In 1971, my family of four left the bustle of the city for the
suburbs of Long Island where we discovered the world of garage
sales and flea markets. Before long we were a part of the action,
creating "Happy Days," a 30-year family business entailing the
buying and selling of antique and collectible toys.
We never thought that our middle class suburban family would
traverse the United States and the globe encountering humorous and
surprising situations wherever we went. After all, who would
suspect that something as innocent as selling children's playthings
would lead to dealing with mobsters, actors, dreamers, schemers and
at least one murderer?!

PEZ made it OK to play with your food, and now those imaginative,
colorful candy dispensers are sought after by collectors worldwide.
After PEZ candy and dispensers were brought to the United States in
1952, more than 250 different types of character heads were made.
Licensed cartoon characters, movie and TV personalities, and
original designs are divided chronologically into five series,
usually indicated by patent dates on the dispensers. In this newly
revised and expanded edition, most of the variations of PEZ
dispensers are shown in 281 color photographs, as well as the
premiums and store displays that helped sell them. The captions
identify each item and give the current estimated values.
In 1997 sixty-two containers fell off the cargo ship Tokio Express
after it was hit by a rogue wave off the coast of Cornwall,
including one container filled with nearly five million pieces of
Lego, much of it sea themed. In the months that followed,
beachcombers started to find Lego washed up on beaches across the
south west coast. Among the pieces they discovered were octopuses,
sea grass, spear guns, life rafts, scuba tanks, cutlasses, flippers
and dragons. The pieces are still washing up today.
This great reference features over 650 color photographs showing
details of individual houses, several hundred pieces of furniture
made of metal, wood, paper and plastic, and delightful full sets.
Thoroughly researched information is provided for more than one
hundred dollhouses, which date from 1900 to 1990 and range in size
from the miniature Marx Newlywed model to the large Mego Walton
Farmhouse. The biggest names in dollhouse manufacture are well
represented -- from Bliss, Converse, and Schoenhut to Strombecker,
Kilgore, Tootsietoy, Built-Rite, Renwal, Ideal, Plasco, Marx and
many others. The book also includes a list of sources for securing
dollhouses and furniture, addresses of publications in the field,
and a comprehensive price guide.
What child hasn't dreamed of a big red fire engine under the
Christmas tree or been fascinated by the sights and sounds of
firefighters hustling off to a fire? The desire of children to be
close to firefighters has kept toy manufacturers busy over many
decades making fire-themed toys that filled children with wonder.
As adults, those same children delight in collecting the colorful
and exciting toys that so enriched their early years. Presented
here, in nearly 600 color photos, are the best and most highly
collected firefighting toys from the second half of the twentieth
century. Fire engines, fire chiefs' cars, firehouses, fireboats,
firemen -- if it has the word "fire" in it, you're sure to find it
here! Organized alphabetically by manufacturer, the comprehensive
lineup includes toys from Buddy L, Corgi, Fisher-Price, Hubley,
Keystone, Marx, Mattel, Nylint, Remco, Structo, Tonka, Tootsietoy,
and many more. Also featured are tips on what to collect, places to
find firefighting toys, detailed descriptions, and up-to-date
pricing information. A treat for "grown up" children everywhere!

The invention of the telegraph, telephone, and broadcast signals
gave kids in mid-20th-century America a new way to play. Speak into
a device, push a button, turn a knob, and you were instantly
communicating with friends around the block or across the planet.
In most cases, it was imaginary, but adults were actually doing
it-and with the right "equipment," you were too! The 150 color
images in Do You Read Me? Vintage Communication Toys captures the
excitement of these new technologies. The art deco and futuristic
designs from the '30s through the '70s convey the wonder and
optimism of the ever-evolving communication world. String and wire
may have carried the signal, but it was the power of imagination
that really carried the message. Toy collectors, nostalgia buffs,
and retro-future fans will appreciate the price guide and
build-it-yourself communicator included with this beautifully
photographed and designed volume.

Although the name "Corgi Toys" was not introduced until 1955, the
roots of the original holding company, Mettoy, go back to 1932 when
a German toymaker called Philipp Ullmann arrived in Britain to form
a new toy manufacturing company. This company produced many types
of toys, both before and after the Second World War, mainly in
tinplate.
In the 1950s Mettoy began to produce diecast metal toys and hence,
in 1956 the first Corgi Toys were released to the children's toy
market and proved an immediate success. Over the next 30 years
hundreds of miniature vehicles would be modeled on contemporary
vehicles such as Vauxhalls, Rileys, Hillmans, Standards, Commers
and ERFs. Corgi also made daring and successful ventures into
film-and-TV related toys with their versions of James Bond, The
Saint and Batmobile cars selling millions. Life-long collector
David Cooke explores the history of Corgi Toys, describing the
various models and illustrating how these simple children's toys
became valuable collectables. He also charts the recent financial
problems faced by the company, and their resurgence based upon
Limited Edition collectors' models sold direct to an adult market.
