Created in consultation with the President and Council of the Royal Watercolour Society, this neutral white, artist-quality paper is designed for use with water-based paints. It is made from a mixture of cotton and linen, and is sized with gelatin. Each sheet is deckle-edged, and bears the stamp and watermark of the RWS. Please note, this sheet is hot-pressed: it has an extremely smooth surface, ideal for detailed watercolour painting. At 425gsm, this is a slightly thicker and heavier sheet. Saunders Waterford is an exquisite watercolour paper, traditionally made on a cylinder mould machine. This is the superior quality watercolour paper made by St Cuthberts Mill and comes with the Royal Watercolour Society’s endorsement. Made using 100% cotton, the highest quality papermaking material, to high archival standards. Each sheet is buffered with calcium carbonate to help defend finished pieces of work from discolouration caused by acids present in atmospheric pollution.It's attractive surface is created using natural woollen felts that give it a distinctive random texture. The surface is sized in gelatine making it strong and resilient to scrubbing, and other rough treatments.
Fabriano 5 is an exceptionally smooth paper made by the Italian company Fabriano. This paper is both surface sized and watermarked, with the Fabriano logo. The Fabriano 5 paper is mould made from 50% cotton and 50% carefully selected raw material. The absence of acid to guarantees excellent permanence and resistance to ageing.
This superb artist grade paper from Saunders Waterford has a watermark in the corner for authenticity and 2 deckle edges which are visually beautiful and perfect for float framing. Please note that while Saunders Waterford High White papers are noticeably whiter than the traditional Saunders Waterford paper, they still have a pale cream appearance. This is because it is not currently possible to whiten the paper to a bright white without compromising light-fastness by using Optical Brightening Agents. The whiter shade of Saunders Waterford High White paper is achieved by adding a high white lightfast pigment with good long-life properties, as used in some watercolour paints. Artists grade watercolour paper is archival which means it will not discolour or fall apart over time and is made of 100% cotton rag. This paper is much more durable than lower grades of paper because it is gelatine surface sized and it is mould-made, both of which mean it can take scrubbing of the surface without falling apart. Fabriano Artistico watercolour paper is mould made and is produced with 100% cotton. It is chlorine and acid free, guaranteeing long conservation and inalterability over time. The paper is sized both internally and externally, making it ideally absorbent and retaining its nature unaltered even if scratched. This paper is traditional white, without optical bleaching.

Because watercolour paint is transparent the colour of the paper is a very important part of the painting. The colour of the ground will affect everything on top of it, both the painted and unpainted areas, even different shades of white. The artist can substantially alter the mood and atmosphere of the painting by using a coloured paper. Langton watercolour paper is acid free with an alkali reserve to preserve finished pieces of work and protect against discolouration. Treated with an anti-fungal treatment, Langton watercolour paper also boasts a gelatinised surface for strength and resilience. Please note, these sheets have a 'Not' finish (cold-pressed). They have a slightly textured surface, and are not recommended for painting in an extremely detailed manner, though they should be suitable for most purposes.

Sizing is important to watercolor paper. It helps the paper accept washes, scratching and erasing without affecting the actual fibers and strength of the paper. Manufactured in the same French mill since 1492, Arches watercolour papers are produced on a cylinder mould with pure French stream water. Made with natural gelatin sizing.
