When the first edition of this atlas was published in 2005, it was
well received throughout the oculoplastic and ophthalmology
community for its simplicity and clinical focus. Now, a decade
later, surgical techniques have been updated to reflect current
practice models and advances in technology. The field of
oculoplastic surgery has grown and evolved to include all aspects
of facial plastic surgery and the literature must now reflect the
advancements of this field. Oculoplastic Surgery Atlas: Cosmetic
Facial Surgery, 2nd edition combines text and diagrams, plus
surgical videos that enable readers to perform this surgery with
the best possible instruction and preparation. Written for
ophthalmology specialists and residents, this new edition presents
many aspects of facial cosmetic surgery, including blepharoplasty,
endoscopic forehead surgery, rhytidectomy, and soft tissue and lip
augmentation. Review of the previous edition: "The book offers
insight into the possibilities and technology of modern aesthetic
cosmetic surgery in the face region. ... The book can be
recommended for the aesthetic surgeon and for ophthalmologists. ...
The ophthalmologic plastic surgeon will find this book of interest
especially in showing a lot of additional possibilities and
dimensions in this field. The book will be an asset in every
ophthalmic surgeons library." (Karl-Heinz Emmerich, Graefe's Archiv
for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 245, 2007)

The technological capacity to transform biology - repairing,
reshaping and replacing body parts, chemicals and functions - is
now part of our lives. Humanity is confronted with a variety of
affordable and non-invasive 'enhancement technologies': anti-ageing
medicine, aesthetic surgery, cognitive and sexual enhancers,
lifestyle drugs, prosthetics and hormone supplements. This
collection focuses on why people find these practices so seductive
and provides ethnographic insights into people's motives and
aspirations as they embrace or reject enhancement technologies,
which are closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class,
age, nationality and ethnicity.

Biomechanics of Tendons and Ligaments: Tissue Reconstruction looks
at the structure and function of tendons and ligaments. Biological
and synthetic biomaterials for their reconstruction and
regeneration are reviewed, and their biomechanical performance is
discussed. Regeneration tendons and ligaments are soft connective
tissues which are essential for the biomechanical function of the
skeletal system. These tissues are often prone to injuries which
can range from repetition and overuse, to tears and ruptures.
Understanding the biomechanical properties of ligaments and tendons
is essential for their repair and regeneration.

This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the latest
advances in basic and translational research in the field of
reconstructive transplantation and its potential therapeutic
implications. Dr. Thomas E. Starzl and Dr. Raimund Margreiter, both
pioneers in the field of transplantation, have written the foreword
for the book. The volume spans such topics as skin rejection,
immune monitoring, stem cell-based immunomodulatory strategies,
costimulatory blockade, tolerance induction, chronic rejection,
ischemia reperfusion injury, nerve regeneration, cortical
reintegration, and small and large animal models for reconstructive
transplantation. The book is intended for biomedical researchers

reference.
One of the most important factors in ensuring successful
osseointegration is the stability of the implant after its
insertion. In order to achieve optimum conditions for implantation,
it is often necessary to prepare the area and reconstruct the bone
to ensure that it is the correct shape and size for the implant.
Preprosthetic and maxillofacial surgery provides a thorough review
of the current status and future direction of this important field.
Part one reviews bone grafting for implantology and reconstructive
preprosthetic surgery. Chapters in part two discuss reconstruction
and rehabilitation whilst the final group of chapters analyse
tissue engineering applications.
This book by Madbak and Dangleben has collated lot of information
that has been presented and published in many disparate arenas into
a single easy to read source. In an area where there is more
experience and "favorite techniques" than true evidence based
answers, they provide a wealth of information along with
outstanding photographic support that makes this an excellent
resource for all surgeons caring for this population. Similar to
many things in life, when treating patients with the open abdomen
one size or methodology does not fit all and this book will
assuredly contain at least one possible answer to your patient's
problem. Although the numbers of "open abdomens" are decreasing due
to changes in resuscitation and transfusion practices, it still
represents a complex complication that can be challenging to deal
with. This ambitious textbook on the management of the open abdomen
provides a practical approach for addressing this complex problem.
One of the more unique aspects of this textbook is its detailed
"How to" approach for the wide variety of techniques utilized in
the management of the open abdomen. While there may be no consensus
as to what constitutes the optimal management of the open abdomen,
this book articulates a number of options and their advantages.
Most importantly, it provides high quality photographs that enhance
the step by step "How to" approach of the text. More recent
developments including using biologic mesh, implementing complex
abdominal wall reconstruction and utilizing minimally invasive
endoscopic techniques are described. This book is not only
appropriate for all practicing surgeons that deal with this complex
issue, but is also relevant for residents and fellows who are just
getting their first exposure to open abdomens.
As the surgical community steps up to tackle the global burden of
surgical disease in developing countries, Global Reconstructive
Surgery is the first reference of its kind to offer focused,
pertinent coverage of key areas surgeons need to understand to
fully participate in this endeavor. It provides authoritative,
real-world guidance on common surgeries performed around the world
to help optimize outcomes in difficult environments and for a
variety of conditions. Offers practical wisdom and experience from
surgeons who have lived and worked in challenging global settings.
The clear, organized format is based on the way clinicians examine,
prepare for, and treat patients in resource-limited circumstances.
Each chapter matches the clinical pathway and thought processes of
care delivery, from the clinical problem and pre-operative
assessment to operative intervention, post-operative care, and
possible complications and options for management. Covers
perioperative management, cleft and craniofacial surgery, hand
surgery, burns, trauma, and key techniques commonly performed by
surgeons across the globe. Includes the surgical steps of each
procedure, photographs of clinical cases, and surgical pearls for
resource-poor settings. Discusses alternative approaches related to
cultural considerations and unavailability of state-of-the-art
equipment. Ideal for plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists,
craniofacial surgeons. oral and maxillofacial surgeons, general
surgeons - both those who volunteer for surgical trips and those
training in local communities. Enhanced eBook version included with
purchase, which allows you to access all of the text, figures, and
references from the book on a variety of devices
Developed in the United States in the 1980s, facial feminization
surgery (FFS) is a set of bone and soft tissue reconstructive
surgical procedures intended to feminize the faces of trans- women.
While facial surgery was once considered auxiliary to genital
surgery, many people now find that these procedures confer distinct
benefits according to the different models of sex and gender in
which they intervene. Surgeons advertise that FFS not only improves
a trans- woman's appearance; it allows her to be recognized as a
woman by those who see her. In The Look of a Woman Eric Plemons
foregrounds the narratives of FFS patients and their surgeons as
they move from consultation and the operating room to postsurgery
recovery. He shows how the increasing popularity of FFS represents
a shift away from genital-based conceptions of trans- selfhood in
ways that mirror the evolving views of what is considered to be
good trans- medicine. Outlining how conflicting models of trans-
therapeutics play out in practice, Plemons demonstrates how FFS is
changing the project of surgical sex reassignment by reconfiguring
the kind of sex that surgery aims to change.
The skin is the largest human organ system. Loss of skin integrity
due to injury or illness results in a substantial physiologic
imbalance and ultimately in severe disability or death. The most
common cause of significant skin loss is thermal injury, followed
by trauma and chronic ulcerations. Over the past decades
extraordinary advances have been made in the understanding of
cellular and molecular processes of wound healing and the
pathobiology of chronic wounds. This knowledge has led to wound
care innovations that facilitate more rapid closure of wounds with
better functional and aesthetic outcome. A sensible and
resource-saving utilization of these innovative technologies
requires a broad knowledge of these processes and innovations. This
book intends to give an overview about today's wound care
developments in tissue engineering and skin replacement. It
presents a variety of indications and diversities of clinical
applications to help the surgeon select a specific procedure for
each clinical situation.
