressions is a bright, inclusive, and affectionate
tribute to the state. Visitors and locals alike will cherish this
fine book of photography.
