Daniel Chavarria's award-winning novel is set in post-Cold War
Cuba, where, with a 'combination of bicycle, butt, guitar, and open
mind', and quite a lot of skulduggery, attractive Alicia has
created the perfect scheme to part her foreign clients from their
money. But where is the really wealthy client who will provide her
very own Swiss bank account? Could it be Mel Gibson lookalike
businessman Victor King, who is trying to interest the Cubans in
his plans for underwater archaeological tourism? Inevitably, Victor
is not what he seems either, but he has suggestions for a way to
make use of Alicia's particular talents that may give her the money
and independence she craves. All seems to be going splendidly
before there is an unexpected twist, an olive plays a pivotal role
and their money-making scam needs a re-think. In an uneasy
alliance, Victor and Alicia come up with a cunning plan, detailed
and devious, in which disguises, a freezer and Dutch cuisine play
an important part before the ultimate doublecross. In the end none
of the plotters gets quite what they wanted, but they wind up quite
liking what they get. The humour is wry and sometimes grotesque;
the sexual fun and games are explicit and erotic. While the
interplay between the characters has centre stage, Chavarria (a
Uruguayan from whom we will hear more) also gives us a flavour of
the Cuban background. The grim realities of daily life for ordinary
Cubans and the needs that drive people to extremes are subtly
depicted, and yet the country still holds an exotic, romantic aura
for those who are not trying to exploit it or get away from it.

The beautiful Allcia hatches a plot to ensnare the wealthy foreign
visitors to Castro's Cuba through an elaborate scam involving a
broken bicycle and her voluptuous charms. Taking choreographed
spills in front of expensive foreign cars, Allcia squeezes the
maximum sympathy and cash out of her clueless, sexually aroused,
victims. Add to this mix the guile of her mother who is in on the
scam, and the sky's the limit for Allcia. However, when she
attempts to trap Victor, a convicted bank robber masquerading as a
Canadian businessman, they quickly realise each other's nefarious
motives and embark on a misadventure of sex, cross-dressing,
kidnapping and death by olive. Adios Muchachos is an erotic,
brutally funny romp through the underworld of post-revolutionary
Cuba.
