The WHO, WHAT, and HOW of Responding to Those Who Want to Silence
You You've based your understanding of today's sensitive social
issues on the Bible's truth. Mainstream culture not only sees these
issues differently but calls you bigoted for rejecting views
they've deemed self-evident. So how do you witness Christ's love to
those ready to write you off as hateful? Christians in a Cancel
Culture breaks down how you can speak wisdom about politically
charged and personal subjects with equal parts compassion and
conviction. This book will affirm your understanding of the Bible's
views on sin, salvation, racism, gender identity, homosexuality,
and abortion while teaching you... why today's world has grown so
hostile to Christians and biblical values where you can find room
to minister within challenging conversations how you can sustain
relationships with those who feel threatened by God's truth Walking
in faith isn't about fighting culture wars but witnessing Jesus's
restorative grace to those who haven't yet found it. Christians in
a Cancel Culture will prepare you to stay true to your beliefs as
you address today's controversies while opening doors to deeper
discussions about Christ's redeeming love.
If we are to believe many modern commentators, science has squeezed
God into a corner, killed and then buried him with its
all-embracing explanations. Atheism, we are told, is the only
intellectually tenable position, and any attempt to reintroduce God
is likely to impede the progress of science. In this stimulating
and thought-provoking book, John Lennox invites us to consider such
claims very carefully. Is it really true, he asks, that everything
in science points towards atheism? Could it be possible that theism
sits more comfortably with science than atheism? Has science buried
God or not? Now updated and expanded, God's Undertaker is an
invaluable contribution to the debate about science's relationship
to religion.
‘In the beginning was the Word,’ says the Gospel of John. This
sentence – and the words of all four gospels – is central to
the teachings of the Christian church and has shaped Western art,
literature and language, and the Western mind. Yet in the years
after the death of Christ there was not merely one word, nor any
consensus as to who Jesus was or why he had mattered. There were
many different Jesuses, among them the aggressive Jesus who scorned
his parents and crippled those who opposed him, the Jesus who sold
his twin into slavery and the Jesus who had someone crucified in
his stead. Moreover, in the early years of the first millennium
there were many other saviours, many sons of gods who healed the
sick and cured the lame. But as Christianity spread, they were
pronounced unacceptable – even heretical – and they faded from
view. Now, in Heretic, Catherine Nixey tells their extraordinary
story, one of contingency, chance and plurality. It is a story
about what might have been.
Denis Hurley was a courageous opponent of South Africa's apartheid
regime for 50 years, dubbed 'an ecclesiastical Che Guevara' by a
South African official and 'guardian of the light' by Alan Paton.
He was a champion of the reforms and 'spirit' of Vatican II, who
was controversial for his views on birth control, married priests,
and women's ordination. This new, abridged version of Guardian of
the Light tells the story of how Hurley became the youngest
Catholic bishop in the world in 1947 at 31 and archbishop of Durban
in 1952. His career as an outspoken opponent of apartheid began in
1951 when, as chairman of the Southern African Bishops' Conference,
he drafted the first of the groundbreaking pastoral letters in
which the bishops denounced apartheid as 'blasphemy' and
'intrinsically evil'. Along with four other church leaders
(including Desmond Tutu), he was regarded as one of the South
African state's 'most wanted' political opponents. He was arrested
in 1984 and accused of 'telling lies', but the prosecutor dropped
the charges when it became clear that Hurley would be able to prove
the truth of his statements. He continued to work as a parish
priest well into his eighties.
In The New Testament In Its World acclaimed biblical scholar N. T.
Wright draws on a lifetime of distinguished scholarship to provide
a thorough overview of the New Testament for students, church
leaders, and everyday Christians. Wright, along with prominent New
Testament scholar Michael Bird, explores the history, literature,
and theology of the New Testament with an emphasis on its relevance
for Christians today. Beginning with an overview of how to read the
New Testament, the authors then survey its historical background to
orient readers to the world of Jesus and the early church. This is
followed by an in-depth study of Jesus' inauguration of the kingdom
of God through his life, ministry, death, and resurrection. The
next section explores the life and theology of Paul, who continues
to unfold the significance of Jesus' life and ministry, and applies
these to the issues faced by the early churches. Wright and Bird
survey all of Paul's letters, providing a compact commentary on
each, while explaining contemporary scholarly discussions on Paul
and his teachings. They then turn to the gospels, written after
Paul's letters, followed by the general epistles and Revelation,
explaining the background, critical issues, important teachings,
and contemporary applications for each. This is followed by a
description of how the New Testament came to be, guiding the reader
through issues of textual criticism and canonization. A concluding
section brings all of the previous threads together to encourage
readers to consider how their personal story fits into the larger
story of God's redemption narrated in the New Testament. Students
of the New Testament will not only be equipped with all of the
technical information needed to understand the New Testament today
but will see it as one cohesive story in which they are invited to
play a vital role through their own lives and circumstances.
