The Social Science of Sport - A critical analysis (Paperback): Bo Carlsson, Susanna Hedenborg The Social Science of Sport - A critical analysis (Paperback)
Bo Carlsson, Susanna Hedenborg
R1,424 Discovery Miles 14 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book questions about definitions and demarcations of sport science are discussed. Not the least the many normative ideas of sport as good or as bad are problematized in relation to the academic field. These ideas permeate sport science in ways that are not seen in other academic fields like history, sociology or law. In addition, if and if so, in what ways sport science influence social science in general. Does sport science bring new questions in relation to issues like "what makes a society possible" or "what is a human being"? This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games - Assessing the 30-Year Legacy (Paperback): Matthew Llewellyn, John Gleaves, Wayne Wilson The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games - Assessing the 30-Year Legacy (Paperback)
Matthew Llewellyn, John Gleaves, Wayne Wilson
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games stand as the most profitable and arguably the most important event in the history of the modern Olympic movement. Fresh off the back of the financially disastrous Montreal Games of 1976 and the politically controversial Moscow Games of 1980, the Olympic movement returned to the United States for the sixth time in an attempt to salvage the economic viability and global prestige of the Olympics. The Los Angeles Olympics proved to be both provocative and polarizing. On the one hand they have been heralded as an overwhelming, transformative success, ushering the Olympic movement into the modern commercial age. On the other hand, critics have repudiated the Games as a manifestation of commercial excess and a platform for western political and cultural propaganda. In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Los Angeles Olympics, this volume examines their legacy. With an international collection of contributing scholars, this volume will span a range of global legacies, including the increasing commercialization of the Games, the changing participation of women, the Communist boycott movement, nationalism and sporting identity, and the modernization and California-cation of the Games. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Sport, Race and Ethnicity - The Scope of Belonging? (Paperback): Katie Liston, Paddy Dolan Sport, Race and Ethnicity - The Scope of Belonging? (Paperback)
Katie Liston, Paddy Dolan
R1,060 R1,002 Discovery Miles 10 020 Save R58 (5%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Analyses of racialisation processes within and beyond sport would be incomplete without a consideration of ethnicity and ethnic identities. Why? Because ethnicity, as a concept and as a focus for research, captures better the diverse experiences of social groups and the scope of belonging. Ethnic identities contribute to the way race and racism is constructed and experienced in sport, and to the ways in which racial ideologies are created, recreated and contested. Readers will find here a stimulating array of papers that capture varied aspects of the sport, race and ethnicity nexus around the world. The journey stretches as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ghana and the USA and, in so doing, it draws on a range of disciplinary approaches that converge or diverge by degrees. Such diversity is to be welcomed in an academic field characterized increasingly by the potential richness of people's experiences of sport, race and ethnicity within various cultural contexts. Included here are papers from a range of disciplines and approaches including sociology, politics, sports feminisms, critical race theory, a strengths perspective, Kaupapa Maori Theory, history and sports development. This book was published as a special issue of Sport and Society.

Moral Panic in Physical Education and Coaching (Paperback): Heather Piper, Dean Garratt, Bill Taylor Moral Panic in Physical Education and Coaching (Paperback)
Heather Piper, Dean Garratt, Bill Taylor
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on sports coaching and sports teaching and how touching young sports participants has been redefined as dubious and dangerous. Coaches are constrained by a framework of regulations and guidelines which create anxiety, and many coaches now question the risks and benefits of their continuing involvement. The book includes some data from a recently completed ESRC project: ('Hands-off' sports coaching: the politics of touch) and builds on previous ESRC research (Touchlines - the problematic of touching between children and professionals) which illuminated tensions in touching behaviours between professionals and children in education and care settings. It considers the negative effects of particular understandings of risk and moral panic around touching and related behaviours where adults, children and young people interact, and makes a significant contribution to critical discussions around related practice, pedagogy, politics, and policy. While focussed on sports coaching and teaching, it is germane to the situation of all those acting in loco parentis. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport Education and Society.

The Value of Events (Hardcover): Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz The Value of Events (Hardcover)
Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz
R3,877 Discovery Miles 38 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Value of Events fills an important niche in the literature on events, being the first book to comprehensively deal with the subject of value creation and measurement, as opposed to impact assessment and programme evaluation. Value creation and measurement is often done routinely from specific perspectives such as tourism, event management, corporate marketing, or customer satisfaction. However, there exist a number of discourses on value and evaluation that have not yet received adequate attention, including the justification of governmental intervention and the costs and benefits of hosting major events. This edited book, written by an international group of academics with expertise in the relevant fields of events, tourism, sport and culture, offers new insight into events and their relationship to sustainability, social responsibility, cultural and social value. Fostering debate in the context of conceptual thinking, philosophising, multiple stakeholder perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches, it challenges the events industry, students, policy-makers and strategists with new perspectives on value, with implications for impact forecasting and assessment. This is a book for all students pursuing degrees in fields where planned events are important topics, while being of great interest to researchers, policy-makers, evaluators and organisers/managers of planned events. Within a subject in need of further attention, The Value of Events offers the most comprehensive overview of event value to date.

The Psychology of Teaching Physical Education - From Theory to Practice (Hardcover): Bonnie Blankenship The Psychology of Teaching Physical Education - From Theory to Practice (Hardcover)
Bonnie Blankenship
R4,335 Discovery Miles 43 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book weaves together theory, research, and practical information related to the psychological aspects of physical education. Unlike other exercise/sport psychology books on the market, The Psychology of Teaching Physical Education is written especially for future and practicing physical educators and focuses on the psychological principles and strategies that are most relevant to them. The book covers the important topics of motivation, reinforcement, feedback, modeling, prosocial behaviors/moral development, and self-perception. In each chapter, narratives about real practicing teachers show how they apply the principles and theories of psychology to physical education, and particularly to actual situations that readers are likely to encounter professionally. Each chapter contains three main sections: following an opening scenario in which Blankenship captures the reader's attention with a real-life problem, the author then (1) highlights theories related to the subject matter of the chapter, (2) summarizes the research that has been conducted on the theories and the chapter topic, and (3) gives examples of practical applications of the theory and research to physical education. Throughout the chapter, as the theory, research, and application of the topic are discussed, Blankenship presents possible solutions to the challenge presented in the chapter-opening vignette. The classroom applications and real-world examples are relevant to many different physical education settings, including those at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, in both urban and rural schools representing various geographical regions of the country. These examples bring the theories to life and help readers envision how their own classes will benefit as they apply what theyA ve learned about the psychology of teaching physical education. Key Features of the Book A theory-to-research-to-practice approach. An author whose background in both sport psychology and physical education makes her uniquely qualified to write this book. Chapter-ending application exercises that encourage readers to go beyond rote memorization of concepts and principles to apply what they learned in various specific examples. Sample instructional models and guidelines to enable readers to incorporate concepts discussed in the chapter into their own classes. A comprehensive glossary.

Coaching Children in Sport - Principles and Practice (Paperback): Martin Lee Coaching Children in Sport - Principles and Practice (Paperback)
Martin Lee
R1,835 Discovery Miles 18 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Children participate in sport at all levels, from school involvement to international competitions. With the growing concern about the mental and physical pressures which can be exerted on a child, the coach's traditional role is developing and expanding. They now need to be aware of the ways problems like depression, anxiety and sports injuries occur and how they can be prevented. This book has been written to fill the gap which exists between the theory and practice of coaching children. Academics (many with coaching experience) and practitioners have been commissioned to write on their specialist areas. The book contains clear, accessible information divided up into five parts: children in the world of sport; developmental changes in children; psychological aspects of participation; applications to the coaching process; and good practice in coaching. Within these parts, the theory behind the need for good communication, counselling, training, dealing with injuries and nutrition is given, along with examples of how to put these ideas into practice. This book should be of interest to sports coaches and undergraduates on physical education, sports studies and sports science courses

Femininity and the Physically Active Woman (Hardcover): Precilla Y. L. Choi Femininity and the Physically Active Woman (Hardcover)
Precilla Y. L. Choi
R3,874 Discovery Miles 38 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fitness boom of the last two decades has led to many people incorporating exercise into their lifestyles through activities such as jogging and aerobics. However, whilst many physical and psychological health benefits have been documented, far too few people actually take part in enough exercise to glean significant improvements, and this is much more a problem for women than men. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman explores one reason many women offer for their lack of involvement in sport and exercise - that they are not the 'sporty' type. Precilla Y.L. Choi argues that the 'sporty' type is masculine, and to determine how this notion might affect women's self-perceptions, she critically examines the experiences of women athletes, bodybuilders, recreational exercisers and girls' physical education. What emerges is the importance of visible differences between women and men, in terms of muscularity, strength and agility in order to maintain the gender order. Thus, if a girl or woman wishes to play the masculine game of sport she must do so in conformity with a number of patriarchal rules which ensure she is first and foremost recognised as a heterosexual feminine being. Contributing to a psychology of the physically active woman by examining women's experiences from critical feminist and gendered perspectives, Femininity and the Physically Active Woman will be of great interest to students, researchers, practitioners and teachers from a range of disciplines. Precilla Y.L. Choi is the British Association for the Advancement of Science's Joseph Lister Lecturer for 2000. She has co-edited, with Paula Nicolson, Female Sexuality (Prentice Hall).

Olympic Event Organization (Hardcover): Eleni Theodoraki Olympic Event Organization (Hardcover)
Eleni Theodoraki
R3,883 Discovery Miles 38 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Olympic Event Organization is the first text to address a number of important questions in contemporary mega-event management: Which organizations are involved in the Olympic Movement and in what capacity? What are the interorganizational flows of authority and finance between them? How is work grouped, in what unit sizes, how specialized and formalized are work processes? How complex, dynamic, diversified, or friendly is their environment? What are the power issues and how do the technological processes affect these organizations? How do the OCOGs evolve in their life cycle, what pressures shape their structures and management processes and how is work co-ordinated? The examination of the Olympic Games event organization in the 10-year period, from bidding to post-games closing down, draws material from host cities to explore the types of interorganizational flows that take place at various stages for the Olympic Games to be delivered. Knowledge transfer from one host city to the next and an established organizational field also means that management practises sometimes follow some externally imposed organizing logics. The challenges faced by organizers are discussed and the tensions that a strong management template from the IOC creates are also examined. Finally, the issue of sustainability of the Olympic Games is identified along with an analysis of the ways in which the concepts of impact are appropriated by the various stakeholders involved with the Olympic Games as they attempt to influence public opinion. Written in an accessible and insightful manner Olympic Event Organization is essential reading for both academics and practitioners alike.

The Ethics of Sports Technologies and Human Enhancement (Hardcover, New Ed): Thomas H. Murray, Voo Teck Chuan The Ethics of Sports Technologies and Human Enhancement (Hardcover, New Ed)
Thomas H. Murray, Voo Teck Chuan
R7,699 Discovery Miles 76 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume presents articles which focus on the ethical evaluation of performance-enhancing technologies in sport. The collection considers whether drug doping should be banned; the rationale of not banning ethically contested innovations such as hypoxic chambers; and the implications of the prospects of human genetic engineering for the notion of sport as a development of 'natural' talent towards human excellence. The essays demonstrate the significance of the principles of preventing harm, ensuring fairness and preserving meaning to appraise whether a particular performance enhancer is acceptable in the context of sport. Selected essays on various forms of human enhancement outside of sport that highlight other principles and concepts are included for comparative purpose. Sport enhancement provides a useful starting point to work through the ethics of enhancement in other human practices and endeavors, and sport enhancement ethics should track broader bioethical debates on human enhancement. As a whole, the volume points to the need to consider the values and meanings that people seek in a given sphere of human activity and their associated principles to arrive at a morally grounded and reasonable approach to enhancement ethics.
