Praise for Listen to the Whisper "The hand of God truly works in mysterious and glorious ways .... Somehow David Sample has written exactly what I needed to hear to truly be freed in the hope, promise, and possibility that was put in me by my Creator. Truth has a way of doing that." - Fran Wyatt, worship pastor, Willow Creek Chicago "David Sample has put together a wonderful, life-affirming collection of poetry in his book, Listen to the Whisper. ... There is not only wisdom in these poems, but also encouragement and reflection to ponder and be guided by. Read these poems not just with your head, but with your heart as well." - John Harricharan, speaker and bestselling author "For the past fifteen years I have traveled with David Sample as a companion through both darkness and light. His songs, poetry, and insights have all arisen from his efforts to chart a path through the wilderness we call life and to reconcile his creative passion with his everyday work .... His book serves as a guide for others, both those who are experiencing a depth of despair and those with a desire to deepen their personal spiritual journey." - James M. Thomas Jr., PhD, MDiv, Trinity Episcopal Church "David Sample's contribution to each of us through this book is no doubt inspired by God. I highly recommend that all of David's readers take time to Listen to the Whisper." - Jack McCall, founder of ACT Ministries

"The Life of God in the Soul of Man is a classic, written by an amazingly young yet mature in faith and highly qualified author. Discovering the truths in this book was fundamental to the Wesleys and their encouragement of the ministry of George Whitefield. Read it, struggle a bit with the authors seventeenth century English, seek to understand the Biblical truths of what Scougal is saying, and if you are not there yet, fervently pray, and ask the Lord of the Harvest, Jesus, for the wisdom, the knowledge, the faith which comes with being His servant and friend.

Writer, artist and architect Uzma Mirza shares her spiritual meditations in "Ode to my Architect, G_d," a unique collection of Islamic calligraphy, essay and verse. As a Muslim woman raised in the West, Mirza clarifies terms from the Quran, from architecture, science, music and art without lessening the intricacy and challenge of her material. She does this in the tradition of illuminated manuscripts, wherein radiant images accompany sacred thoughts, each supporting yet not duplicating the other. In the tradition of sacred writing, Mirza uses metaphors, similes and other evocative devices, often phrasing her spiritual thoughts in the language of music... "Essentially, each of us live on an harmonic staff (life) on which we can score notes to reverberate a symphony reflecting God's Attributes." It is her discovery of the divine in the most ordinary of actions: ... "seeing the greatness that surrounds us... in] the most minuscule of miracles, daily...reading the universe and drinking a glass of water slowly."
The untold story of how the First World War shaped the lives, faith, and writings of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis The First World War laid waste to a continent and permanently altered the political and religious landscape of the West. For a generation of men and women, it brought the end of innocence-and the end of faith. Yet for J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination. Had there been no Great War, there would have been noHobbit, no Lord of the Rings, no Narnia, and perhaps no conversion to Christianity by C. S. Lewis. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, Tolkien and Lewis produced epic stories infused with the themes of guilt and grace, sorrow and consolation. Giving an unabashedly Christian vision of hope in a world tortured by doubt and disillusionment, the two writers created works that changed the course of literature and shaped the faith of millions. This is the first book to explore their work in light of the spiritual crisis sparked by the conflict.

For missionaries in the twenty-first century, change is necessary in order for them to continue to be strong and viable. "Growing Missionaries Biblically" takes a fresh look at Christian missions and proposes a comprehensive, biblical missionary training program for short- and longterm missions. Its objective is to produce an effective, cross cultural ministry for Africa and, with some modifications, globally. The goal is to provide a postimperial, post-colonial model for training missionaries by looking to biblical guidance on the subject. Author Dr. R. Zarwulugbo Liberty is a native of Liberia, Africa, with biblical, theological, and practical insights for prospective and seasoned missionaries and their supporters. The information he provides can successfully launch and sustain these missionaries in the course of their mission work. In order to accomplish his goals, he proposes the use of bicultural missionaries. A bicultural missionary is one who has studied both his own culture and the culture of the people to be served. This missionary will not equate his or her culture with Christianity and will know and understand the practices of the culture he or she serves that can easily be incorporated and assimilated into Christianity. "Growing Missionaries Biblically" proposes a vital curriculum for missionary preparation for cross-cultural missionary service.
"So, also the account given by the dispenser of your words, which was to provide material for many future commentators, out of a small amount of words pours forth floods of clear truth. From them each man for himself may draw the truth he can attain." -Confessions of St. Augustine
Throughout the ages, our world has been drastically transformed by the creative pursuits of a few. Samuel Morse was the man who took us from sending letters by foot to pushing a button. David was the man who took the nation of Israel from being creative novices to world-class artists. Jesus was the man who taught many how to live meaningful lives, through the medium of storytelling. What do these men and many more have in common? They all boldly stated that that their good-ideas were God-ideas. KINGDOM: The Rise of the Creative Church explores the relationship between Christianity and creativity. In this book, we will go throughout history to retrace the footsteps of those who sought to change the world through creativity. KINGDOM: The Rise of the Creative Church poses itself as a summoning to the 21st century church, to cultivate godly inspiration and in force create a culture-shift in our modern day.

Sometimes it seems that nothing is more heretical than being orthodox. Westerners live in a world that celebrates rebels who step out of the norm and critique long held traditions and beliefs. In some cases, these rebels call attention to wrongs and abuses such as segregation and slavery, but there is a dark side to celebrating rebels. The ranks of those who rebel against traditional Christian beliefs grow increasingly vocal and proud of their defiance of God's Word. This is not a new phenomenon, but was noticed, documented, and critiqued in 1905 by G. K. Chesterton in his work Heretics. The eccentric Englishman employs his biting wit to expose heretics as wrong and dangerous. Although over 100 years old, Heretics is remarkably relevant to today's culture.
Icelandic Baroque seeks to approach the writings of Hallgrimur Petursson (1614 1674), Iceland's leading devotional poet, from a new direction. Hallgrimur is best known for his Passiusalmar, fifty hymns that contemplate the crucifixion and death of Christ, using a variety of meters and melodies; they have been sung in Iceland over Lent for many generations. This book offers a new evaluation of his poetry. First, seventeenth-century Icelandic literature in general, and Hallgrimur s works in particular, are set in the wider context of contemporary European literature, particularly from Scandinavia and Germany. Second, the influence of the poet s social milieu, both domestic and overseas, is explored. Third, Eggertsdottir explores whether and, if so, how aesthetic and literary theories of the baroque can enrich our understanding of seventeenth-century Icelandic literature. Her principal aim is to contribute to a reevaluation of Icelandic seventeenth-century literary history by applying new interpretative perspectives to works by leading poets of the period, most notably the iconic figure of Hallgrimur Petursson." |
