Pedro is very poor. Yes, I can tell by the clothes he wears. I was
mad because somehow the way they were whispering, it sounded like
being poor was something very terrible. Meet six-year-old Pedrito,
who lives on a South Texas farm with his mother, father, and
younger sister. The year is 1941, and except for a trip to the big
city of San Antonio, five hours away, Pedritos life is the farm and
the school he attends in a village a few miles away. Pedritos
father has the papers he needs to work legally in the United
States, but that doesnt stop the Border Patrol from harassing him
and his son. Pedrito speaks only Spanish and is frightened on his
first day of school when he learns that he must speak English.
Luckily his teacher, Miss Garca, is patient with her students, and
soon Pedrito is sharing his new English words with his family.
Pedrito also relates his opinion of outhouses vs. indoor plumbing
and tells of a happy Easter decorating cascarones. ""Pedritos
World"" is a wonderful window on the lives and culture of a Mexican
family living and working in South Texas. Arturo O. Martnez based
""Pedritos World"" on his own South Texas childhood. He lives in
Hoboken, New Jersey.

A viral video reveals a teen’s dark family history, leaving him to reckon with his heritage, legacy, and identity in this fiery, conversation-starting novel.
Eran Sharon knows nothing of his father except that he left when Eran was a baby. Now a senior in high school and living with his protective but tight-lipped mother, Eran is a passionate young man deeply interested in social justice and equality. When he learns that the Houston police have launched a program to increase traffic stops, Eran organizes a peaceful protest. But a heated moment at the protest goes viral, and a reporter connects the Sharon family to a tragedy fifteen years earlier — and asks if Eran is anything like his father, a supposed terrorist. Soon enough, Eran is wondering the same thing, especially when the people he’s gone to school and temple with for years start to look at him differently. Timely, powerful, and full of nuance, Rafi Mittlefehldt’s sophomore novel confronts the prejudices, fears, and strengths of family and community, striking right to the heart of what makes us who we are.
In the companion novel to the beloved and award-winning Amina's
Voice, Amina once again uses her voice to bridge the places,
people, and communities she loves-this time across continents. It's
the last few days of her vacation in Pakistan, and Amina has loved
every minute of it. The food, the shops, the time she's spent with
her family-all of it holds a special place in Amina's heart. Now
that the school year is starting again, she's sad to leave, but
also excited to share the wonders of Pakistan with her friends back
in Greendale. After she's home, though, her friends don't seem
overly interested in her trip. And when she decides to do a
presentation on Pakistani hero Malala Yousafzai, her classmates
focus on the worst parts of the story. How can Amina share the
beauty of Pakistan when no one wants to listen?

But he's got strong feelings for a girl in his class, Brit - and she's not Korean. His friend Joy Song is in the same boat and knows her parents will never accept her Chinese American boyfriend, so they make a pact: they'll pretend to date each other in order to gain their freedom.
Frank thinks fake-dating is the perfect plan, but it leaves him wondering if he ever really understood love - or himself - at all.

Based on a real-life revelational experience that is described in
the substantial "Afterword" section, The White Horse teaches that
one should not judge another by superficial characteristics. In a
rural setting whose exact time and setting are purposely undefined,
a family of four young children and their parents rejects a horse
because of his skin color. The horse initially resigns himself to
his outcast status, but when the children find themselves in
danger, he emerges as a confident rescuer. The horse's heroic act
proves to the family, and to the horse, himself, that their
preconceived prejudices about him were, for many reasons, entirely
wrong.

child to see themselves in the books they read. What does a book
mean to those who search for acceptance and understanding? A place
to find friends, feel part of a family, or to be your true self. A
good book takes you to new worlds, the right one shows you can
exist in this one. So for all bookworms - lovers of books - the
world is waiting for you.
From the award-winning author of All the Broken Pieces and
Serafina's Promise comes a breathtaking new novel that is her most
transcendent and widely accessible work to date. The day Grace is
called from the slave cabins to work in the Big House, Mama makes
her promise to keep her eyes down. Uncle Jim warns her to keep her
thoughts tucked private in her mind or they could bring a whole lot
of trouble and pain. But the more Grace sees of the heartless
Master and hateful Missus, the more a rightiness voice clamors in
her head--asking how come white folks can own other people, sell
them on the auction block, and separate families forever. When that
voice escapes without warning, it sets off a terrible chain of
events that prove Uncle Jim's words true. Suddenly, Grace and her
family must flee deep into the woods, where they brave deadly
animals, slave patrollers, and the uncertainty of ever finding
freedom. With candor and compassion, Ann E. Burg sheds light on a
startling chapter of American history--the remarkable story of
runaways who sought sanctuary in the Great Dismal Swamp--and
creates a powerful testament to the right of every human to be
free.
