When Christopher Bayliss abandons Rome, he returns to England determin ed to be cleansed forever of the contagion of religion. He says that he is more than happy to leave behind his angels along with his demons . But his research into an obscure 18th century poet, Richard Pelham, reintroduces into his life those same ghostly whispers and rumours he thought he'd silenced for good. And so he flees once more, into a dif ferent type of life entirely - he escapes into worldly success. But he cannot escape Richard Pelham's demons. Soon they take over his life. Then finds himself cloistered again, this time in the Richmond booksh op of Stamford Tewk, whose archive is said to contain crucial unpublis hed material regarding the life and work of Pelham. Tewk himself is a legend in the world of writing and scholarship. Age has in no way dim inished the astringency of his intellect or the savagery of his tongue . Christopher comes to see that what Tewk is offering to sell him wil l be costly, but only gradually does he understand quite how great a p rice he is being asked to pay.
