No previous research has ever explored thoroughly the types and
trends of smoking and the different models of tobacco smoking among
Palestinian children. This study was designed to identify the
factors that increase or mitigate risk associated with smoking
among school children and adolescents living within the Palestinian
territories. An ecological framework serves as the theoretical
framework for the study, incorporating multiple levels of
children's and adolescents' lives, including individual, family,
school, peers, and community dimensions. The study is based on
theory that considers the school as a central component of
socialization and also on problem behavior theory, suggesting that
humans develop clusters of dangerous behaviors that become part of
their daily lives. This research study is based on the data set of
the Health Behaviors in School-aged Children (HBSC) international
survey, and employed a dual focus on individuals and schools. It
revealed the high prevalence of tobacco smoking, the risk and
protective factors affecting smoking, and showed that Nargilah
ranked first among tobacco smoking habits. In an era of narrow
agendas of "effectiveness" and "control," this book suggests a way
to incorporate schools as venues and spaces for behavioral
transformation, growth, and positive change, and shows how
awareness can be created within the families and the relevant
agencies. Health promotion and risk prevention initiatives can help
control tobacco smoking, the most preventable cause of death and
disease in the nation. Those who smoke must quit, and we must work
together to prevent children from starting this endangering health
behavior.

twelve-year-old Diego and his family, home is a prison in
Cochabamba, Bolivia. His parents farmed coca, a traditional
Bolivian medicinal plant, until they got caught in the middle of
the government's war on drugs and were mistakenly convicted of drug
possession. Diego's parents are locked up, but he can come and go:
to school, to the market to sell his mother's handknitted goods,
and to work as a taxi, running errands for other prisoners. But
then his little sister temporarily runs off while under his watch,
earning his mother a heavy fine. The debt and dawning realization
of his hopeless situation make him vulnerable to his friend Mando's
plan to make big money, fast. Soon, Diego is deep in the jungle,
working as a virtual slave in an illegal cocaine operation. As his
situation becomes more and more dangerous, he knows he must take a

An interesting and socially-important psychological review of the
criminal archetype, that views the phenomenon of criminalized drug
addiction both from the inside, as well as from the academic
perspective. Offers a unique, fascinating and heartfelt glimpse
into the world of criminalized drug addicts, revealing both the
self-indulgence and the outgoing humanity of the puer and trickster
images that is so prevalent in the social order of this shadowed
underworld. Dr John Smethers takes us on a deeply personal journey,
looking at the root causes and effects of a sub-culture populated
by society's social outcasts. Drug addicts, alcoholics and petty
criminals are studied from the unique perspective of someone who
has not only 'been there', but one who has also successfully
struggled against the social and psychological forces that have
lead so many of our young men into hopelessness and despair. This
is a keen and insightful look into a little-known underworld which
we all, in one way or another, have helped to create.
"Funny and painful, it's a sharply etched portrait of fallible
human beings living, loving, screwing up, and making do."
--Publishers Weekly Sixteen-year-old Austin is always messing up
and then joking his way out of tough spots. The sudden appearance
of his allegedly dead father, who happens to be the very-much-alive
rock star Shane Tyler, stops him cold. Austin--a talented musician
himself--is sucked in to his newfound father's alluring music-biz
orbit. None of Austin's previous bad decisions, resulting in broken
instruments, broken hearts, and broken dreams, can top this one.
Witty and audacious, Austin is dragged kicking and screaming toward
adulthood in this hilarious, heart-wrenching novel.

and innovative new workbook that helps counselors, parents and
adolescents themselves deal with the challenges of teen addiction
and craft a realistic plan for change. The Adolescent Relapse
Prevention Planner" contains a variety of educational information,

used both for individuals and groups. The writing tone, as well as
the structure of the exercises, are geared to the teen level; the
entire process is designed to be intriguing, thought-provoking,
psycho-educational and even fun - making treatment and the recovery
process more personally empowering manageable and more achievable.

But now that Ginny is gone, sixteen-year-old Carrie finds herself within the orbit of Ginny's friends, a close-knit group of seniors who skip school, obsess over bands (not science), and party hard. Fed up with Carrie's behavior, her father enrolls her in a summer work camp at a local state park. Carrie actually likes the days spent in nature. And when she meets Dean, a guy who likes the real Carrie--astrophysics obsessions and all--she starts to get to the heart of who she is and who she wants to be.
