Feline Clinical Parasitology (Hardcover, 1st ed): D. Bowman Feline Clinical Parasitology (Hardcover, 1st ed)
D. Bowman
R4,658 Discovery Miles 46 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although there are books available dealing with canine parasitology, there is at present no book detailing parasites that offers clinical information specific to felines. Cats differ significantly from dogs in their parasitic infections and infestations. Although dogs and cats do share a few parasites, the vast majority of the parasites of these pets are specific to either cats or dogs, not to both.

This must-have reference offers an in-depth examination of feline parasites. Topics covered include parasite identification, history, geographic distribution, pathogeneisis, epidemiology, zoonosis, diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention. Because of the immense worldwide popularity of cats and due to the amount of travel undertaken by cats and their owners, the authors have produced a book that is international in scope. Consequently, this exhaustive reference has strong appeal to practitioners and veterinary parasitologists in North America and around the world.

Animals, Disease and Human Society - Human-animal relations and the rise of veterinary medicine (Hardcover): Joanna Swabe Animals, Disease and Human Society - Human-animal relations and the rise of veterinary medicine (Hardcover)
Joanna Swabe
R4,563 Discovery Miles 45 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the history and nature of our dependency on other animals and the implications of this for human and animal health. Writing from an historical and sociological perspective, Joanna Swabe's work discusses such issues as:
* animal domestication
* the consequences of human exploitation of other animals, including links between human and animal disease
* the rise of a veterinary regime, designed to protect humans and animals alike
* implications of intensive farming practices, pet-keeping and recent biotechnological developments.
This account spans a period of some ten thousand years, and raises important questions about the increasing intensification of animal use for both animal and human health.

Constance McCorkle, Evelyn Mathias, Veen Schillhorn, W Tjaart
R979 Discovery Miles 9 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Livestock raisers and healers throughout the world have traditional ways of classifying and preventing or treating common animal diseases. Many of their "ethnoveterinary" practices offer viable alternatives to conventional Western-style veterinary medicine - especially where the latter is unavailable, unaffordable, unreliable, or inappropriate. This highly interdisciplinary and international volume provides a critico-analytic overview over the many facets and findings of ethnoveterinary research and development. From sociocultural, political-economic, and environmental as well as biomedical viewpoints, the book presents reviews and case studies of traditional veterinary knowledge and practice, along with historical perspectives, theoretical discussions and research methodologies. At a larger level, the anthology exemplifies the many potential benefits, for people everywhere, of systematically studying and building upon such rich bodies of "ethnoscience" as that embodied in local/traditional veterinary medicine.

Avian Influenza - Science, Policy and Politics (Hardcover, New): Ian Scoones Avian Influenza - Science, Policy and Politics (Hardcover, New)
Ian Scoones
R4,567 Discovery Miles 45 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past decade, substantial resources have been spent on tackling avian influenza and building a global capacity for a pandemic response. The catastrophic costs of the 1918 influenza pandemic are well documented, and the swine flu pandemic of 2009-10 has raised the alarm yet again. Across the world, surveillance systems have been upgraded, stockpiles of antiviral drugs and influenza vaccines have been created, veterinary and public health systems have been improved and poultry production and marketing has been dramatically restructured. What are the lessons from this experience? And what does this suggest for the future? This book explores how virus genetics, ecology and epidemiology intersect with economic, political and policy processes in a variety of places - from Bangkok to Washington, to Jakarta, Cairo, Rome and London. It focuses on the interaction of the international and national responses - and in particular the experiences of Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. It asks how effective is the disease surveillance and response system - can it respond to a new pandemic threat? The comparative analysis reveals the challenges and limitations of a technocratic, centralised response, and the need to take seriously local contexts. Drawing from these experiences, the book concludes with a discussion of future prospects and challenges, examining in particular what a 'One World, One Health' approach - where approaches to animal, human and ecosystem health are integrated - would look like in practice. Published in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

A MANUFACTURED PLAGUE (Book): Abigail Woods A MANUFACTURED PLAGUE (Book)
Abigail Woods
R1,950 Discovery Miles 19 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is currently regarded as one of the world's worst animal plagues. But how did this label become attached to a curable disease that poses little threat to human health? And why, in the epidemic of 2001, did the government's control strategy still rely upon Victorian trade restrictions and mass slaughter? This groundbreaking and well-researched book shows that, for over a century, FMD has brought fear, tragedy and sorrow- damaging businesses and affecting international relations. Yet these effects were neither inevitable nor caused by FMD itself but were, rather, the product of the legislation used to control it, and in this sense FMD is a 'manufactured' plague rather than a natural one. A Manufactured Plague turns the spotlight on this process of manufacture, revealing a rich history beset by controversy, in which party politics, class relations, veterinary ambitions, agricultural practices, the priorities of farming and the meat trade, fears for national security and scientific progress all made FMD what it is today.

Veterinary Ectoparasites - Biology, Pathology and Control 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): R. Wall Veterinary Ectoparasites - Biology, Pathology and Control 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
R. Wall
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Ectoparasites are of growing significance in modern veterinary medicine and a detailed understanding of the biology of these parasites is fundamental to their appropriate treatment and control. The authors of this book have therefore provided a complete overview of the biology, and behaviour of arthropod ectoparasites along with the pathology and treatment of diseases in livestock and companion animals of temperate habitats.

This is the only up-to-date book available written specifically for practitioners and students of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and applied animal sciences. Such a unique volume is essential because in veterinary parasitology, ectoparasites such as the lice, mites, ticks, fleas or dipteran agents of myiasis assume far greater prominence than in other parasitological disciplines. Ectoparasite infestation of domestic and companion animals, therefore, has overt clinical features requiring a distinct approach to diagnosis and control. This book has been written with this in mind. The text takes a unique integrated approach combining both ectoparasite biology and veterinary dermatology.

In the second edition of this successful book (previously, entitled "Veterinary Parasitology"), the detailed coverage of individual ectoparasite species has been expanded. Up-to-date information of new veterinary drugs and modes of application has been included and the practical clinical relevance of the information has been strengthened.
