With its history of nearly a thousand years, shoji - translucent paper-backed sliding doors and screens - are an inherent part of Japanese tradition and culture. But their beauty and charm can equally be adapted to rooms in a Western home. In this book, Des King examines basic shoji making and design. He gives comprehensive background information about shoji and how they have evolved, and detailed step-by-step instructions, supported by many diagrams and photographs, on how to make three shoji with progressively more complex kumiko arrangements, and variations on structure and joinery. Kumiko patterns enhance the uniqueness and charm of shoji, and Des King introduces three different kinds of patterns, and provides detailed instructions on how to make each kind, including dimensional diagrams of jigs that will improve work efficiency. He also dispels many of the myths about the Japanese hand-plane - the kanna - with an extensive description of how to set up, use and maintain this exceptional tool, including problems that can arise and how to avoid them. Through his highly structured and traditional approach in Book 1, Des King lays solid foundations from which any woodworker can confidently look toward tackling much more complex kumiko patterns and arrangements that can enhance the flair and individuality of shoji in any setting.
"This Old House "meets "Wayne's World "in this zany guide to designing and building tiny homes"" Derek Diedricksen has always had a love for small, modest houses ever since his father gave him the book "Tiny Tiny Houses" by Lester Walker for his tenth birthday. Combining his artistic abilities, wild imagination, and his passion for small houses, he self-published "Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts, and Whatever the Heck Else we could Squeeze in Here" in 2009. This book is a collection of Diedricksen's creative/imaginative sketches for building small houses, shacks, cottages, and forts. The sketches are accompanied with hand-written commentary, both instructive and comical. Derek's main purpose is to get your creative juices flowing and encourage you to get off the couch and use your hands. Believing that specific building plans squash creativity, he avoids too many detailed instructions, giving you the chance to put your own creative spin on your very own small abode (even if it is just in your imagination).

The book aims to enlighten and entertain even as it strives to instill virtue and industry in its young readers. It's a very handsome volume, with nearly 200 illustrations, a pleasing typeface and a charming authorial tone. The projects are a pretty varied lot, ranging from the simple to the very ambitious. While there is some basic instruction on how to do things, the author expects some familiarity with tools. It is however a great font of ideas and a starting point for lots of projects that you might not ordinarily attempt. We found the book a lot of fun. Incidentally the cover, which is a faithful restoration of the original is one of the cooler woodworking book covers ever. As a bonus, the detailed booklist from Cassell, Petter & Galpin, the original publishers, provides a fascinating window into the era's recommended books for wholesome and hardworking families.
