Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery - Therapist Guide (Paperback): Robin F. Apple, James Lock, Rebecka Peebles Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery - Therapist Guide (Paperback)
Robin F. Apple, James Lock, Rebecka Peebles
R1,723 Discovery Miles 17 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Obesity has quickly become an American epidemic. People suffering from significant overweight often have to contend with a lifetime of significant comorbidities, social stigma, and lower quality of life. Recently, more and more people are undergoing weight loss surgery as a way to resolve these issues.
If you are working with pre- or post-operative bariatric surgery patients, your goal is to teach them the skills they need to ensure themselves a successful surgical outcome. After surgery, patients are required to adhere to a strict diet and the very specific recommendations of their surgical "team." Without a high level of commitment from the patient to follow these recommendations, the potential for maintained weight loss after surgery is very limited.
Preparing for Your Weight Loss Surgery, Therapist Guide contains a series of scientifically tested cognitive-behavioral techniques to help you prepare your patient for the post-operative challenges of creating radically changed eating and lifestyle habits. It provides instructions for teaching your patient basic problem-solving and cognitive restructuring methods that will change their negative thoughts and attitudes about food. Interactive forms including food records and checklists, body image journals, and homework assignments found in the corresponding patient workbook round out this comprehensive treatment package.

Operative Plastic Surgery (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Gregory Evans Operative Plastic Surgery (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Gregory Evans
R9,349 Discovery Miles 93 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The second edition of Operative Plastic Surgery is a fully-updated, comprehensive text that discusses the most common plastic surgery procedures in great detail. It covers the classic techniques in plastic surgery, as well as the most recent technical advances, while maintaining a systematic approach to patient care within each chapter. Traversing the entirety of the human body, each chapter addresses assessment of defects, preoperative factors, pathology, trauma, operative indications and procedure, and more. Also covered is the operative room setup, with special consideration given to the operative plan, patient positioning and markings, and technique for each type of surgery. Detailing over 90 specific surgical techniques, this book covers both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. A new section addresses non-invasive techniques such as Botox, injectables, lasers, and skincare. New chapters throughout the book also include ALT flaps, nasal cleft deformities, ZMC fractures, augmentation mastoplexy, body contouring for the massive weight loss patient, and endoscopic carpal tunnel repair. Led by Gregory R.D. Evans, this volume assembles thought leaders in plastic surgery to present operative surgery in a clear, didactic, and comprehensive manner, and lays the groundwork for ideas that we have just scratched the surface of, such as translational research, fat grafting, stem cells, and tissue engineering.

Dubious Equalities and Embodied Differences - Cultural Studies on Cosmetic Surgery (Hardcover, New): Kathy Davis Dubious Equalities and Embodied Differences - Cultural Studies on Cosmetic Surgery (Hardcover, New)
Kathy Davis
R3,321 Discovery Miles 33 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Dubious Equalities and Embodied Differences explores cosmetic surgery as a cultural phenomenon of late modernity. From its onset as a medical specialty at the end of the nineteenth century, cosmetic surgery has been intimately liked to discourses of 'normalcy,' as well as to gender, race, and other categories of difference that have shaped its technologies and techniques, its professional ideologies, and the objects of its interventions. Davis considers how cosmetic surgery is taken up in representations of cosmetic surgery in medical discourse and in popular culture, drawing on a wide range of cultural manifestations including televised 'infotainment,' popular music, performance art, surgeon biographies, stories of patients, public debates, and medical texts. Davis critically engages with the notion of cosmetic surgery as a neutral technology and shows how it is implicated in the surgical erasure of embodied difference.

Under the Knife - Cosmetic Surgery, Boundary Work, and the Pursuit of the Natural Fake (Hardcover): Samantha Kwan, Jennifer... Under the Knife - Cosmetic Surgery, Boundary Work, and the Pursuit of the Natural Fake (Hardcover)
Samantha Kwan, Jennifer Graves
R1,980 Discovery Miles 19 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Most women who elect to have cosmetic surgery want a "natural" outcome-a discrete alteration of the body that appears unaltered. Under the Knife examines this theme in light of a cultural paradox. Whereas women are encouraged to improve their appearance, there is also a stigma associated with those who do so via surgery. Samantha Kwan and Jennifer Graves reveal how women negotiate their "unnatural"-but hopefully (in their view) natural-looking-surgically-altered bodies. Based on in-depth interviews with 46 women who underwent cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance, the authors investigate motivations for surgery as well as women's thoughts about looking natural after the procedures. Under the Knife dissects the psychological and physical strategies these women use to manage the expectations, challenges, and disappointments of cosmetic surgery while also addressing issues of agency and empowerment. It shows how different cultural intersections can produce varied goals and values around body improvement. Under the Knife highlights the role of deep-seated yet contradictory gendered meanings about women's bodies, passing, and boundary work. The authors also consider traditional notions of femininity and normalcy that trouble women's struggle to preserve an authentic moral self.

Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields - Volume 3: Plastic Surgery Nerve Repair Burns (Paperback, Softcover reprint... Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields - Volume 3: Plastic Surgery Nerve Repair Burns (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)
Gunther Schlag, Jurgen Holle
R2,846 Discovery Miles 28 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These eight volumes, which developed out of the international congress "Update and Future Trends in Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields" held in November 1992, present the state of the art in fibrin sealing. Initially, fibrin sealant played an important role in surgery. During the past few years, it has been increasingly applied nonsurgically and we can now say that it has become an integral component of medical treatment. The doubts which have been raised by nonusers about the efficacy of fibrin sealant are no longer valid. The correct indication and technique continue to be basic prerequisites for effective treatment. Even today - 20 years after fibrin sealant was first used - the three most prominent effects of fibrin sealant are still hemostasis, sealing of the wound, and support of wound healing. The problems posed by the transmission of viral infections have gained sub stantially in importance because of the potential transmission of AIDS via fi brin sealant. Fortunately, this is so unlikely today that it no longer represents a cause for concern, which does not mean, however, that research in this field can be discontinued.

Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields - Volume 4 Orthopedic Surgery Maxillofacial Surgery (Paperback): Gunther... Fibrin Sealing in Surgical and Nonsurgical Fields - Volume 4 Orthopedic Surgery Maxillofacial Surgery (Paperback)
Gunther Schlag, Peter Boesch, Helene Matras
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the field of orthopedic surgery, additional areas of application and new indications have been discovered for fibrin glue treatment, for example, hemostasis in pseudotumors in hemophilic patients or in torn ligaments, and in spongiosa transplantation, primarily when nonautologous bone material is being used, or to fill large defects. In maxillofacial surgery fibrin glue is mainly used for osseous contouring of the facial and frontal bones, for alveolar ridge augmentations in preprosthetic surgery, and for soft tissue reconstructions.

Progress in Fibrin Sealing (Paperback): Hans-Werner Waclawiczek Progress in Fibrin Sealing (Paperback)
Hans-Werner Waclawiczek
R2,857 Discovery Miles 28 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fibrin plays a central role in wound healing. It has a hemostatic effect by forming a temporary wound closure and assists in neovascularization and fibroblast prolifera- tion. It therefore makes the repair of injured or severed parts of the human body by simple glueing possible, a notion that men have dreamed of since ancient times. The first modern attempts in this direction, using clotting substances derived from human blood to achieve hemostasis, were reported by Bergel (in 1909), Grey (in 1915), and Harvey (in 1916), who used fibrin powder or fibrin patches to control bleeding from parenchymatous organs. Two decades later Young and Medawar (1940) and Cronkite (1944) used blood plasma or fibrin solutions, adding thrombin to seal nerve anastomoses and to fix skin grafts in humans. Due to the poor adhesive strength of the fibrinogen the results were unsatisfactory. In 1972 a new era in fibrin sealing was initiated by Matras. By using highly concentrated fibrinogen in combination with factor XIII (fibrin-stabilizing factor) and by delaying fibrinolysis with a fibrinolysis inhibitor (aprotinin), a method was developed which after satisfactory results in animals, soon began to be applied in humans.

The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Paperback): M. Gonzales-Ulloa The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Paperback)
M. Gonzales-Ulloa
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the turmoil of everyday activity, when few surgeons have time or energy for bibliographic research, the wonderful history of human endeavor runs the risk of remaining buried in libraries. Several years ago, a small group of enthusiasts was gathered together by Mario Gonzalez-Ulloa to write the history of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There was the feeling among them that experience and knowledge should be shared by all those who practice this art and this science, and that its creation and progress would be alive and present with a chronicle of this surgical specialty. Their chapters have been written. These chapters have appeared in Aes thetic Plastic Surgery, but they are now collected in book form, and the individual style of each author has been preserved. It is a thrilling story. It is a compact information. Let it be our stepping-stone project in which past, present, and future are fused into one."

Implantate und Transplantate in der Plastischen und Wiederherstellungschirurgie (English, German, Paperback, 1981 ed.): H... Implantate und Transplantate in der Plastischen und Wiederherstellungschirurgie (English, German, Paperback, 1981 ed.)
H Cotta, A K Martini
R1,703 Discovery Miles 17 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

November 1979 in Heidelberg.

Fat Removal (Hardcover): M.M. Avram Fat Removal (Hardcover)
M.M. Avram
R2,928 Discovery Miles 29 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The perception of an inadequate body shape is a cause of concern to many people, and new techniques for altering body shape are increasingly being developed and offered to patients. Of these, the removal and transfer of fat is fast growing in importance and availability. This practical guide offers a comprehensive overview of this rapidly-evolving field, and thorough coverage of the implementation of fat removal techniques, both invasive and non-invasive, in a cosmetic practice. It begins with an overview of basic fat anatomy and physiology as an important introduction to this topic. The distinction between the physiology and treatment of cellulite and fat is also discussed. The next section of the book covers invasive treatments of fat such as traditional liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, fat transfer procedures and mesotherapy. The latter half of the book largely focuses on non-invasive treatments for fat, including radiofrequency, ultrasound, cooling and laser technologies for fat removal. Throughout, potential complications and pitfalls of the various treatments are discussed. Edited by Matthew Avram, with contributions from a group of clinical stars, this book will appeal to cosmetic dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aesthetic medical practitioners, and obstetricians/gynaecologists

The Look of a Woman - Facial Feminization Surgery and the Aims of Trans- Medicine (Paperback): Eric Plemons The Look of a Woman - Facial Feminization Surgery and the Aims of Trans- Medicine (Paperback)
Eric Plemons
R657 R611 Discovery Miles 6 110 Save R46 (7%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Developed in the United States in the 1980s, facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a set of bone and soft tissue reconstructive surgical procedures intended to feminize the faces of trans- women. While facial surgery was once considered auxiliary to genital surgery, many people now find that these procedures confer distinct benefits according to the different models of sex and gender in which they intervene. Surgeons advertise that FFS not only improves a trans- woman's appearance; it allows her to be recognized as a woman by those who see her. In The Look of a Woman Eric Plemons foregrounds the narratives of FFS patients and their surgeons as they move from consultation and the operating room to postsurgery recovery. He shows how the increasing popularity of FFS represents a shift away from genital-based conceptions of trans- selfhood in ways that mirror the evolving views of what is considered to be good trans- medicine. Outlining how conflicting models of trans- therapeutics play out in practice, Plemons demonstrates how FFS is changing the project of surgical sex reassignment by reconfiguring the kind of sex that surgery aims to change.

Male genital disorders represent a common issue in medical practice, especially in the dermatological setting. Correct clinical evaluation of these disorders is essential when addressing the diagnosis, which in some cases may require histopathological confirmation. Depending on the disease, early diagnosis may be not only lifesaving, but also of fundamental importance to the planning of successful treatment. This atlas introduces the most common penile diseases, along with more rarely encountered ones. It provides invaluable guidance on clinical diagnosis by highlighting prominent clinical features and presenting particular videodermatoscopy findings when these are indicative of the diagnosis. In addition, for each condition the most appropriate treatment is proposed, taking into account recent therapeutic advances of proven benefit.
