Oculoplastic Surgery Atlas - Cosmetic Facial Surgery (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2018): Geoffrey J. Gladstone, Frank A. Nesi, Evan H.... Oculoplastic Surgery Atlas - Cosmetic Facial Surgery (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2018)
Geoffrey J. Gladstone, Frank A. Nesi, Evan H. Black
R2,875 Discovery Miles 28 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the first edition of this atlas was published in 2005, it was well received throughout the oculoplastic and ophthalmology community for its simplicity and clinical focus. Now, a decade later, surgical techniques have been updated to reflect current practice models and advances in technology. The field of oculoplastic surgery has grown and evolved to include all aspects of facial plastic surgery and the literature must now reflect the advancements of this field. Oculoplastic Surgery Atlas: Cosmetic Facial Surgery, 2nd edition combines text and diagrams, plus surgical videos that enable readers to perform this surgery with the best possible instruction and preparation. Written for ophthalmology specialists and residents, this new edition presents many aspects of facial cosmetic surgery, including blepharoplasty, endoscopic forehead surgery, rhytidectomy, and soft tissue and lip augmentation. Review of the previous edition: "The book offers insight into the possibilities and technology of modern aesthetic cosmetic surgery in the face region. ... The book can be recommended for the aesthetic surgeon and for ophthalmologists. ... The ophthalmologic plastic surgeon will find this book of interest especially in showing a lot of additional possibilities and dimensions in this field. The book will be an asset in every ophthalmic surgeons library." (Karl-Heinz Emmerich, Graefe's Archiv for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 245, 2007)

The Look of a Woman - Facial Feminization Surgery and the Aims of Trans- Medicine (Hardcover): Eric Plemons The Look of a Woman - Facial Feminization Surgery and the Aims of Trans- Medicine (Hardcover)
Eric Plemons
R2,363 Discovery Miles 23 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Developed in the United States in the 1980s, facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a set of bone and soft tissue reconstructive surgical procedures intended to feminize the faces of trans- women. While facial surgery was once considered auxiliary to genital surgery, many people now find that these procedures confer distinct benefits according to the different models of sex and gender in which they intervene. Surgeons advertise that FFS not only improves a trans- woman's appearance; it allows her to be recognized as a woman by those who see her. In The Look of a Woman Eric Plemons foregrounds the narratives of FFS patients and their surgeons as they move from consultation and the operating room to postsurgery recovery. He shows how the increasing popularity of FFS represents a shift away from genital-based conceptions of trans- selfhood in ways that mirror the evolving views of what is considered to be good trans- medicine. Outlining how conflicting models of trans- therapeutics play out in practice, Plemons demonstrates how FFS is changing the project of surgical sex reassignment by reconfiguring the kind of sex that surgery aims to change.

R2,898 Discovery Miles 28 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The perception of an inadequate body shape is a cause of concern to many people, and new techniques for altering body shape are increasingly being developed and offered to patients. Of these, the removal and transfer of fat is fast growing in importance and availability. This practical guide offers a comprehensive overview of this rapidly-evolving field, and thorough coverage of the implementation of fat removal techniques, both invasive and non-invasive, in a cosmetic practice. It begins with an overview of basic fat anatomy and physiology as an important introduction to this topic. The distinction between the physiology and treatment of cellulite and fat is also discussed. The next section of the book covers invasive treatments of fat such as traditional liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, fat transfer procedures and mesotherapy. The latter half of the book largely focuses on non-invasive treatments for fat, including radiofrequency, ultrasound, cooling and laser technologies for fat removal. Throughout, potential complications and pitfalls of the various treatments are discussed. Weight Regulation and Curing Acquired Obesity (Paperback): Gary Horndeski, Elisa Gonzalez Weight Regulation and Curing Acquired Obesity (Paperback)
Gary Horndeski, Elisa Gonzalez
R2,099 Discovery Miles 20 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Addressing the problem of how weight is regulated, how obesity is acquired, and how it is cured, Weight Regulation and Curing Acquired Obesity provides the mathematical basis of control system theory as applied to weight regulation. Unlike the majority of weight control literature which focuses on biochemistry, this innovative title discusses the biomechanical aspects of a dual closed loop system which mechanically senses meal volume and accumulated intraabdominal fat, where accurate sensation depends on the mechanical strength of the anterior abdominal wall. Presents a unified theory of weight regulation, explains the pathology of acquired obesity, and offers therapy directed to correct the underlying pathophysiology. Discusses surgical therapy directed to re-establish the strength of the anterior abdominal wall, reverse the pathology, and cure acquired obesity. Contains a chapter on future animal and human studies to support the neuromechanical hypothesis.

D. Jones
R2,965 Discovery Miles 29 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the innovative field of cosmetic dermatology, the range of products and methods available to patients is expanding all the time. Prominent among these are facial fillers, which, when injected into and beneath the skin, help alleviate wrinkles and improve smoothness. However, the many fillers on offer have varying characteristics and effects, and practitioners must be properly trained in order to administer them safely and successfully. Injectable Fillers offers those performing these popular procedures an in-depth and far-reaching survey of current best practices, with a strong emphasis on safety. Covering everything from the science behind facial fillers to their appropriate means of application, the book places each product in context, demonstrating the pros and cons of the expanding range of hyaluronic acids and calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres, and exploring injectable submental fat reduction with sodium deoxycholate. This second edition broadens the scope of discussion to also include chin, mandible, temple, nose, brow, and forehead injections, as well as the use of cannulas as an alternative to needles.

This atlas from a renowned European authorship will document in detail what is involved in the practical clinical techniques of mesotherapy and will be an essential reference.

Under the Knife - Cosmetic Surgery, Boundary Work, and the Pursuit of the Natural Fake (Paperback): Samantha Kwan, Jennifer... Under the Knife - Cosmetic Surgery, Boundary Work, and the Pursuit of the Natural Fake (Paperback)
Samantha Kwan, Jennifer Graves
R687 Discovery Miles 6 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most women who elect to have cosmetic surgery want a "natural" outcome-a discrete alteration of the body that appears unaltered. Under the Knife examines this theme in light of a cultural paradox. Whereas women are encouraged to improve their appearance, there is also a stigma associated with those who do so via surgery. Samantha Kwan and Jennifer Graves reveal how women negotiate their "unnatural"-but hopefully (in their view) natural-looking-surgically-altered bodies. Based on in-depth interviews with 46 women who underwent cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance, the authors investigate motivations for surgery as well as women's thoughts about looking natural after the procedures. Under the Knife dissects the psychological and physical strategies these women use to manage the expectations, challenges, and disappointments of cosmetic surgery while also addressing issues of agency and empowerment. It shows how different cultural intersections can produce varied goals and values around body improvement. Under the Knife highlights the role of deep-seated yet contradictory gendered meanings about women's bodies, passing, and boundary work. The authors also consider traditional notions of femininity and normalcy that trouble women's struggle to preserve an authentic moral self.
