How do you make work easier? With machines, of course! Acclaimed
author Lola M. Schaefer and award-winning illustrator James Yang
explore various types of machines and their numerous, complex
functions. A fun and interactive STEM-themed picture book for fans
of David Macaulay and Byron Barton, and anyone curious about how
things work and what makes things go. Machines are everywhere. They
are the spoons that scoop and the trucks that dump. They are
pulleys and ramps and even a giant rocket ship flying through outer
space. How many simple and compound machines can you find? Lift,
Mix, Fling! introduces readers to the six different simple
machines: the screw, the lever, the wedge, the pulley, the inclined
plane, and the wheel and axle. Lola M. Schaefer's lively, rhyming
text and James Yang's bold and inventive illustrations make this
STEM topic easy to understand and fun to explore. Lift, Mix, Fling!
illustrates how machines function and why they are important-a
necessary building block in science. A fun and educational choice
for curious children, for classrooms, and for family story times.
Includes backmatter about simple and compound machines.
The life story of a daredevil who became a war hero will fascinate
adventurous young readers with its tales of survival. At age
thirteen, following the death of his father, young Eddie dropped
out of school and joined the workforce. Through a combination of
smarts, hard work, and perseverance, Rickenbacker would grow up to
become an automobile mechanic, a race car driver, a fighter pilot,
an entrepreneur, a war hero, a business executive, and a staunch
advocate for hard work and personal responsibility. Along the way
he lived on the line between recklessness and courage. He survived
dozens of accidents, coming close to death more than once. During
the earliest years of American automobile racing, Rickenbacker was
"the most daring and withal the most cautious driver" on the
circuit. How could he have been both daring and cautious? This book
invites young readers to decide for themselves as they follow
Rickenbacker on his many hair-raising adventures.

The Suez crisis was an invasion of Egypt in late 1956 followed by
France and the United Kingdom. The purpose was to remove the then
Egyptian President and take control of the Suez canal, which was
vital to western Europe for moving goods. Egypts had just
nationalised the canal. This was a humiliating defeat for the
invaders and resulted in petrol rationing in the U.K. This then led
to a slump in the sales of large cars and the market for German
bubble cars boomed. This led to Leonard Lord, the head of BMC and
the man who detested these foreign small cars to call for a British
small car. This was the birth of the mini. This car became a
favourite with the swinging sixties celebrity set and was featured
in the famous Michael Caine movie The Italian job, where Caine's
character, Charlie Croker, utters the famous line ` you're only
supposed to blow the bloody doors off' The material in this book
should be accessible to an year 8 student and as such should be
ideal reading material for the vast majority of students in schools
and F.E. colleges. This book is in a series on old technology and
is specifically designed to develop reading in teenage males. We
were asked by a Midlands College to provide something that
encouraged young males to read, since they were literally not
reading anything. Since many of them will be weak readers, the book
also comes with an audio recording on a disc. The student can then,
if they need to, listen to the audio as they read. This will be of
interest to schools, colleges and academies where there are
reluctant readers.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery was born in France in 1900, when
aeroplanes were just being invented. He always dreamt of flying,
and when he became a pilot as a young man, his adventures truly
began. He was one of the first pilots to deliver mail by plane and,
along with his fellow pilots, helped to create new routes to
faraway places. Antoine flew over mountains and deserts, battled
winds and storms, and even tried to break aviation records. He also
crashed a number of times. From his plane he reflected on life on
the earth and in the skies, and this inspired him to write about
his experiences. Peter Sis's remarkable biography celebrates the
author of The Little Prince, one of the world's most beloved books.
Expertly rendered illustrations of fast, flashy, and powerful sports cars, among them the 1962 Ford Thunderbird, 1964 Corvette Stingray, 1968 Chevy Impala SS427, 1969 Camaro Z-28, 1970 Ford Torino Fastback, 1971 Mustang Boss 351, 1974 Firebird Trans-Am, and 37 others. For coloring book enthusiasts and "muscle car" fans.

Have you ever wondered what made human beings think they could go to the Moon? The idea of exploring space started with fiction and science-fiction written by authors like Jules Verne and H G Wells. Little did they know that space travel would become a reality! It'll Never Work: Rockets and Space Travel explores the history of space travel and spaceships, the successes and failures that have led to the very recent Pluto flyby by the New Horizons spacecraft.
Each title in this exciting, high-interest series looks at a different area of technology and engineering and reveals the pioneering ideas and scientific thinking that enabled its development, as well as exposing those that proved to be a dead end. Each spread examines a particular example in depth, bringing in other similar ideas where relevant, and revealing that experimentation and failure often pave the way to technology success. Beautifully designed and illustrated with infographic-style artwork, this series is an excellent technology resource for readers aged 9 and up.
