The McLane Tilton papers were received by the Marine Corps Museum
in 1967 and are particularly useful in documenting the life of a
Marine officer at sea during the latter half of the nineteenth
century. The Tilton collection is especially useful in that it
records not only military events as experienced by the author, but
describes at length his impression of indigenous society on both
the Asiatic and the Mediterranean stations.
