Carl Vine's Piano Sonatas are a crucial contribution to the piano
repertoire. Each one carries the essence of pianistic traditions
through Vine's own stylistic voice. The latest in the series, his
Piano Sonata No.4 is comprised of three seamless movements of high
character. Aphorisms opens the sonata with strings of fast lines
and arpeggios articulating a set of materials that don't seem to
interact as much as coexist. This leads straight into the pensive
second movement, Reflection, and finally Fury which closes the
sonata with relentless and violent energy. The premiere was given
in November 2019 at Carnegie Hall by the pianist who commissioned
the sonata, Lindsay Garritson, and has subsequently been recorded
by her.
