The map will be great for: imagining; planning journeys; drawing on; using as a companion to the website; marking Slow Ways you plan to walk; recording routes you have walked; learning about active travel in schools; making walls look fantastic! It is a two-sided giant, colourful and functional map. Slow Ways is an initiative to create a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain's towns and cities as well as thousands of villages and every national park. People can use the routes to walk between neighbouring places or combine routes to travel over longer distances. Slow Ways was kick-started during the first lockdown with hundreds of volunteers suggesting thousands of routes. There are now over 8,000 routes in the network that cover over 120,000km. Using the Slow Ways website, people are now walking the routes to make sure they are good enough to be in the network. Enough work has now been done to publish our first printed map of the network at a scale that is perfect for imagining, planning and recording journeys.

Informed by on-the-ground research, Herb Lester's handy, folded guides uncover what makes a city special - its most distinctive shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, museums and galleries, whether unmissable old favourites, exciting new arrivals or overlooked treasures. Each entry comes with its own brief description, and a basic map helps the reader get their bearings and make plans. Reykjavik is unlike other cities. Its 120,000 inhabitants sustain a thriving art and music scene and several book and record shops, all in an area that can be strolled across in 30 minutes. The local s love of hot dogs is in keeping with other Nordic cities, but here they're all made from organic lamb. You can spot whales from its shores and they re on its menus too. And then there s the world beyond it, an extraordinary and varied landscape dotted with geysers, glaciers, waterfalls and black sand beaches. Our guide selects some of Reykjavik s highlights, it also offers tips for visitors wishing to explore beyond it, all while still having time to make it back to the city for a comfortable night s sleep."

The years between the end of the American Revolution and the beginning of the Civil War were crucial ones in the history of American coastal charting. At the beginning, foreign charts, principally British, were available; and a few of American origin. The latter were largely copies of British charts, and a few were compiled by local shipmasters and pilots. The more successful publishers were able to compile hydrographic data using their own resources, and added corrections in new editions of their charts. A "survey of the coast" was initiated by Congress in 1807 under Thomas Jefferson's administration. Delays due to the War of 1812 and political disagreements slowed progress and the production of the first important chart, that of New York harbour, was not published until 1843. Private publishers filled an important void between the time the Coast Survey was initiated and the time they produced usable charts. Data on the private publishers has been collected for publication here for the first time. Nevertheless, the survey was to increase the availability of charts which were accurate within the framework of hydrographic knowledge at the time. The Coast Survey succeeded in charting the entire coastline by the beginning of the Civil War. This volume is the first definitive study of these charts.
