Adherents of theosophy, the esoteric philosophy popular at the turn of the 20th century, believed that science and religion could be reconciled, and that the plan of the universe could and should be understood, and that it was humanity's duty to adapt to that plan. Here, in a series of lectures delivered in Sydney, Australia, in 1915, the renowned spiritualist Charles W. Leadbeater, a leader of theosophical thought, celebrates the new "sub-race" of humanity come to joyful life in the immigrant nations of America, Australia, and New Zealand, where, freed from the social shackles of Old World Europe, races and classes were intermingling to create a new kind of culture, which would in turn reshape the world. Far-reaching and perceptive, this is an extraordinary little volume of social insight and criticism.British author CHARLES WEBSTER LEADBEATER (1854-1934) was ordained as an Anglican priest, but later joined the prominent Theosophical Society and traveled to India to study alternative spiritual and occult practices, eventually settling into his life as a clairvoyant and author. His other works include Man Visible and Invisible and The Science of the Sacrament.

It must be recognized that a knowledge of the spiritual world, not merely a knowledge gained by treading the path, but also a knowledge acquired through grasping the truths of spiritual science with the unprejudiced, healthy human intellect, leads also to a higher moral status in life, to a knowledge of sensory existence that is in accord with the truth, to certainty in life, and to inward health of the soul.

Elephas Levi (the pen name of Abb Louis Constant, 1810-1875) was one of the leading occultists of the 19th century. For most of his life he was a Roman Catholic priest; even after he was defrocked in 1844, his views continued to have a strong Catholic influence. His books, translated into English after his death, were essential to the development of other occultists such as Albert Pike, Helena Blavatsky, A.E. Waite, and Aleister Crowley. "Paradoxes of the Highest Science" was the first of Levi's books to be translated into English. (The original French version was published in 1856.) This edition reprints the 1883 text issued by the Theosophical Society (translated by Anonymous) and includes the 1922 commentary by "an Eminent Occultist" (perhaps Helena P. Blavatsky). In addition to "Paradoxes of the Highest Science," this edition includes two more essays by Levi, "Synthetic Recapitulation" and "The Great Secret."
Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path is Rudolf Steiner's most important work. In it he explains the two aspects of free will: freedom of thought and freedom of action. This landmark book explores free will from a completely fresh and unique perspective. If an idea is to become action, man must first want it, before it can happen. Such an act of will therefore has its grounds only in man himself. Man is then the ultimate determinant of his action. He is free. -Rudolf Steiner

Each human soul has some message to give to every other human soul, and what Jinarajadasa writes in this little book is his message to W.H. just now. It is not Jinarajadasa's in reality, for it came to him from other human souls.

Annie Besant was born in 1847, and was a life long reformist, fighting for the causes of women, secularism, freedom of thought, birth control, socialism and workers rights. In 1889, she became involved with Theosophy, and after the death of Madame Blavastsky in 1891, she became a leading figure in the spiritual movement. These two books explain the interaction between the physical body, the mind, and the emotions, and the aura and the energies of the Universe.
The very rites and ceremonies of religion that are binding on the Soul that is still unliberated, become useless when the Soul has gained liberation, for then the Soul no longer can be held by anything. -from "Yoga" Anne Besant was one of the most popular and beloved voices of theosophy, the occult philosophy of the early 20th century that sought to find the underlying universal truths in all religions. Here she turns her theosophical eye on the traditions and beliefs of Hinduism, using the precepts of theosophy as a guide to understanding the obscurer meanings of Hindu sacred writings. Originally delivered as a series of lectures in 1893, and published in book form the next year, this is an illuminating exploration of Hinduism-and the fundamental essence of all religious expression-from a perspective almost forgotten today. British social reformer and writer ANNIE BESANT (1847-1933) was an early public advocate of birth control and women's health care, as well as an active proponent of theosophy. Among her books are The Ancient Wisdom (1897), Death and After (1901), and Occult Chemistry (1919).
