This is a detailed study of some 150 unpublished and never-before-seen images of soldiers of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) and the Army of Occupation taken in France and Germany during and after World War I. As opposed to the stateside training-camp photos and formal portraits taken on return to the USA, this is an in-depth look at what the AEF looked like as they were actively engaged in the business of making the world safe for democracy. These images cover every rank and grade of soldier in the AEF from General Pershing to fresh-faced privates, and every occupational specialty from infantryman to cook. Details of uniforms and equipment, locations, times, and places have been painstakingly researched for each image.

Photographer Deirdre O'Callaghan has produced an unsettling but ultimately engaging document of the residents at Arlington House, Europe's largest men's refuge. Built in the early 20th century for intinerant Irish workers, many of the residents have been displaced from their home country and suffer from mental and physical disabilities, largely alcoholism. O'Callaghan's work reveals the humour and companionship the men derive from their shared experience, both in the refuge and on their sponsored return trips to Ireland. This book won the ICP Infinity Award for best publication in 2003 and the Rencontres de la Photographie D'Arles award for best book. It was also included in the PDN Photography Annual 2003 in the best books category

‘I want to make a picture that could stand on its own, regardless of what it was a picture of. I’ve never been a bit interested in the fact that this was a picture of a blues musician or a street corner or something.’ – William Eggleston William Eggleston’s photographs are special for their eccentric, unexpected compositions, playfulness, implied narrative and, above all, his portrayals of people. Over the past half-‐century he has created a powerful and enduring body of work featuring friends and family, musicians, artists and others. Eggleston frequented the 1970s Memphis club scene, developing friendships and getting to know musicians, including Ike Turner, Alex Chilton and others. His fascination with the nightclub culture resulted in the experimental video Stranded in Canton (2005), which chronicles visits to bars in Memphis, Mississippi, and New Orleans. At the same time he encountered and photographed the likes of Dennis Hopper, Eudora Welty and Walter Hopps – and for a brief moment Eggleston even entered the Warhol Factory scene, dating the Warhol protégé, Viva. William Eggleston: Portraits accompanies the first exhibition to explore Eggleston’s pictures of people. Works included span his career from the 1950s through to his well-‐known portraits of the 1970s to the present day. The catalogue includes an essay, chronology and beautifully reproduced exhibition plates, as well as a series of revealing interviews with Eggleston and his close family members, conducted in Memphis by exhibition curator Phillip Prodger.

Photography and the Doctor - John Adamson of St Andrews (Paperback): A.D. Morrison-Low, David Bruce Photography and the Doctor - John Adamson of St Andrews (Paperback)
A.D. Morrison-Low, David Bruce
R490 Discovery Miles 4 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 2015 portraits by Dr John Adamson were displayed at the National Museum of Scotland exhibition Photography: A Victorian Sensation. The audience response to these powerful works was such that this book has been produced, the first devoted to placing his work in its historical context and to acquainting a new audience with his work which, for conservation reasons, cannot be displayed all the time. Dr Adamson (1809-70) was the older brother of the better known Robert Adamson (1821-48), famous for his pioneering photography work with D. O. Hill. John Adamson remained an amateur; his photography had to be fitted in around his busy medical practice in St Andrews. The photographs are drawn mainly from two extremely early and significant albums, presented to the Museum in the 1940s. An Appendix has technical information on, for example: camera obscura, lenses, daguerreotype, calotype, the albumen process, and the collodian negative process.

American Geography - A Reckoning with a Dream (Hardcover): Matt Black American Geography - A Reckoning with a Dream (Hardcover)
Matt Black
R982 Discovery Miles 9 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

American Geography is the visual record of Magnum photographer Matt Black's five-year, 100,000-mile road trip across 46 states of the United States, plus Puerto Rico. It examines the conditions of powerlessness, prejudice and pragmatism among America's poor. The project originated in Matt Black's exploration of his own home town in California's rural Central Valley - a place that has been called 'the other California' - where one third of the population lives in poverty. Travelling out from that location in 2015, he went on to visit designated 'poverty areas' - places with poverty rates of above 20% as defined by the US census. He found that, rather than being anomalies, 'poverty areas' are never more than two-hour's drive apart. They are woven throughout the fabric of the country, yet are cut off from the 'land of opportunity'. Matt Black's compelling black and white photographs, from which one can trace a line back to the FSA Photographers of the 1930s and 1940s such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, are accompanied by his own travelogue - an eclectic combination of observations, overheard conversations in cafes and city buses, diner menus, bus timetables, historical facts and echoes from daily news reports - which enrich the vivid portrait of these 'states of un-America.' With 100 illustrations in colour

During apartheid, Jurgen Schadeberg worked for the leading black publications of the time. This way he had access to the likes of a young activists, like the lawyer, named Nelson Mandela. Iconic pictures of many future South African leaders followed.Judge Albie Sachs, an ANC operative who lost an arm in an attack by the security police, says of this collection: Jurgen Schadeberg wrenches moments and people right out of time, place and mood, so that we can engage with them here and now, as we are, at the instant of looking. We gasp and feel a frisson of delight at each picture. Was it really like that? Look at the faces as they were then, the hairstyles, the clothes people wore, the way they looked at each other. What is still the same, what has changed? There is the honesty of values, the dignified and respectful treatment of the subject matter and especially the people who might be involved. In this respect Jurgen s photographs are extraordinarily sensitive. "

What could be more American than the country fair? For more than 250 years, local fairs have been a symbol of grassroots America. They're a place to show pride in the homegrown and handmade, connect with neighbors and friends, and compete for the best draft horses and dairy cows, pumpkins, and cherry pie. Photographs of 13 country fairs in eastern and central Pennsylvania capture scenes of farm implements, sideshows, funnel cakes, cotton candy, and the magic of the midway after dark. For young and old, urbanites and country folk, regular fair-goers and rookies, this book shows why millions of people across the nation flock to the fair and continue the competitions between neighbors and friends that have gone on for years-and sometimes generations.

Paolo Ventura's Short Stories are whimsical narratives told through pictures-tales of love, war, and family-where things magically appear or disappear, set in an imaginary past of World War II Italy. Much like in silent films, the drama unfolds with no words or captions. For these works, Ventura constructed life-sized sets, in which he situated himself and members of his family (casting his son, wife, and twin brother as actors), in stories that are at once charming and disquieting. While seemingly simple, Ventura's vignettes come with larger implications: brothers who encounter each other by surprise on the battlefield, jugglers who appear from above, a man who packs himself into his suitcase, a small-town magician who accidently makes his son disappear for real, and many others. Here, Ventura has built a world of realistic proportions and actors, in fantastical tales and against painted backdrops-challenging notions of what is real and what is make-believe. This book collects the entire series of Ventura's Short Stories together for the first time, including three previously unpublished, and offers a glimpse into the artist's extraordinary imagination. Paolo Ventura (born in Milan, 1968) graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in 1991. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Forma International Center for Photography, Milan; Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles, France; and Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris. He also created a series of works for the Italian pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale. His works have been acquired by prominent collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; and the Margulies Collection, Miami. His monographs include War Souvenir (2006), Winter Stories (Aperture and Contrasto, 2009), and The Automaton (2012).

Body As a Negative (Paperback): Izabela Jurcewicz Body As a Negative (Paperback)
Izabela Jurcewicz
R818 Discovery Miles 8 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Treated for a rare tumor, the young photographer of Polish origin has transformed her illness and her body, scrutinized by science, into a remarkable work of art. In this work Izabela Jurcewicz deals with traumatic memories written in the body on a cellular level. She was an interorgan tumor patient, one of 300 cases worldwide, where science had few answers to the cause and how to proceed. This experience of a patient being 'on view', researched and scanned, coined her relationship with the camera and ways of seeing a human. These medical experiences, especially surgeries, live as a photographic negative in her body and life, which henceforth produce images, including the ones that form this book. In the act of return, Izabela replaces the invasive surgical instrument with her camera as a receptive device to register, merge and enable a ritual of healing. To synchronize the level of knowledge in her body and mind, she reperforms the trauma under her conditions and rewrites her memories, aiming to change them at a cellular level. At the same time this work gives her perspective to see and support her father, who at that time is going through intensive cancer treatment. The project highlights the process of emphatic engagement that brings dimensionality to the body and self again and grows a capacity to join with the suffering of others. "By rewriting her story in a photographic face-to-face, by taking back her body and telling the story on her own terms, by creating a link with suffering but also a link with life and with others (in this instance with her own father, treated for cancer), the work of Izabel Jurcewicz deploys the full power of enhanced auto-fiction." - Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents 2020

Anthony Dawton
R756 Discovery Miles 7 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When photographer Anthony Dawton realised how dramatically homelessness had increased in London, he took to the streets with his cam-era. For years he had taken photographs in areas of need worldwide, but after spending some time in his home city, he noticed how many people were living on its streets. He embarked on a new project to raise awareness for a city he no longer recognised: NOTLondon. Anthony Dawton photographs his subjects with a beauty and dignity that many of them are often denied. His portraits capture the strength and power of humanity as well as its vulnerability. By accompanying the image with the person's name and their story, Anthony gives voice to the voiceless and attempts to offer the homeless a place, a home on the page. Governmental institutions turn a blind eye to the homeless, leaving the work up to charities. Homeless shelters are rife with substance abuse, making them a dangerous place for those trying to overcome addiction. Homelessness becomes a vicious cycle and many find it difficult to break free. Since the start of the pandemic, over 70,000 households in the UK have been made homeless. Dawton's photographs are mesmerising, and as we stare into the eyes of their subjects, we're faced with reality: this is a problem that's getting worse and needs urgent attention. NOTLondon is a provoking campaign to help the city's most vulnerable and to address the fact that, despite its wealth, the city is not providing for those most in need. NOTLondon includes an introduction by Leilani Fahra, former UN special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing and the Global Director of The Shift. Having dedicated her life's work to changing attitudes to homelessness and attacking the governmental systems and structures which perpetrate homelessness, she shares her thoughts in NOTLondon, highlighting the importance of Dawton's project.

Now available in a paperback edition, LaToya Ruby Frazier's award-winning first book, The Notion of Family, offers an incisive exploration of the legacy of racism and economic decline in America's small towns, as embodied by her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania. The work also considers the impact of that decline on the community and on her family, creating a statement both personal and truly political-an intervention in the histories and narratives of the region. Frazier has compellingly set her story of three generations-her Grandma Ruby, her mother, and herself-against larger questions of civic belonging and responsibility. The work documents her own struggles and interactions with family and the expectations of community, and includes the documentation of the demise of Braddock's only hospital, reinforcing the idea that the history of a place is frequently written on the body as well as the landscape. With The Notion of Family, Frazier knowingly acknowledges and expands upon the traditions of classic black-and-white documentary photography, enlisting the participation of her family, and her mother in particular. In the creation of these collaborative works, Frazier reinforces the idea of art and image-making as a transformative act, a means of resetting traditional power dynamics and narratives-both those of her family and of the community at large.

The stunning photographs in this book are not only an anthropological study on the types of work done all over the world and the different societies which undertake them, but are also a real look at work that is still carried out by manual labour, usually away from the Western World. This fascinating collection reveals the intricacies of these jobs and the people who perform them, looking in detail at farmers, tailors, mechanics and a huge number of other industries where the physical work of men and women create communities who pride themselves on ingenuity and creativity. ' People at Work' is a captivating look at the socioeconomic development of different communities around the world and how they are fundamentally shaped by the type of work they perform. The evolution of technology in the modern age has meant that most job titles have become ambiguous and the notion of work in the traditional sense has been lost to a certain extent. This beautiful volume looks at the hands-on approach to work in an innovative way. R655 Discovery Miles 6 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It's hard to imagine a place more central to American mythology today than Silicon Valley. To outsiders, the region glitters with the promise of extraordinary wealth and innovation. But behind this image lies another Silicon Valley, one segregated by race, class, and nationality in complex and contradictory ways. Its beautiful landscape lies atop underground streams of pollutants left behind by decades of technological innovation, and while its billionaires live in compounds, surrounded by redwood trees and security fences, its service workers live in their cars. With arresting photography and intimate stories, Seeing Silicon Valley makes this hidden world visible. Instead of young entrepreneurs striving for efficiency in minimalist corporate campuses, we see portraits of struggle-families displaced by an impossible real estate market, workers striving for a living wage, and communities harmed by environmental degradation. If the fate of Silicon Valley is the fate of America-as so many of its boosters claim-then this book gives us an unvarnished look into the future.

From the frontlines of the war in Ukraine comes this compelling collection of 200+ images from world-class photographers that captures the humanity, perseverance, and determination of the nation's fight for freedom and independence against all odds. This is extraordinary and vital work." - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Hume Kennerly. Ukraine's most famous living writer, Kurkov provides an emotional, heartfelt reflection on what's happening to his country in relation to the pictures displayed in the book. Pulitzer Prize winner and personal photographer to President Gerald Ford, David Hume Kennerly. Kennerly speaks to the emotional and physical risk photojournalists take in covering war alongside their mission to show truth. As Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in his address to U.S. Congress, Russia "went on a brutal offensive against our values, basic human values. It threw tanks and planes against our freedom, against our right to live freely in our own country, choosing our own future, against our desire for happiness, against our national dreams, just like the same dreams you have, you Americans." Relentless Courage delivers a gripping, visual portfolio of images that remind us of our shared humanity, what is right, and what's at stake when independence and freedom come under attack.
