The Science of Self-Hypnosis: This book is ideal for anyone; ranging from beginners who are new to the field of self-hypnosis, to experienced clinicians hoping to teach patients how to use self-hypnosis for therapeutic gain. Contained within this book are a range of methods for anyone to apply: to achieve a hypnotic mindset, develop hypnotic skills, induce self-hypnosis, deepen the experience of hypnosis, apply a range of evidence-based techniques and strategies for self-improvement and then exit hypnosis. The book offers a modern historical explanation of the development of this fascinating field as well as serving as a guidebook for practical application. All of this is done by dispensing with notions of an 'unconscious mind' or a 'special trance state', instead showing hypnosis to be an ordinary skill that anyone can learn, to be good at and derive benefit from. As the book title suggests, it adheres to research findings and the evidence-base available as much as possible while offering up a substantial literature review of this topic. The second half of the book looks specifically at applying self-hypnosis for stress management, anxiety reduction, depression, pain control and sleep enhancement; all showcasing techniques which can be applied to a range of other issues too. This is a comprehensive volume that aims to result in it's readers becoming proficient self-hypnotists. Adam ends his book with these words: That indeed is an exciting prospect
This book encompasses hypnosis, psychoanalysis, dream interpretation, word association, regression and interview analysis techniques that are years ahead of any other type of therapy ever created. It is a "one of a kind" book that has never been available before. It involves working with more than twenty thousand subjects over a forty year period and gives actual case histories involving the techniques that are taught within. This is "cutting edge" material It is absolutely essential for the sincere student and practicing professional as well.
Foreword By Dewey Kelley And Hornell Hart.
A cognitive science perspective on scientific development, drawing on philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and computational modeling. Many disciplines, including philosophy, history, and sociology, have attempted to make sense of how science works. In this book, Paul Thagard examines scientific development from the interdisciplinary perspective of cognitive science. Cognitive science combines insights from researchers in many fields: philosophers analyze historical cases, psychologists carry out behavioral experiments, neuroscientists perform brain scans, and computer modelers write programs that simulate thought processes. Thagard develops cognitive perspectives on the nature of explanation, mental models, theory choice, and resistance to scientific change, considering disbelief in climate change as a case study. He presents a series of studies that describe the psychological and neural processes that have led to breakthroughs in science, medicine, and technology. He shows how discoveries of new theories and explanations lead to conceptual change, with examples from biology, psychology, and medicine. Finally, he shows how the cognitive science of science can integrate descriptive and normative concerns; and he considers the neural underpinnings of certain scientific concepts.

There is no doubt that hypnotism is a very old subject, though the name was not invented till 1850. In it was wrapped up the mysteries of Isis in Egypt thousands of years ago, and probably it was one of the weapons, if not the chief instrument of operation, of the magi mentioned in the Bible and of the wise men of Babylon and Egypt. Laying on of hands must have been a form of mesmerism, and Greek oracles of Delphi and other places seem to have been delivered by priests or priestesses who went into trances of self-induced hypnotism. It is suspected that the fakirs of India who make trees grow from dry twigs in a few minutes, or transform a rod into a serpent (as Aaron did in Bible history), operate by some form of hypnotism. The people of the East are much more subject to influences of this kind than Western peoples are, and there can be no question that the religious orgies of heathendom were merely a form of that hysteria which is so closely related to the modern phenomenon of hypnotism. Though various scientific men spoke of magnetism, and understood that there was a power of a peculiar kind which one man could exercise over another, it was not until Frederick Anton Mesmer (a doctor of Vienna) appeared in 1775 that the general public gave any special attention to the subject. In the year mentioned, Mesmer sent out a circular letter to various scientific societies or Academies as they are called in Europe, stating his belief that "animal magnetism" existed, and that through it one man could influence another. No attention was given his letter, except by the Academy of Berlin, which sent him an unfavorable reply.

Researchers from the Budapest Hypnosis Laboratory approach hypnosis as an interactional process, a special encounter between hypnotist and subject. That means that not only the subject but the hypnotist is also studied at a multilevel approach. Katalin Varga and her colleagues extended the concept of interactional synchrony to the phenomenological data. In this book, methodological developments and results are presented, as are special techniques of eliciting subjective reports, paper/pencil tests suitable for interactional use, and ways to analyse interrelating phenomenological data. The special possibilities of the interactional approach of phenomenological data are exemplified by recent empirical results, including non-hypnotic interactions. All of these empirical results seem to add special new possibilities to the understanding of hypnosis in particular, and human dyadic interactions in general. The book encourages researchers to follow this interactional approach and methodology. Though the book is based on experimental hypnosis sessions with healthy volunteers, but many clinical implications and clinically relevant findings are also presented.
Decomposing The Shadow presents a psychological model for the experience of the magic psilocybin mushroom. It explores what the experience of this psychedelic medicine exposes to us about the nature of mind, emotion, society, psychospiritual maturity, and reality itself. This book is about facing the darkness within each of us, developing the courage of emotional honesty, and investigating how the unacknowledged aspects of self, the shadow, can make the grounds of personal growth fertile again. The psilocybin mushroom offers us the opportunity to experience life from a point of amplified emotional, psychological, and spiritual significance. It unlocks a perspective of self and other that is naturally occurring within us, but culturally suppressed to the point of nearly complete omission. When we begin to navigate the vastly novel experiences this substance can provide us, we further enable its potential for not only exposing, but healing the unconscious narratives that hold us back from being our fullest, most courageous, most honest self.
An investigation into the conceptual foundations of a new way of thinking about the mind that does not locate all cognition "in the head." There is a new way of thinking about the mind that does not locate mental processes exclusively "in the head." Some think that this expanded conception of the mind will be the basis of a new science of the mind. In this book, leading philosopher Mark Rowlands investigates the conceptual foundations of this new science of the mind. The new way of thinking about the mind emphasizes the ways in which mental processes are embodied (made up partly of extraneural bodily structures and processes), embedded (designed to function in tandem with the environment), enacted (constituted in part by action), and extended (located in the environment). The new way of thinking about the mind, Rowlands writes, is actually an old way of thinking that has taken on new form. Rowlands describes a conception of mind that had its clearest expression in phenomenology-in the work of Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty. He builds on these views, clarifies and renders consistent the ideas of embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended mind, and develops a unified philosophical treatment of the novel conception of the mind that underlies the new science of the mind.

Complete Hypnotism: Mesmerism, Mind-Reading and Spiritualism How to Hypnotize: Being an Exhaustive and Practical System of Method, Application, and Use by A. Alpheus ZHINGOORA BOOKS]
The idea of a disjunctive theory of visual experiences first found expression in J.M. Hinton's pioneering 1973 book Experiences. In the first monograph in this exciting area since then, William Fish develops a comprehensive disjunctive theory, incorporating detailed accounts of the three core kinds of visual experience-perception, hallucination, and illusion-and an explanation of how perception and hallucination could be indiscriminable from one another without having anything in common. In the veridical case, Fish contends that the perception of a particular state of affairs involves the subject's being acquainted with that state of affairs, and that it is the subject's standing in this acquaintance relation that makes the experience possess a phenomenal character. Fish argues that when we hallucinate, we are having an experience that, while lacking phenomenal character, is mistakenly supposed by the subject to possess it. Fish then shows how this approach to visual experience is compatible with empirical research into the workings of the brain and concludes by extending this treatment to cover the many different types of illusion that we can be subject to. |
