In the exhilarating second romantasy novel in Rebecca Robinson’s Dark
Inheritance Trilogy, a fiery couple forced apart must navigate a deadly
maze of politics and power to reunite across a continent at war.
Dancing at the End of the World is a sprawling collection of connected stories and lives that span a century of Berlin’s rich and complicated history. Beginning in 1933 amidst the rumblings of fascism and the demise of the Weimar Republic, and concluding in the fraught social and political climate of the present day, the collection weaves seamlessly through the defining years of the iconic city. From the first story, we are introduced to Klara von Arnsberg, the aristocratic daughter of a famed industrialist, whose fierce instinct for both survival and reinvention is a mirror for that of Berlin itself. The life—or rather, many lives—that Klara builds for herself over the decades to come, are ever entangled with the fate of the city as we bear witness to the Holocaust, the post-war years, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the ensuing years of dramatic transformation. As we move through the decades of the twentieth and twenty-first century, Klara is ever-present in the stories and the characters we encounter: Turkish guest workers in the 1960s and Syrian refugees in the twenty-first century, frustrated housewives in the new Berlin of money and rampant gentrification, Cold War Berliners hardened by unimaginable cruelty, expats in search of themselves, tech entrepreneurs who dream of immortality, and the lost children of the cultural revolution. All are linked to Klara, to her desires and fears, her greatest love, and the ultimate fate of both her legacy and the country itself.

Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

The Little Prince is a modern fable, and for readers far and wide both the title and the work have exerted a pull far in excess of the book’s brevity. Written and published first by Antoine de St-Exupéry in 1943, only a year before his plane disappeared on a reconnaissance flight, it is one of the world’s most widely translated books, enjoyed by adults and children alike. In the meeting of the narrator who has ditched his plane in the Sahara desert, and the little prince, who has dropped there through time and space from his tiny asteroid, comes an intersection of two worlds, the one governed by the laws of nature, and the other determined only by the limits of imagination. The world of the imagination wins hands down, with the concerns of the adult world often shown to be lamentably silly as seen through the eyes of the little prince. While adult readers can find deep meanings in his various encounters, they can also be charmed back to childhood by this wise but innocent infant. This popular translation contains the author’s own delightful illustrations, bringing to visual life the small being at the tale’s heart, and a world of fantasy far removed from any quotidian reality. It is also a sort of love story, in which two frail beings, the downed pilot and the wandering infant-prince who has left behind all he knows, share their short time together isolated from humanity and finding sustenance in each other. This is a book which creates a unique relationship with each reader, whether child or adult.

Stories do not have to be long. In the space of a couple of sentences - or even a page or two - we can see the human heart exposed in a way that is more powerful than in a novel. In Tiny Tales Alexander McCall Smith explores romance, ambition, kindness and happiness in thirty short stories that range in length from the short to the tiny. The settings are as diverse as the characters - Scotland, England, Australia, the United States - combining to create a rich and always surprising selection. An Australian pope?. A persuasive cosmetic surgeon? The world's laziest cat. A group of students living together and getting romantically entangled? All human and animal life is here - in miniature.
It's the nineteenth century. As America prepares for civil war, five men living within ninety miles of one another will change the course of history. The invention and refinement of the repeating firearm-the precursor to today's automatic weapons-means life in America and beyond will never be the same again. In this riveting work of narrative history, veteran reporter John Bainbridge, Jr. vividly brings to life the five charismatic and idiosyncratic men at the heart of the story: the huckster and hard-living Samuel Colt; the cunning former shirt-maker Oliver Winchester; the constant tinkerer Horace Smith; the resilient and innovative businessman Daniel Wesson; and the skinny abolitionist Christopher Spencer. As the men competed ferociously, each trying to corner the market for repeating weapons, invention and necessity collided in a perfect storm: America was crashing violently towards furious sectarianism, irrevocable tensions, and, of course, bloodthirsty war. Though capable of firing many times without reloading, astonishingly, the new guns faced a government backlash for using too much ammunition. Sold directly to soldiers, sometimes just as they were walking into battle, they quickly became coveted possessions, both during the Civil War and in the conquering of the West-and thus America's romance with personal firearms was born. Wide-ranging and vividly told, this is a gripping story of tenacity, conviction, innovation, and pure heartless greed.
For Landon Stackhouse, being called up from the Calgary farm team is
exciting and terrifying, even if, as the backup goalie, he rarely
leaves the bench. A quiet loner by nature, Landon knows he gives off
strong “don’t talk to me” vibes. The only player who doesn’t seem to
notice is Calgary’s superstar young winger, Casey Hicks.
