Coen Brothers updating of the classic 1969 western starring Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal 'Rooster' Cogburn, originally played by John Wayne. After her father is murdered, 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) sets out to capture the killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), with the help of two lawmen - the ageing, alcoholic marshall Rooster Cogburn (Bridges), and Texas Ranger La Boeuf (Matt Damon). Determined to accompany them on their quest, Mattie wonders whether Cogburn, with his loose morals, has the required 'true grit' for the job. When Chaney's trail heads into Indian territory, Mattie, stubborn to the last, insists on joining the pair in their search, which soon finds them in a raft of dangerous adventures that will test them to the core.

Western following a group of travellers whose wagon breaks down in Comanche territory. Concealed in the travellers' wagon are Kentucky rifles, made for settlers to defend themselves against the natives. Aware these weapons are in the group's possession, the Comanche tribe deliver an ultimatum - if they do not hand over the rifles, they will not be allowed to pass safely through the Indians' land.

After corporate mining boss Coy LaHood begins a campaign of terror to drive independent pan miners out of the area, a stranger called Preacher rides into the underdogs' camp. He becomes their avenger.

The tycoon then hires a badge-wearing killer and his duster-shrouded deputies, men loyal to whomever pays the most.

Though he initially wants nothing to do with these people, Walt eventually gives in and puts the boy to work fixing up the neighborhood, setting into motion an unlikely friendship that will change both their lives.
