This practical resource will help K-6 practitioners grow their
literacy practices while also meeting the needs of emergent
bilingual learners. Building on the success of The Reading
Turn-Around, this book adapts the five-part framework for reading
instruction to the specific needs of emergent bilinguals. Designed
for teachers who have not specialized in bilingual instruction, the
authors provide an accessible introduction to differentiating
instruction that focuses on utilizing students' strengths,
identities, and cultural backgrounds to foster effective literacy
instruction. Chapters include classroom vignettes, teacher
exercises, illustrations of powerful reading plans for the student
and teacher, resources for culturally and linguistically diverse
children's literature, and tools to engage with students' families
and communities.
This book offers a tested method for teaching yourself to become
proficient in reading French, quickly building your vocabulary, and
enabling you to extract meaning without word-for-word translation.
If you have had two years of high school or one year of college
French, it will enable you to read with ease and enjoyment French
periodicals and newspapers, or works in your special field of
interest.
Designed for auxiliary use outside the classroom, the book
offers systematic training in those special skills and techniques
which promote efficient reading. It can be used independently by
the student who has acquired a modest vocabulary, and a rudimentary
knowledge of grammar and sentence structure.
"This book is not another reader, but rather a reading manual,
new in its approach, tested and tried in the classroom. It aims to
give systematic training in the skills and techniques necessary for
reading French--skills that are not taught by any of the usual
readers."--from the Foreword
Research shows that vocabulary is the best support for students'
comprehension of narrative and information texts. Often, vocabulary
instruction focuses on a few target words in specific texts.
However, to understand the many new words in complex texts students
need to know how words work. This book, written by an award-winning
authority on reading instruction, shows teachers how to make small
changes to teach more words and also how words work. Many of these
small changes involve enrichments to existing vocabulary practices,
such as word walls and conversations with students. Each chapter
includes descriptions of teachers' implementation of small changes
to support big gains in students' vocabulary. This book, which has
sufficient depth in research and theory for graduate and
undergraduate courses in vocabulary instruction, also offers
practical steps that K-8 teachers can use in any reading program to
help all students grow their vocabulary. Teaching Words and How
They Work shows teachers how to: Identify the most important word
families to teach. Teach students to use opening text as background
knowledge for comprehending the rest of the text. Use word walls
with more purpose and greater student engagement. Select the right
words to teach from new information texts. Better understand
limitations of leveled texts and how to adjust. Use assets and
address challenges to support English learners. Access free mentor
and teacher resources online at textproject.org.
Karl Barth (1886-1968) studierte Theologie in Bern, Berlin,
Jahrhunderts.
Faculty often worry that students can't or won't read critically, a
foundational skill for success in academic and professional
endeavors. "Critical reading" refers both to reading for academic
purposes and reading for social engagement. This volume is based on
collaborative, multidisciplinary research into how students read in
first-year courses in subjects ranging from scientific literacy
through composition. The authors discovered the good (students can
read), the bad (students are not reading for social engagement),
and the ugly (class assignments may be setting students up for
failure) and they offer strategies that can better engage students
and provide more meaningful reading experiences.
For use with the Test of Integrated Language & Literacy Skills
(R) (TILLS (R)) Examiner's Kit, the comprehensive TILLS Examiner's
Manual includes all the information you need to administer, score,
and interpret the 15 TILLS subtests. A copy of the TILLS Examiner's
Manual is included in the TILLS Examiner's Kit. The TILLS
Examiner's Manual is part of the Test of Integrated Language &
Literacy Skills (R) (TILLS (R)) the groundbreaking assessment
professionals need to test listening, speaking, reading, and
writing skills in students ages 6 - 18, and to assess the role of
memory in how students perform. Reliable, valid, and comprehensive,
TILLS will help you streamline assessment, monitor progress, and
reach your ultimate goal: improving students' communication skills
so they can succeed in school. TILLS is the only test that assesses
both spoken and written language and shows how these skills relate
to each other. You'll get a meaningful profile of skills for each
learner, so you can be sure you understand a student's strengths
and needs and aren't overlooking something crucial. Unlike most
other tests, TILLS also provides diagnostic accuracy in "age bands"
meaningful to the development of language and literacy skills, so
you'll have the evidence base you need to determine if test scores
reflect typical or impaired performance. And if you're an
experienced clinician, you can finish TILLS in just 90 minutes or
less-which means you'll spend less time testing and more time
helping students and planning interventions. Here is a link to a

Help students develop their own special talents and interests
while supporting student literacy, social development, and a
lifelong interest in reading through connecting books to children's
hobbies. Each of the book's 30 chapters focuses on a different
hobby through an annotation of a picture book in which the targeted
hobby has a key role. Jurenka further explores each hobby ranging
from bird-watching to tap dancing through a starter activity, a
language arts activity, a poem citation, a glossary of associated
vocabulary, references to related societies and associations, and
five annotations of nonfiction informational books. Not only will
students enthusiastically read about their chosen hobbies, they
will develop healthy lifelong passions for activities that
positively affect their social and intellectual development.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people had to cope with
isolation due to lockdown policies that forced them to engage in
fewer social activities. People were confined to the small space of
their dwellings and felt constrained and socially isolated and
deprived of meaningful social interaction and affection, which
caused stress and anxiety. Several initiatives were put in place to
help diminish the effects of isolation, such as those involving
literature either through writing or reading. Managing Pandemic
Isolation With Literature as Therapy explains the positive medical
and psychological effects of literature and writing during a
pandemic at a time when isolation prevented people from engaging
with others socially. Covering topics such as clinical psychology,
brain neurology, and stress, this reference work is ideal for
psychologists, medical professionals, policymakers, government
officials, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners,
instructors, and students.
