Chinese painter Haiying Xu (born 1975) frequently depicts herself
in spectral, isolate situations, such as bare rooms or dark,
ankle-deep water, surrounded by a cavalry of spirit creatures and
dragon forms. Collectively, her self-portraits and dream tableaux
allegorize a China of irretrievable pasts and unknowable futures.
This volume reproduces a large selection of her works, alongside
installation shots.
