Building Choral Excellence - Teaching Sight-Singing in the Choral Rehearsal (Hardcover): Steven M. Demorest Building Choral Excellence - Teaching Sight-Singing in the Choral Rehearsal (Hardcover)
Steven M. Demorest
R4,538 Discovery Miles 45 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designed for both the practicing choral director and the choral methods student, this is a compact and comprehensive overview of the many teaching methods, strategies, materials, and assessments available for choral sight-singing instruction. Sight-singing is an important, if sometimes neglected, facet of choral music education that often inspires fear and uncertainty in student and teacher alike. Written in an accessible style, this book takes the mystery out of teaching music reading. Topics covered include the history of sight-singing pedagogy and research, prominent methods and materials, and practical strategies for teaching and assessment. This is the only book to provide such a wealth of information under one cover and will become an essential part of every choral conductor's library.

Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion - Genesis, Transmission, and Meaning (Hardcover): Alfred Durr Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion - Genesis, Transmission, and Meaning (Hardcover)
Alfred Durr; Translated by Alfred Clayton
R6,451 Discovery Miles 64 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book (published in German by Bärenreiter in 1988 and now available in English translation for the first time) is a comprehensive guide to the genesis, transmission, structure, meaning, and performance considerations of Bach's St John Passion. One of Bach's most fascinating works, its text demonstrates a profound understanding of St John's Gospel. The musical design of the choruses with their numerous interrelationships is quite unique and demands some explanation. The fact that the Passion exists in four different versions leads Dürr to ask which changes were intentional and which were the result of practical constraints or of orders issued by church authorities.

A Conductor's Guide to the Choral-Orchestral Works of J. S. Bach (Hardcover): Jonathan D. Green A Conductor's Guide to the Choral-Orchestral Works of J. S. Bach (Hardcover)
Jonathan D. Green
R3,633 Discovery Miles 36 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the third volume in an on-going series of books surveying the choral-orchestral repertoire. In this study, Green reviews Bach's entire oeuvre, including the more than two hundred works that are rarely performed and therefore rarely discussed. All Bach's works from BWV1 to BWV249 are analyzed, making this volume one of the most useful handbooks on this repertoire. Green reviews each work in great detail, providing information such as an instrumentation list, performance times, publishers, availability of materials, manuscript location (when possible), the hand of the copyist(s), text sources, a discography, and bibliographies specific to each composition. Most importantly, for each work there is a detailed description of the performance issues within the score. This includes evaluations of each solo vocal role, an evaluation of the choral and orchestral parts, along with an estimation of their respective difficulties. There are a number of indexes that provide brief biographical or historical information about each text source indexed back to the works themselves. There is also an index of works by type, vocal solos, choral voicing, instrumentation, liturgical calendar, performance chronology, title, and chorale usage.

Varied Carols - A Survey of American Choral Literature (Hardcover): David P. DeVenney Varied Carols - A Survey of American Choral Literature (Hardcover)
David P. DeVenney
R2,554 Discovery Miles 25 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This survey of choral literature, written by American composers from 1760 through the 1990s, examines nearly 3,000 pieces of choral music written by over 300 composers. Along with a descriptive analysis, the literature is placed within a historical perspective. Familiar and less well-known composers and their music are examined. The study seeks to remedy the superficial treatment choral music is often given in standard textbooks on American music and to acknowledge and expose the varied richness of the literature.

Choral conductors and musicologists will appreciate the vast repertory of choral music literature examined. Organized chronologically, this study uniquely traces the development of choral music literature throughout the centuries. A select bibliography provides a useful guide for further research.

A Conductor's Guide to Choral-Orchestral Works, Twentieth Century - Part II: The Music of Rachmaninov through Penderecki... A Conductor's Guide to Choral-Orchestral Works, Twentieth Century - Part II: The Music of Rachmaninov through Penderecki (Hardcover, New)
Jonathan D. Green
R3,193 Discovery Miles 31 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This innovative survey of large choral-orchestral works is a continuation of the author's previous study of twentieth century works with English texts. Green examines nearly one hundred works, from Rachmaninov's Vesna to Penderecki's Song of Songs. For each work, he provides a biography of the composer, complete instrumentation, text sources, editions, availability of performing materials, performance issues, discography, and bibliography of the composer and the work. Based upon direct score study, each work has been evaluated in terms of potential performance problems, rehearsal issues, and level of difficulty for both the choir and orchestra. When present, solo roles are described. The composers represented in this work include Bela Bartok, Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Bloch, Maurice Durufe, Hans Werner Henze, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Leos Janacek, Gyorgy Ligeti, Gustav Mahler, Carl Orff, Krzysztof Penderecki, Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern, and Kurt Weill. Written as a field guide for conductors and others involved in programming concerts for choir and orchestra, this text will prove a useful source of new repertoire ideas and an invaluable aid to rehearsal preparation.

Choral Music by African-American Composers - A Selected, Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Revised): Evelyn Davidson White Choral Music by African-American Composers - A Selected, Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover, Revised)
Evelyn Davidson White
R3,159 Discovery Miles 31 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lists and describes approximately 1,600 published and unpublished choral works by more than 100 African-American composers and arrangers, 600 more works than the first edition. Many of these works, representing all styles from simple four-part settings to avant-garde pieces, have not been performed before because of the difficulty in locating them. White's bibliography provides a useful tool for busy conductors wishing to perform music by African-American composers, and serves as an incentive to choral conductors to program little-known composers as well as unknown works by established musicians. Arrangement is by composer. Entries list number of pages; voicing and solo requirements; vocal ranges; degree of difficulty; a cappella or type of accompaniment; publishers; and catalog number. Also included are a title index; a listing of selected collections of Negro spirituals; biographical sketches of African-American composers and arrangers; and three appendixes: selected source readings, selected discography, and addresses of publishers and composers.

Teaching and Performing Renaissance Choral Music - A Guide for Conductors and Performers (Paperback): Frances R. Poe Teaching and Performing Renaissance Choral Music - A Guide for Conductors and Performers (Paperback)
Frances R. Poe
R2,392 Discovery Miles 23 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At a time when critical thinking and problem solving are needed to make choral classes a bona fide curriculum offering, this workbook on teaching and performing Renaissance choral music is designed to give students in choral ensembles a representative sampling of Renaissance choral music and information about its style and structure, and to give choral conductors instructional materials that can help them teach students about the music as it is being rehearsed and prepared for performance. The use of this material will enable the conductor to explain more about the music itself in the time allotted for the choral class. The small choral ensemble, considered the best medium for performing Renaissance choral music, offers an ideal situtation for teaching musical style and structure through the mode of performance. The book includes a conductor's manual and a performer's programmed insturction workbook. The author suggests that students first experience the music by either singing the selections of listening to recordings, if they are available. The conductor should then refer to the study guides and opint our various aspects of the music that will enhance the students' knowledge of Renaissance style. Organized by genre, the workbook covers the French Chanson; the Italian Madrigal and Balletto; the English Madrigal and Ballett; the German Lied; the Renaissance Motet; the Mass; the English Anthem; and the Chorale Motet. Each genre contains musical examples, the history of the form, and performance practices. Bibliography.

O Sing Unto the Lord - A History of English Church Music (Hardcover): Andrew Gant O Sing Unto the Lord - A History of English Church Music (Hardcover)
Andrew Gant; Preface by Andrew Gant
R1,115 Discovery Miles 11 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For as long as people have worshipped together, music has played a key role in church life. With O Sing unto the Lord, Andrew Gant offers a fascinating history of English church music, from the Latin chant of late antiquity to the great proliferation of styles seen in contemporary repertoires. The ornate complexity of pre-Reformation Catholic liturgies revealed the exclusive nature of this form of worship. By contrast, simple English psalms, set to well-known folk songs, summed up the aims of the Reformation with its music for everyone. The Enlightenment brought hymns, the Methodists and Victorians a new delight in the beauty and emotion of worship. Today, church music mirrors our multifaceted worldview, embracing the sounds of pop and jazz along with the more traditional music of choir and organ. And reflecting its truly global reach, the influence of English church music can be found in everything from masses sung in Korean to American Sacred Harp singing. From medieval chorales to "Amazing Grace," West Gallery music to Christmas carols, English church music has broken through the boundaries of time, place, and denomination to remain familiar and cherished everywhere. Expansive and sure to appeal to all music lovers, O Sing unto the Lord is the biography of a tradition, a book about people, and a celebration of one of the most important sides to our cultural heritage.

The Embodiment of Authority - Perspectives on Performances (Hardcover, New edition): Taina Riikonen, Marjaana Virtanen The Embodiment of Authority - Perspectives on Performances (Hardcover, New edition)
Taina Riikonen, Marjaana Virtanen
R2,244 Discovery Miles 22 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Performance is a forum for social action, embodied interaction and shared authority. Recently, as the various acts and agencies surrounding a performance have become the target of scholarly interest, the complex split between theory and practice has been challenged, as has the idea of a singular, disembodied authorial ownership of the socio-material meanings surrounding performance. The Embodiment of Authority approaches performance, issues of authority and negotiated knowledge production through multi-material research data and interdisciplinary methods. The book discusses the relationship between authorial questions and performances via the following topics: shared authorities, ontologies of art work, diverse roles of rehearsals in the performance process, and embodied knowledge.

Sound Advice - Becoming A Better Children's Choir Conductor (Paperback): Jean Ashworth Bartle Sound Advice - Becoming A Better Children's Choir Conductor (Paperback)
Jean Ashworth Bartle
R1,358 Discovery Miles 13 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sound Advice is a valuable resource for college students, beginning teachers, and experienced conductors of children's choirs. It covers the vast array of skills needed by today's conductor and will benefit all choir directors who want their choirs to reach a higher level of artistry. This book will be useful on many levels: for the college student studying the child voice and elementary teaching methods; for the teacher beginning to direct choirs in schools, synagogues, churches and communities; for experienced children's choir directors who wish to know more about orchestral repertoire for treble voices, conducting an orchestra, and preparing a children's choir to sing a major work with a professional orchestra. The underlying educational philosophy is sound; the author sees development of musicianship through singing as the primary goal of a children's choir program. This philosophy differs dramatically from the traditional concept of the conductor as all-knowing and the singers as receptacles. An outstanding aspect of the book is how the author leads the reader to an understanding of how to teach musicianship. Developing literacy in the choral setting is a mysterious, amorphous process to many conductors, but the author clearly outlines this important process with practical suggestions, well-documented examples, and a clear reading style which will reach readers on many levels. The comprehensive repertoire, skill-building sheets, and programs for all types of children's choirs will provide teachers with immediate and highly valuable resources.

The Makers of the Sacred Harp (Paperback): David Warren Steel The Makers of the Sacred Harp (Paperback)
David Warren Steel; As told to Richard H Hulan
R683 Discovery Miles 6 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This authoritative reference work investigates the roots of the Sacred Harp, the central collection of the deeply influential and long-lived southern tradition of shape-note singing. Where other studies of the Sacred Harp have focused on the sociology of present-day singers and their activities, David Warren Steel and Richard H. Hulan concentrate on the regional culture that produced the Sacred Harp in the nineteenth century and delve deeply into history of its authors and composers. They trace the sources of every tune and text in the Sacred Harp, from the work of B. F. White, E. J. King, and their west Georgia contemporaries who helped compile the original collection in 1844 to the contributions by various composers to the 1936 to 1991 editions. The Makers of the Sacred Harp also includes analyses of the textual influences on the music--including metrical psalmody, English evangelical poets, American frontier preachers, camp meeting hymnody, and revival choruses--and essays placing the Sacred Harp as a product of the antebellum period with roots in religious revivalism. Drawing on census reports, local histories, family Bibles and other records, rich oral interviews with descendants, and Sacred Harp Publishing Company records, this volume reveals new details and insights about the history of this enduring American musical tradition.

Choral Masterworks - A Listener's Guide (Paperback): Michael Steinberg Choral Masterworks - A Listener's Guide (Paperback)
Michael Steinberg
R671 Discovery Miles 6 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Michael Steinberg's highly successful listener's guides--The Symphony and The Concerto--have been universally praised for their blend of captivating biography, crystal clear musical analysis, and delightful humor. Now Steinberg follows these two greatly admired volumes with Choral Masterworks, the only such guide available to this most popular of musical forms.
Here are more than fifty illuminating essays on the classic choral masterworks, ranging from Handel's Messiah, Bach's Mass in B Minor, and Beethoven's Missa solemnis, to works by Haydn, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and many others. Steinberg spans the entire history of classical music, from such giants of the Romantic era as Verdi and Berlioz, to leading modern composers such as Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Vaughan Williams, and Stravinsky, to contemporary masters such as John Adams and Charles Wuorinen. For each piece, Steinberg includes a fascinating biographical account of the work's genesis, often spiced with wonderful asides. The author includes an astute musical analysis of each piece, one that casual music lovers can easily appreciate and that more serious fans will find invaluable. The book also provides basic information such as the various movements of the work, the organization of the chorus and orchestra, and brief historical notes on early performances.
More than twenty million Americans perform regularly in choirs or choruses. Choral Masterworks will appeal not only to concert goers and CD collectors, but also to this vast multitude of choral performers, an especially engaged and active community.
"What sets Steinberg's writing apart is its appealing mixture of impregnable authority (he knows this music) and purelypersonal asides (by the end of the book, we know this man). Choral Masterworks can be read by anybody, from a professional musician to any young listener newly braced by the stoic pessimism of the Brahms 'German Requiem.'" --Washington Post Book World

Bach: The Mass in B Minor - The Great Catholic Mass (Paperback): George B. Stauffer Bach: The Mass in B Minor - The Great Catholic Mass (Paperback)
George B. Stauffer
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book George B. Stauffer explores the music and complex history of Bach's last and possibly greatest masterpiece. Stauffer examines the B-Minor Mass in greater detail than ever before, demonstrating for the first time Bach's reliance on contemporary models from the Dresden Mass repertory and his brilliantly innovative methods of unifying his immense composition. Musicians, music scholars, students, and music lovers will find in this engagingly written book a wealth of information about Bach's extraordinary choral work. Stauffer surveys the roots of the Mass Ordinary text and its treatment in settings known to Bach. He looks at the events that led to the writing of the B-Minor Mass and places the work within the context of the composer's late style. In three deeply informed chapters, Stauffer considers the individual sections of the Mass--the Kyrie and Gloria, the Credo, and the Sanctus and Agnus Dei. The book also traces the history of the work after Bach's death, addresses specific issues of performance practice, and investigates the qualities that give the B-Minor Mass its universal appeal.

The Show Choir Handbook (Paperback): Alan L., Alder, Thalia M. Mulvihill The Show Choir Handbook (Paperback)
Alan L., Alder, Thalia M. Mulvihill
R1,628 Discovery Miles 16 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the popularity of television shows such as Glee, American Idol, and The Voice, show choirs have become a vibrant component of college and high school music programs. Music teachers must not only know how to teach choral singing for popular music, but also be versed in show design and production. In The Show Choir Handbook, Alan L. Alder and Thalia M. Mulvihill address both song technique and show presentation, giving show choir directors the full set of tools they need for successful performances. The Show Choir Handbook is a resource for current and future music educators who administer show choirs. With most literature on the topic either out of date or focused on the teaching techniques limited to vocal jazz (drawing on the choral genre's origins as "swing choirs"), instructors are in dire need of a resource that addresses music produced by publishers and choral arrangers.

Mozart und seine Saenger - Am Beispiel der "Entfuehrung aus dem Serail" (German, Paperback, New edition): Christiane Schumann Mozart und seine Saenger - Am Beispiel der "Entfuehrung aus dem Serail" (German, Paperback, New edition)
Christiane Schumann
R3,353 Discovery Miles 33 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

English Choral Practice, 1400-1650 - Cambridge Studies in Performance Practice, 5 (Paperback, Revised): John Morehen English Choral Practice, 1400-1650 - Cambridge Studies in Performance Practice, 5 (Paperback, Revised)
John Morehen
R1,503 Discovery Miles 15 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first book to survey the performing practices in English choral music in the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the period of the English Reformation. The essays, all written by specialists in the field, consider in depth such areas as the growth and development of the 'church' choir, related issues of vocal tessitura, performing pitch, the systems of pronunciation appropriate for Latin- and English-texted music, and the day-to-day training of choristers. There is also an investigation of the local circumstances under which many of the important manuscripts of the period were compiled, which reveals an unsuspectedly close interrelationship between domestic music and music for the church. In addition, a study of surviving sources reveals that they give little more than a general guide as to their composers' and copyists' intentions.
