This book is about the self in contemporary Japan. The first book-length rhetorical history and analysis of the insanity defense. The insanity defense is considered one of the most controversial, most misunderstood, and least straightforward subjects in the American legal system. Disorder in the Court: Morality, Myth, and the Insanity Defense traces the US legal standards for the insanity defense as they have evolved from 1843, when they were first codified in England, to 1984, when the US government attempted to revise them through the Insanity Defense Reform Act. Throughout this period 'insanity' existed primarily as a legal term rather than a medical one; yet the testimony of psychiatric experts is required in cases in which an insanity defense is raised. The adjudication of such cases by courtroom practice is caught between two different but overlapping discourses, the legal and the medical, both of which have historically sought to assert and maintain firm disciplinary boundaries. Both expert and lay audiences have struggled to understand and apply commonplace definitions of sanity, and the portrayal of the insanity defense in popular culture has only served to further frustrate such understandings. Andrea L. Alden argues that the problems with understanding the insanity defense are, at their foundation, rhetorical. The legal concept of what constitutes insanity and, therefore, an abdication of responsibility for one's actions does not map neatly onto the mental health professions' understandings of mental illness and how that affects an individual's ability to understand or control his or her actions. Additionally, there are multiple layers of persuasion involved in any effort to convince a judge, jury - or a public, for that matter - that a defendant is or is not responsible for his or her actions at a particular moment in time. Alden examines landmark court cases such as the trial of Daniel McNaughtan, Durham v. United States, and the trial of John Hinckley Jr. that signal the major shifts in the legal definitions of the insanity defense. Combining archival, textual, and rhetorical analysis, Alden offers a close reading of texts including trial transcripts, appellate court opinions, and relevant medical literature from the time period. She contextualizes these analyses through popular texts - for example, newspaper articles and editorials - showing that while all societies have maintained some version of mental illness as a mitigating factor in their penal systems, the insanity defense has always been fraught with controversy.

Rhetorical Unconsciousness and Political Psychoanalysis investigates unintentional forms of persuasion, their political consequences, and our ethical relation to the same. M. Lane Bruner argues that the unintentional ways we are persuaded are far more important than intentional persuasion; in fact all intentional persuasion is built on the foundations of rhetorical unconsciousness, whether we are persuaded through ignorance (the unsayable), unconscious symbolic processes (the unspoken), or productive repression (the unspeakable). Bruner brings together a wide range of theoretical approaches to unintentional persuasion, establishing the locations of such persuasion and providing examples taken from the Western European transition from feudalism to capitalism. To be more specific, phenomena related to artificial personhood and the commodity self have led to transformations in material culture from architecture to theater, showing how rhetorical unconsciousness works to create symptoms. Bruner then examines ethical considerations, the relationships among language in use, unconsciousness, and the seemingly irrational aspects of cultural and political history.

Unter dem Rahmenthema "Emotionen" fand am 15./16. April 2016 auf dem Campus Gotland der Universitat Uppsala die 12. Arbeitstagung schwedischer Germanistinnen und Germanisten "Text im Kontext" statt. Der vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewahlte Beitrage, die in ihrer Vielfalt ein aktuelles Bild der Forschungsansatze und -projekte der Germanistik in Schweden vermitteln. Das Spektrum der Beitrage reicht von der Digitalisierung von Stammbuchern aus funf Jahrhunderten bis zur Analyse von Metonymien in den Medien, von Fragen des transkulturellen Erzahlens bis zu neuen Formen der Literatur im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung. Eine Untersuchung des Zusammenhangs von metasprachlichem Wissen und Grammatikkenntnissen bei schwedischen Deutschschulern rundet den Band ab. Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Angleichung oder Nichtangleichung (Akkommodation) verbaler und gestischer Metaphern zwischen Patient und Therapeut in der Psychotherapie. Den theoretischen Ausgangspunkt bildet ein kognitiv-linguistischer Ansatz: Unsere Wahrnehmung von der Welt, wie wir denken und handeln, wie wir uns auf andere beziehen oder uns anderen gegenuber ausdrucken - das alles beruht auf metaphorischen Konzepten. Die Autorin stellt vorerst die theoretischen Grundlagen vor und wendet die Theorie schliesslich praktisch an, indem sie ein Fallbeispiel gesprachsanalytisch untersucht. Als Fallbeispiel dient die Langzeitpsychotherapie einer Patientin mit einer Borderline-Problematik. Sechs audiovisuell aufgezeichnete Therapiestunden aus dem Beginn, dem mittleren Teil und dem Ende der Therapie werden im vorliegenden Band metaphernanalytisch untersucht. Zusatzlich fuhrt die Autorin bei einzelnen auffalligen Sequenzen eine gestische Metaphernanalyse durch. Die Arbeit liefert einen Beitrag an die Grundlagen- und interdisziplinare Forschung.

Este libro ofrece un analisis variacionista de la expresion verbal de lo futuro en el espanol de la comunidad de habla bilingue castellano-catalan de Valencia. Se investigan tres variantes: futuro morfologico, futuro perifrastico y presente prospectivo, y los resultados se comparan con los obtenidos en otras comunidades monolingues y bilingues del ambito hispanico. Junto a este estudio comparativo que permite conocer el paradigma alternante en el espanol de ambos lados del Atlantico, la obra aporta nuevos modelos para el tratamiento estadistico de los datos. Frente al programa empleado tradicionalmente en el Variacionismo, Goldvarb, se muestran las ventajas de Rbrul y del paquete SPSS; entre ellas, eliminar los knock-out y realizar analisis de regresion logistica multinomial. Tras identificar los factores internos y externos que estimulan cada marca temporal de futuro, se confirma el cambio en marcha favorable al futuro perifrastico y se corrobora el proceso lento de una doble gramaticalizacion: valor modal del futuro morfologico y valor temporal del futuro perifrastico.

Was sind verbale Indirektheiten und wie geht die DolmetscherIn mit ihnen um? Auf Grundlage a) theoretisch hergeleiteter Definitionskriterien fur eine translationswissenschaftlich/-praktisch orientierte Definition und b) authentischer Daten des Sprachenpaars Polnisch-Deutsch wird eine operationalisierte Definition erarbeitet: die 2-Komponenten-Indirektheit. Zur UEberprufung des Umgangs der DolmetscherIn mit dieser wird, aufgrund der spezifischen Gesprachsstruktur des gedolmetschten Diskurses, ein passendes Kommunikationsmodell hergeleitet: das Kommunikationsmodell der Dolmetschtriade. Die darin integrierte, schrittweise und systematische Bedeutungsbestimmung der Indirektheit sowie Reflexionsmoeglichkeit kann die DolmetscherIn zur Qualitatssicherung in der aktuellen Dolmetschsituation nutzen.

Welche Funktionen haben "kleine Woerter" wie Diskursmarker und Lautelemente in der Interaktion? Wo und zu welchem Zweck verwenden sie junge Frauen in Gesprachen untereinander? Die empirische Studie untersucht an einem Korpus von Alltagsgesprachen Deutschschweizer Gymnasiastinnen diese genuin mundlichen Phanomene. Als minim referentielle Objekte befinden sie sich an gesprachsorganisatorisch unklaren Stellen und bewegen sich in Bezug auf ihren Status zwischen Laut, Floskel und grammatikalisiertem Element. Die detaillierte mikroanalytische Untersuchung zeigt, wie damit in Kombination mit interaktionalen und diskursiven Verfahren verstarkt und gezielt Gemeinsamkeit in der Interaktion geschaffen werden kann. Theoretisch in der Soziolinguistik, methodisch in der Konversationsanalyse und der Interaktionalen Linguistik angesiedelt, findet die Arbeit Anschluss an interaktionale Forschungsrichtungen sowie an die internationale Jugendsprachforschung und zeigt neue Wege fur dialektologische Fragestellungen auf.

Die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes zu einer 2013 am Herder-Institut der Universitat Leipzig veranstalteten Tagung dokumentieren Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der linguistischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung an der Schnittstelle von Sprache und Kultur. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt hierbei auf dem Fach Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache. Dass bei der UEbertragung und der damit einhergehenden Transformation eine optimale Transferqualitat anzustreben ist, erscheint auf den ersten Blick als selbstverstandliche Forderung. In diesem Sammelband prasentieren AutorInnen aus verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen und Praxisfeldern grundlagentheoretische Beitrage sowie konkrete Erfahrungsberichte, die sich vor allem mit den folgenden beiden Fragestellungen befassen: Welche Faktoren bedingen den Erfolg, das Gelingen, die Effektivitat, die Effizienz oder kurz: die Qualitat eines Wissenstransfers? Este trabajo persigue profundizar en el estudio de la conexion discursiva en dos grandes niveles. Por un lado, se quieren proporcionar claves conceptuales que permitan arrojar alguna nueva luz a la cuestion desde enfoques que entendemos novedosos; a esta cuestion se dedica la primera parte de esta monografia (Fundamentos). Por otro lado, aspiramos a desarrollar una investigacion de corpus referida al uso de la conexion textual en la lengua escrita en dos tipos de usuarios: hablantes nativos y aprendices de espanol como lengua extranjera (Analisis). Es esta una obra colectiva resultado de tres anos de trabajo con textos reales, con corpus de espanol y de ELE, con gramaticas del espanol y con manuales de ELE. Con ella se ha querido aportar una nueva perspectiva al examen de la conexion en textos escritos: tal perspectiva deviene por un lado de la valoracion que de la conexion se ha proyectado en gramaticas del pasado, y por otro de la observacion paciente - y el subsiguiente analisis - del uso exhibido por nativos de espanol y por aprendices de nuestra lengua.
