Prolific author Justo Gonzalez takes us deeper into the idea that the Acts of the Apostles is really the Acts of the Holy Spirit. He inserts the text into its social context, discussing each verse in terms of its social, spiritual, and theological implications. This is a commentary ideally suited both to illuminating the book of Acts and to attuning readers to the on-going acts of the Spirit in our own time.
This introduction to the interpretation of Matthew aims to encourage in-depth study of the text, and genuine grappling with the theological and historical questions raised, by providing a 'map' to the Gospel as a whole, and to key interpreters and interpretative debates.
The
NIV Jesus Everywhere Bible - Gather Edition is the ideal outreach Bible
with added resources to invite those new to reading the Bible to learn
about God and his invitation for all people to find freedom and eternal
life through his Son, Jesus.
Third volume of the long-awaited translation of one of Augustines classics and a great work in Christian literature. Newly translated by Maria Boulding, O.S.B., whose masterful translation of Augustines Confessions in the same series has been praised as being of a different level of excellence from practically anything else in the market (Bishop Rowan Williams, Monmouth, England). As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. They recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustines personal life, his theological reflections, and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo.

For a hundred years, the million dollar question has been, What was the nature and state of the tradition between Jesus and the gospels? Eve surveys the major proposals, offers critical and constructive commentary, and makes appropriately nuanced suggestions of his own. On this topic, his work is now the place to start' Dale C. Allison, Jr. Professor of New Testament, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary 'Eric Eve has written a magnificent guide to one of the most exciting areas in Gospels studies today - oral tradition and memory theory. With clear writing and judicious assessment, he covers the important personalities and ideas in the search to get behind the Gospels, from form criticism to the present. I highly recommend this book to scholars and students alike' Chris Keith, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, St Mary's University College, London 'Eric Eve gives a balanced and lucid account of all attempts to reconstruct the oral tradition behind the written Gospels . . . Eve's judgments on these questions are fair, his arguments convincing. This is a foundational book both for Jesus research and for our understanding of the literary history of the New Testament' Gerd Theissen, Professor Emeritus of New Testament, University of Heidelberg.
To follow Jesus we have to learn to think inside out, in looking-glass fashion: what the world counts as great is foolishness, and what the world counts as folly is the true wisdom. Cling on to your life and you'll lose it; give everything you've got to following Jesus, including life itself, and you'll win it. In every generation there are, it seems, a few people who are prepared to take Jesus seriously, at his word. What would it be like if you were one of them?
Encounter the Heart of God.

Every Sunday, the Lord's Prayer echoes in every Church around the world. It is an indispensable element of the faith. It is the way Jesus taught his followers to pray, and encapsulates the essential beliefs and attitudes to which all Christians aspire. Here, John Dominic Crossan, one of the world's leading experts on Jesus and his times, explores this foundational prayer line by line. This is quintessential Crossan, providing just the right amount of historical detail and literary insight to enhance our understanding, and drawing out the enduring richness and relevance of Jesus' words for today.
The books of 1 and 2 Samuel vividly describe the passing of the age of the judges and the founding of the Israelite monarchy. We read of the rise and rule of Samuel, the last and greatest of the judges, and his role in establishing Saul and, later, David as kings over Israel. The wars, deceptions, victories, friendship, intrigue, rivalry, jealousy, and (for David) adultery and family discord that marked the reigns of these two men ensure that 1 and 2 Samuel are among the most readable - and relevant - books of the Old Testament. Using personal anecdote, a witty and lively style, and drawing on his considerable theological knowledge, John Goldingay takes us deep into the unfolding story of the Old Testament.
Who are the people of God? Cowardly, contemptuous, distrustful, whining ingrates? Are those the words that spring to mind when you think of a people set apart and named holy by God? Hardly. And yet that is what the book of Numbers shows the people of God to be. Even so, God continues to be faithful to the unfaithful. He chastens them, protects them and continues to invest in them, allowing them to mature, over a period of forty years, into a hardy, trusting, courageous community of warriors ready to take the land he's promised them. The sermons of Deuteronomy are preached on the eve of a confident and holy Israel's entry into the Promised Land. Moses reminds God's people of what they have been through, what's expected of them, what they can expect of God and what will happen in the future, depending on the choices they make. Most of all, he exhorts Israel to love and serve the Lord their God with all their heart, soul and strength, so that they will not only survive but thrive in their land. Using personal anecdote, a witty and lively style, and drawing on his considerable theological knowledge, John Goldingay takes us deep into the unfolding story of the Old Testament. And, as he guides us in our understanding of these time-honoured words and the ancient world they describe, he helps us to apply what we read to our lives.
Isabel has walked in a faith Covenant relationship with the LORD, for approximately thirty years. In 1979 God called her to give up her work in the secular world, sell all that she owned and go to the Philippines. She was led into the mountain regions of Kalinga Apayao, to preach the gospel to the headhunting tribal people. The LORD worked with her confirming the preaching of His Word, with miraculous signs and wonders. This is recorded in her latest book, "THE MESSAGE TO THE CHURCH". She is also the author of Arise and Reap, Reaping with Joy and Come out of her, my People. In January 2000, Isabel returned to the Philippines on her fifth ministry mission. She was told by the Lord, to build and oversee a work which was to be named "Covenant Keepers", as the Lord desired to raise up a body of people who would walk in a faith Covenant relationship with Him. All was accomplished by the Lord's leading and provision. The Lord taught us that He is the Covenant keeping God, who has redeemed His saints from the curse of the law (Gal. 13:3).The curse of the law is sickness, pain, disease, suffering, poverty and the second death, which is eternal damnation in the lake of fire and brimstone (Duet. 28:15-61 & Rev. 21:8). In the Everlasting Covenant agreement which is sealed with the holy redeeming blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, God has freely provided forgiveness of sin, eternal life, imputed righteousness, divine provision, divine protection, and divine health for His redeemed saints. To walk in all the blessings of the Everlasting Covenant, we must first understand what blessings were freely provided in the Atonement in the Lord Jesus Christ, and take the blessings by faith. As you apply the teaching in this manual, you will learn to be a Covenant keeper, who will walk in all the blessings of the Everlasting Covenant.

A series of short, question-based study guides based around the New Testament For Everyone series. The series is intended to encourage church (and other) groups to study the Bible using the For Everyone model. Experienced Bible study writers have selected excerpts and written questions that guide users through the thought of Tom Wright on each passage. These have been reviewed, edited and approved by Tom Wright. Creation is in anguish. Paul's letter to the Romans, as well as the merest glance at our world, shows this clearly. The Church shares in the suffering, groaning in the tension between the 'already' of possessing the fruit of the Spirit and the 'not yet' of our present existence. Paul, however, also makes it abundantly clear that God doesn't stand apart from the pain. Rather, he entered it through Jesus and dwells in the middle of it in the Spirit. These studies present the whole picture of a suffering, sinful world and God's deep love, still working today to reconcile that world to himself. |
