John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, commonly known as Mikel John Obi, John Obi Mikel or John Mikel Obi, is a Nigerian footballer, who plays as a midfielder for English club Chelsea and the Nigeria national team. Chelsea 2011-12 season Before the start of their league campaign, Mikel's father was abducted in his native Nigeria on 10 August; despite this, Mikel started in the club's opening fixture against Stoke City at the Britannia. Mikel came close to claiming his first Premier League goal for Chelsea in an inspired game as the sides played out a 0-0 draw in new coach Andre Villas-Boas's first game in charge. Due to Michael Essien's long term knee injury, Mikel found more playing time, but around Christmas time he lost his place to Chelsea's new signing Oriol Romeu. Following a run of disappointing fixtures including a catastrophic 3-1 loss to Napoli in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg and a 1-0 defeat to West Brom, Villas-Boas was sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. In both of these matches Mikel was an unused substitute for The Blues. Following the appointment of former Chelsea midfielder Roberto di Matteo, Mikel appeared in 16 of the club's last 20 games and started in 14 of them, and began to play some of his best football for the club. Mikel played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup final on 5 May 2012, picking up a yellow card in the 36th minute. The Premier League campaign saw Mikel appear in 22 league fixtures, starting 15 of them, as well as playing in eight fixtures leading up to the team's appearance in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. In the final in Munich on 19 May, Mikel played the full 120 minutes as the sides played out a 1-1 draw. Chelsea played a tough defensive battle and Mikel was hailed by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp as playing an excellent game putting in "in a performance that I didn't think he had in him; he was putting out fires everywhere," as Chelsea claimed a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout. Following his performance Mikel told reporters that it was "best night of our lives." Mikel's strong performances in the final stages of the season and his impressive display in Munich helped Chelsea secure Champions League football next season despite finishing in sixth place, knocking London rivals Tottenham Hotspur into the Europa League. 2012-13 season Mikel started all of Chelsea's first five games of the new Premier League Season, and also played in the Community Shield against Manchester City and Super Cup against Atletico Madrid.

Angel Fabian di Maria Hernandez is an Argentine footballer who currently plays as a winger for Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid and the Argentine national team. He is nicknamed El Angelito, Di Magia, El Flaco, El Pibito and Fideo, Spanish for noodle. Real Madrid 2011-12 season During the start of the 2011-2012 season, di Maria endured a tough series of matches as he struggled to adapt to the pace of the league following the summer break. As a result, di Maria's early performance for the season were mixed with moments of genuinely good play interspersed with moments of sheer madness by the Argentine. This point was well illustrated during Real Madrid's 1-0 defeat to Levante, a match which saw a clearly out of sorts di Maria commit a horror foul on Levante's Juanfran during the match. Di Maria caused the two teams to clash and an on-field incident ensued. After this, however, di Maria's performances improved, including opening up a significant gap at the top of the assists table. From October 2011, di Maria was being picked by Jose Mourinho ahead of Kaka and Mesut Ozil, a sign of his improving form. On 27 November 2011, di Maria played 60 minutes in a league game against city rivals Atletico Madrid, in which he scored a goal for Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho's team won the game 4-1. On December 3, 2011, Di Maria scored Real's first goal from a sharp angle in a 0-3 defeat of Sporting de Gijon in the La Liga. Playing style Di Maria is renowned for his ability to assist goals from his left-wing position, assisting 20 goals in his first Real Madrid season alone. He is known as a quick player and a very good dribbler. In the national team he has occasionally taken on a more defensively responsible role. In the beginning of his European career, Di Maria was not famous for his goal scoring, but improved this aspect of his game, scoring six goals in his debut La Liga season.

Andrew Thomas "Andy" Carroll is an English footballer who plays for West Ham United, on loan from Liverpool, and the England national team as a striker. Carroll started his professional career with Newcastle United in 2006, before spending a brief period on loan with Preston North End, during which time he scored his first league goal. He established himself as a regular in the Newcastle first team by 2008, and following Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League to the Championship in 2009, scored 17 goals in 39 appearances to help Newcastle finish first in the league, earning immediate promotion back to the Premier League in the process. He continued to play for Newcastle in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals in 19 appearances. Carroll signed for Liverpool on the last day of the transfer window on 31 January 2011 for a fee of 35 million, which to date represents both Liverpool's most expensive ever signing, and the highest amount ever paid by one club to another for a British footballer. Carroll was bought to replace Fernando Torres, who moved from Liverpool to Chelsea on the same day for a fee of 50 million, making Carroll the secondmost expensive player currently playing for a British club, behind Torres. An injury sustained in December delayed his Liverpool debut until March 2011, and he scored his first two goals for his new club in April 2011 in a 3-0 victory over Manchester City. In August 2012, Liverpool agreed a deal that would see Carroll spend a season-long loan at West Ham.
