This charming book was first published by Kegan Paul in 1906 at the
height of Japonisme, the passion for all things Japanese in Europe
and America. Decorated by Ada Galton with motifs based on the work
of Hokusai, Kuniyoshi and Korin, and others, it can be seen both as
an artefact of the period and movement, and as a romantic account
of the gods and heroes of traditional Japan, and to the legends and
stories that are at the very heart of Japanese art and culture. As
the heroes of the ancient Greeks were the expression of their
ideals, so the Japanese rank their heroes almost among the gods.
