Frank R Spellman
R3,265 Discovery Miles 32 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Compact and practical, Spellman's Standard Handbook for Wastewater Operators: Volume III, Advanced Level, Second Edition rounds out the revision of this three-volume set. Together, these three volumes prepare operators to obtain licensure and operate wastewater treatment plants properly. This volume presents applied math and chemistry by way of real-world problems, covers equipment maintenance, and explains apparatus used in the laboratory and in the field. The third and final volume in the handbook features: Updated information on the latest technology Revised and restructured table of contents Updated problems, examples, and figures The three volumes are designed to build on each other, providing increasingly advanced information. For persons preparing for operator's licensing, this is critical, because wastewater treatment is a complex process. For licensed veteran operators, continuous review is also critical, because wastewater treatment is a dynamic, ever-changing field. Spellman's Standard Handbooks provide the vehicle for reaching these goals. Treating wastewater successfully demands technical expertise, experience, and a broad range of available technologies - an operator needs to be a generalist - as well as an appreciation and understanding of the fundamental environmental and health reasons for the process involved - an operator also needs to be a specialist. Filling its mission to enhance the understanding, awareness, and abilities of practicing and future operators, this volume provides the vehicle for the continuous learning and reviewing required by the evolving, dynamic, and complex process of water treatment.

Daniel J. Sherman
R3,416 R1,150 Discovery Miles 11 500 Save R2,266 (66%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1979, provoked by the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, governors of states hosting disposal facilities for low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) refused to accept additional shipments. The resulting shortage of disposal sites for wastes spurred Congress to devolve responsibility for establishing new, geographically diffuse LLRW disposal sites to states and regional compacts, with siting authorities often employing socio-economic and political data to target communities that would give little resistance to their plans. The communities, however, were far from compliant, organizing nearly 1000 opposition events that ended up blocking the implementation of any new disposal sites. Sherman provides comprehensive coverage of this opposition, testing hypotheses regarding movement mobilization and opposition strategy by analyzing the frequency and disruptive qualities of activism. In the process, he bridges applied policy questions about hazardous waste disposal with broader questions about the dynamics of social movements and the intergovernmental politics of policy implementation. The issues raised in this book are sure to be renewed as interest grows in nuclear power and the disposal of the resulting waste remains uncertain.

Containment of High-Level Radioactive and Hazardous Solid Wastes with Clay Barriers (Hardcover): Raymond N. Yong, Roland Pusch,... Containment of High-Level Radioactive and Hazardous Solid Wastes with Clay Barriers (Hardcover)
Raymond N. Yong, Roland Pusch, Masashi Nakano
R7,005 Discovery Miles 70 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One of the principal objections to or problems with the use of nuclear fuel is that a proven method for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel has yet to be established. The central focus of most schemes underway to dispose of these high-level radioactive wastes relies on clay-based buffers and barriers to isolate spent fuel canisters in boreholes deep underground in specially constructed tunnels and caverns.

Current thought on the principal methods of containment of high-level radioactive wastes is presented in this book. The authors proceed to discuss the processes and mechanisms involved in the development of long term properties and performance of clay-based buffers and backfills. The procedures and methodologies used to undertake predictions and performance assessments of these materials are also examined.

This is an invaluable reference for professionals, researchers, academics and regulators engaged in the development of radioactive waste sites.

Radioecology - Sources and Consequences of Ionising Radiation in the Environment (Hardcover): R.J. Pentreath Radioecology - Sources and Consequences of Ionising Radiation in the Environment (Hardcover)
R.J. Pentreath
R3,272 Discovery Miles 32 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Natural radiation arises from many sources, from the unstable atoms within our own bodies and in the materials around us, from the Sun, and even from beyond the Solar System. Additional sources include the legacy of testing nuclear weapons, nuclear waste, and nuclear accidents. All these sources have provided means of dating environmental materials and tracing the movements of substances through land, sea, and air. But ionising radiation also interacts with DNA, which has led to a remarkable range of studies to examine how and how quickly these unstable atoms are accumulated by both humans and biota, and their various effects on both. Providing an overview of the sources, uses and impacts of ionising radiation in the environment, and the frameworks developed to manage exposures to them, this is a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers interested in radioecology, environmental science and radiological protection.

The editors, in their introduction to each volume, provide a state-of-the-art overview of the topic and explain the influence and relevance of the collected papers on the development of policy. This reference series provides access to the economic literature that has shaped contemporary perspectives on land use analysis and policy.

New Environmental Policy Instruments in the European Union - Politics, Economics, and the Implementation of the Packaging Waste... New Environmental Policy Instruments in the European Union - Politics, Economics, and the Implementation of the Packaging Waste Directive (Hardcover, New Ed)
Ian Bailey
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The use of legislation by EU governments to define environmental standards for industry has been criticised for its poor track record in arresting the decline in the quality of Europe's environment. Environmental economists in particular have proposed that legislation should be supplemented or replaced by New Environmental Policy Instruments (NEPIs), such as eco-taxes, environmental charges, tradable permits and voluntary agreements. This book focuses on practical experiences with NEPIs in the EU and tests their application using the case study of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. It traces the ways in which member states have adapted NEPIs to suit their preferred styles of environmental policy, then assesses their performance and how NEPIs have both assisted and hindered the EU environmental programme. It suggests options for ensuring that the environmental programme does not become fragmented by the use of NEPIs and discusses the implications of EU enlargement.

Household Waste in Social Perspective - Values, Attitudes, Situation and Behaviour (Hardcover, New Ed): Stewart Barr Household Waste in Social Perspective - Values, Attitudes, Situation and Behaviour (Hardcover, New Ed)
Stewart Barr
R3,981 Discovery Miles 39 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The principal barrier to the introduction of more sustainable disposal methods has previously been thought to be the lack of both available knowledge and an awareness of the benefits and ease of these systems. Illustrated by an in-depth analysis of waste reduction, reuse and recycling behaviour in Exeter, Devon, this volume questions these assumptions. It not only provides a fresh examination of the previous (mainly US-focused) research into the underlying determinants of waste management behaviour from a geographical perspective, but also develops a new theoretical model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. Linking three broad categories: environmental values, situational characteristics and psychological factors, the book provides a timely evaluation of research on household waste management, develops an original analytical model and demonstrates the utility and importance of focusing on individual attitudes.

The Politics of Trash - How Governments Used Corruption to Clean Cities, 1890-1929 (Hardcover): Patricia Strach, Kathleen S... The Politics of Trash - How Governments Used Corruption to Clean Cities, 1890-1929 (Hardcover)
Patricia Strach, Kathleen S Sullivan
R998 Discovery Miles 9 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Politics of Trash explains how municipal trash collection solved odorous urban problems using nongovernmental and often unseemly means. Focusing on the persistent problems of filth and the frustration of generations of reformers unable to clean their cities, Patricia Strach and Kathleen S. Sullivan tell a story of dirty politics and administrative innovation that made rapidly expanding American cities livable. The solutions that professionals recommended to rid cities of overflowing waste cans, litter-filled privies, and animal carcasses were largely ignored by city governments. When the efforts of sanitarians, engineers, and reformers failed, public officials turned to the habits and tools of corruption as well as to gender and racial hierarchies. Corruption often provided the political will for public officials to establish garbage collection programs. Effective waste collection involves translating municipal imperatives into new habits and arrangements in homes and other private spaces. To change domestic habits, officials relied on gender hierarchy to make the women of the white, middle-class households in charge of sanitation. When public and private trash cans overflowed, racial and ethnic prejudices were harnessed to single out scavengers, garbage collectors, and neighborhoods by race. These early informal efforts were slowly incorporated into formal administrative processes that created the public-private sanitation systems that prevail in most American cities today. The Politics of Trash locates these hidden resources of governments to challenge presumptions about the formal mechanisms of governing and recovers the presence of residents at the margins, whose experiences can be as overlooked as garbage collection itself. This consideration of municipal garbage collection reveals how political development often relies on undemocratic means with long-term implications for further inequality. Focusing on the resources that cleaned American cities also shows the tenuous connection between political development and modernization. -- Cornell University Press

Urban Infrastructure in Transition - Networks, Buildings and Plans (Paperback): Timothy Moss Urban Infrastructure in Transition - Networks, Buildings and Plans (Paperback)
Timothy Moss; Edited by Simon Guy; Simon Marvin
R1,374 Discovery Miles 13 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Achieving sustainable energy and resource use is vital if cities are to thrive or even function in the long term. Focusing on cities in the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark, this book examines the mounting pressures for changes in the management style of utility services in Europe, pressures that stem from a wide range of sources such as liberalization and privatization of markets, tighter environmental standards, new economic incentives, competing technologies and changing consumption patterns. The authors show how changes in the management of utility services can contribute to achieving greater sustainability in urban regions. Whilst more efficient technology has a part to play, truly significant improvements in quality of life will be delivered only when the flow of material and energy through cities is focused on the goal of sustainability in each local context.
