Thatcher’s Children was born out of a series first made in 1992
focusing on two parents and six children living in a hostel for
homeless families in Blackpool, England. The project was made in
response to a speech by Peter Lilley, then Secretary of State for
Social Security, in which he announced his determination to
‘close down the something-for-nothing society.’ French
newspaper Libération dispatched a journalist to northern England
to find out what this society looked like, and Easton was
commissioned to take the accompanying photographs. His resulting
monochrome images of the overcrowded two-bedroom council flat in
Blackpool sparked a reaction by both the public and the press. His
images attached human faces and nuanced realities to a group of
people casually maligned by politicians and media as an
‘underclass of scroungers.’
Whether you're thinking of getting a tattoo or just want to see to
what lengths others have gone in decorating their bodies, this is
the book to check out. 1000 Tattoos explores the history of the art
worldwide via designs and photos-from 19th-century engravings to
tribal body art, from circus ladies of the '20s to classic biker
designs. About the series Bibliotheca Universalis - Compact
cultural companions celebrating the eclectic TASCHEN universe!
The Canon PowerShot G16 compact digital camera is the successor to
the successful G15 and the first in the G-series to come equipped
with built-in Wi-Fi. This facility makes it ideal for sharing
images and video on social networking websites, or via email
through the Canon Image Gateway. Images can also be uploaded using
the maker's compatible iOS(R) or Android(t) device with the
download of a free Canon CameraWindow app. The G16's 28 - 140mm
wide-angle lens has an aperture range of f/1.8 - f/2.8, making it
ideal for shooting in low-light conditions or for capturing a
dramatic shallow depth-of-field with soft backgrounds. The camera
features Canon's HS System, which combines a DIGIC 6 image
processor and a 12.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS image sensor.
Autofocus (AF) times and reduced shooting lag are improved over
previous G-series models and continuous shooting speeds of up to
9.3 frames-per-second are possible. New shooting modes include Star
mode for capturing the night sky: Star Nightscape will capture
stars in a landscape image, while Star Trails will capture trails
of stars in a still image; Star Time Lapse Movie will shoot
continuous still images of stars and combine them into a video that
replicates the motion of the stars in the sky.
The quintessential British landscape--the seaside--is the subject
of these nostalgic Polaroids by the acclaimed English photographer
Jon Nicholson. Anyone who grew up holidaying on England's beaches
is familiar with the distinctive features of these historic
resorts--not the exclusive haunts of the rich and famous, but the
gritty, often rocky shores of the Atlantic and the Irish and North
Seas, filled with amusement arcades, bathing huts, beach umbrellas,
and people of all ages and classes. Jon Nicolson's Polaroid SX-70
camera is the perfect vehicle to capture the color and character of
summers at the sea. At once immediate and ephemeral, these
delicately hued, slightly muted images taken with original,
out-of-date film stock depict the faded glory of Yarmouth's giant
piers, Brighton's pebbly shores, the Blackpool Pleasure Beach
amusement park, and many other resorts across Britain. Each of the
70 photographs is beautifully reproduced on its own page with
descriptive captions. A foreword by Joseph Galliano provides a wry,
contemporary perspective on these beloved, centuries-old locations.
Art, war, carnival or cult — masks have two sides: They conceal
and hide, and at the same time create new personalities, strange
and captivating at once. So, too, do masks reveal world views of
time and place: cult masks from Africa, mediaeval knight helmets,
fantasy masks of famous film heroes like Darth Vader, or gas masks
and VR glasses as modern functional objects. In this new photo
book, Russian photographer Olga Michi traces our millennia-old
fascination with masks. Her expressive pictures place the masks
centre-stage, creating a new, surrealistic aesthetic. With
fascinating texts on each mask’s cultural-historical
significance, this high-quality photo book delights, informs, and
ignites the imagination. Text in English, French, German, and
Russian.

Open your eyes to a new world view with 100 women and nonbinary
photojournalists' stories from behind the lens. 85% of
photojournalists are men. That means almost everything that is
reported in the world is seen through men's eyes. Similarly, spaces
and communities men don't have access to are left undocumented and
forgotten. With the camera limited to the hands of one gender,
photographic 'truth' is more subjective than it seems. To answer
this serious ethical problem, Women Photograph flips that bias on
its head to show what and how women and nonbinary photojournalists
see. From documenting major events such as 9/11 to capturing unseen
and misrepresented communities, this book presents a revisionist
contemporary history: pore over 50 years of women's dispatches in
100 photographs. Each image is accompanied by 200 words from the
photographer about the experience and the subject, offering fresh
insights and a much-needed perspective. Until we have balanced,
representative reporting, the camera cannot offer a mirror to our
global society. To get the full picture, we need a diverse range of
people behind the lens. This book offers a first step. Relearn how
to see with this evergreen catalogue that elevates the voices of
women and nonbinary visual storytellers.

Photographic stills of women, appearing in both press coverage and
relief campaigns, have long been central to the documentation of
war and civil conflict. Images of non-Western women, in particular,
regularly function as symbols of the misery and hopelessness of the
oppressed. Featured on the front pages of newspapers and in NGO
reports, they inform public understandings of war and peace,
victims and perpetrators, but within a discourse that often
obscures social and political subjectivities. Uniquely, this book
deconstructs - in a systematic, gender-sensitive way - the
repetitive circulation of certain images of war, conflict and state
violence, in order to scrutinize the role of photographic tropes in
the globalized visual sphere. Zarzycka builds on feminist theories
of representations of war to explore how the concepts of femininity
and war secure each other's intelligibility in photographic
practices. This book examines the complex connections between
photographic tropes and the individuals and communities they
represent, in order to rethink the medium of photography as a
discursive and political practice. This book interrogates both the
structure and transmission of contemporary encounters with war,
violence, and conflict. It will appeal to advanced students and
scholars of gender studies, visual studies, media studies,
photography theory, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, and
trauma and memory studies.

Bangladesh has been shunned by tourists from the moment it was
created in 1971. Henry Kissinger described it as a basketcase.
Poverty and humanitarian disasters defined Bangladesh in the
ensuing decades. When Rupert Grey arrived in Dhaka in 1992, a sign
announced that arrivals were ‘Welcome to Bangladesh before the
tourists get here’. They still haven’t. Grey first came to
Bangladesh as a London lawyer armed with three FM2 cameras. Many
journeys and 30 years later he is a photographer armed with a
useful legal background. The catalysts were Chobi Mela, the
festival of photography, and its founder Shahidul Alam, an
acclaimed photographer, human rights activist and Time magazine’s
Person of the Year in 2018. This book charts Grey’s love affair
with Bangladesh, including an epic transcontinental journey through
India to Chobi Mela in a vintage Rolls-Royce, later portrayed in
the award-winning, Sharon Stone produced film Romantic Road. His
photographs, mostly taken on film, speak powerfully of the cultural
vitality and energy which Kissinger missed, and which inspired
Grey’s Homage to Bangladesh. As a libel and copyright lawyer
Rupert has represented national papers, politicians, bankers,
celebrities and explorers. He serves on the board of a number of
front-line charities in the arts, education, photography and marine
exploration. He has travelled on foot and horseback, by dug-out
canoe, dog sledge, camel, elephant, bush-plane and Land Rover to
the wild places of the earth. His photographs have been exhibited
in several countries including Bangladesh, and his articles have
been widely published. He lives with his wife Jan in a remote
thatched cottage in Sussex, England, with their three daughters
nearby.
Angus Stewart has spent 10 years backstage with London's burlesque
community, getting to know the performers and documenting their
shared world to create what he calls 'a family album'. From the
beginning, his focus was on the personalities, rather than the
performances. He deliberately eschews the 'big reveal'. Instead,
his photographs capture the friendships, the laughter and the
camaraderie that characterise the burlesque scene. We are
introduced to a thriving community that values dedication and
loyalty, and where the exotic is always laced with humour; and we
hear from performers Rara Avis, Belle de Beauvoir, Cerise Rei, Lady
Cheek, Lady May, Lynn Ruth Miller and Vixen Victoire. Burlesque can
be provocative, it can be political, and it can be serious. But it
can also be a lot of fun. 'I discovered that while some performers
earn a living from burlesque, most have other jobs - anything from
seamstresses to doctors, to company directors. This huge melting
pot of professional experience, coupled with a variety of reasons
for wanting to perform, means that personal development is
encouraged. It's an incredibly supportive community, and I wanted
to try to capture that spirit.' - Angus Stewart
