Model engineering is generally considered to be a man thing, as men
in sheds everywhere don overalls and shape metal into models. But
arguably the world's greatest model engineer, Cherry Hill, is, in
fact, a woman. And the word 'models' hardly does justice to what
she produces. For the past several decades Cherry has created
scaled-down versions of traction engines - and not just
run-of-the-mill types, but elaborate Victorian flights of fancy.
Extensive research and meticulous design are the secrets of her
success. She has created almost twenty models over the sixty-year
period since her father gave her an old lathe from the workshop of
his agricultural machinery business. One of the most impressive
aspects of Cherry's work is that all her engines are fully working
and what comes out of her workshops in Worcestershire and Florida
is perfection, both in terms of design and craftsmanship. Every
last part, even tiny chain links, is made in the workshop from
metal stock. No parts are bought in. Once completed, all her models
are given away: early ones to friends and family and later ones to
the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Each model typically
occupies 7,000 hours' work, and Cherry's staggering efforts have
been rewarded with the highest honours, including nine gold medals
and an MBE from the Queen for Services to Model Engineering. Here,
for the first time, the fruits of her illustrious career are
displayed in all their intricate glory for your inspiration and
enjoyment.

Dinky Toys must be one of the most successful and collectable toys
ever made. These delightfully stylish photographs feature models
from the golden age of the Dinky toy - an era that will be
remembered fondly by every post-war baby-boomer, both men and
women. Now the subject of serious interest from collectors
worldwide many of these models have re-emerged as highly
collectable, often selling at very high prices. But the toys that
feature here are neither pristine or shiny. Collected over the
years by photographer Kim Sayer, their charm is in the chips, dents
and worn paint work - toys that have been played with and loved.
His affection for them is obvious, as each model is given its own
delightful setting, reflecting a more gentle and innocent
era.Visual puns abound - the Landrover, "a fine model of a vehicle
designed to go anywhere and do anything" climbs its way up a
staircase, whilst the Avro York Airliner takes off from the ironing
board, and an open-top sports car zooms along fighting the gale
force winds of an electric fan. Many of the photographs also play
off against the original marketing tagline used to sell the models:
'Just look at the remarkable detail on this exciting model of
Britain's famous centurion tank. It is a welcome reinforcement for
the playroom army.' 'Here is a fine new model, the Humber Police
Patrol Car containing uniformed driver and patrolman.' These are
wonderful photographs that will appeal to all ages - particularly
to those who will remember their days of short trousered bliss
crawling about on the floor for hours on end, their imaginations
fired by the splendour of their Dinky toys.
In 1997 sixty-two containers fell off the cargo ship Tokio Express
after it was hit by a rogue wave off the coast of Cornwall,
including one container filled with nearly five million pieces of
Lego, much of it sea themed. In the months that followed,
beachcombers started to find Lego washed up on beaches across the
south west coast. Among the pieces they discovered were octopuses,
sea grass, spear guns, life rafts, scuba tanks, cutlasses, flippers
and dragons. The pieces are still washing up today.

Images of bears are found throughout the world on many objects in
everyday life, from advertising and postage stamps to clothing and
tablewares. The intense popularity of stuffed toy Teddy Bears today
has ignited the search for images of bears on antiques, in old
books, and upon modern items--and many are displayed and identified
here. The chapters present old and new images of bears made as both
useful and decorative items from diverse materials such as metals,
wood, glass, ceramics, paper, and textiles. Over 475 color
photographs show bears on, as, and about everyday objects, and each
one is dated and identified with historical facts and a current
value range. Current bear enthusiasts will cherish this book and
skeptical readers will be converted. Beware of increasing bear
sightings!

In 1971, my family of four left the bustle of the city for the
suburbs of Long Island where we discovered the world of garage
sales and flea markets. Before long we were a part of the action,
creating "Happy Days," a 30-year family business entailing the
buying and selling of antique and collectible toys.
We never thought that our middle class suburban family would
traverse the United States and the globe encountering humorous and
surprising situations wherever we went. After all, who would
suspect that something as innocent as selling children's playthings
would lead to dealing with mobsters, actors, dreamers, schemers and
at least one murderer?!
